To think this was disgusting behaviour

Driving down a residential road, 2 lads about 16/17 stroll out in front of me, headphones in, clearly not paying attention to the road. I obviously slow right down and beep loudly to alert them, they barely respond or look up but I see them smirk at each other. Next thing, I hear an incredibly loud shout of, "fuck off!!", look briefly to my left to see a teenage girl of about the same age gesturing at me and shouting profanities. I mean, was that hugely necessary? Absolutely disgusting behaviour. I have a 17 year old daughter and if she behaved that way I'd disown her! What is wrong with some young people today?!

I do love the fact that you'd be fucking mortified by your daughter swearing. 😁

Quite

Oh I'm not even engaging with you anymore, honestly. "Out of control" for beeping at someone who almost got themselves run over? Whilst completely ignoring the actual out of control aggressive behaviour I was in the receiving end of? Right-o. 🥴

You have a nice day.

Discusting

Ohhh how people love to take things wildly out of context in the interests of being totes hilarious on an internet forum 🤣

In cast it was blindingly obvious (and I fail to believe it wasn't): I'd be mortified at my daughter swearing loudly in public aggressively at a driver in the street whilst waving the V sign. Which is very clearly, evidently, NOT the same as venting anonymously on an online forum. HTH.

Crikey reading the replies on here really explains why there are so many rude and entitled young people!

Oh yes! Thankfully they're not my kids, that's for sure. 😅

Maybe she thought you were a lecherous older woman beeping at boys in school uniform.

😂 I'd say the likelihood of her reaching this conclusion was slim to not at all.

That is exactly what a horn is for - to alert others of your presence especially if you want to avoid a hazardous situation

Were you in danger of hitting them if you had not beeped your horn? If not, you should not have used it.

I was in danger of hitting them had I not slowed right down to accommodate them strolling out in front of my car without so much as a glance in my direction.

When one strolls out in front of one's car without looking, wearing headphones, and appearing totally oblivious to the fact that they are indeed on a road where moving cars are approaching them, one expects to be beeped at.

I'm delighted to read that so many people here think aimlessly wandering into the middle of the road with no warning to or by vehicles approaching is OK. Might start doing it myself. What could possibly go wrong? 😂

Same 😂

I think that what you need to do is write a jolly good letter to the editor. And possibly ask the vicar to address such ungodly behaviour in Sunday's sermon.

What?🥴

In the "trying to hit on me" scenario, surely we should be educating young women to just ignore it. These creepy men like to get the reaction. It's part of their stupid, idotic, sexist fun. Ignoring them is the best response, IMO. When they go low, etc etc..

Sounds good but it's very difficult.
When I'm catcalled, shouted at, called something rude, called something sexist etc, the knee-jerk reaction is to shout back and try to get the better of him.

TeabySea · 02/10/2024 16:54

rudeteenager · 02/10/2024 13:19

@TeabySea
The young girl in question was facing the road, could see me ( a female) driving the car, saw the situation unfold, saw why I was beeping at her mates, and still chose to shout at me to fuck off, whilst looking at me and gesturing.

You're telling me genuinely you think it's possible she mistook for a pervy cat calling bloke in a transit van? Not buying it, sorry.

I was talking about a specific scenario as I described.
If you were visible as female and not a threat per se, I'd say she overreacted but I couldn't get overly worked up about it.
So yes, she was rude, in context.
I wouldn't consider it "disgusting", just rude.

I get it, but by doing that you are telling them you've let them get under your skin. They've won. Don't even give them the satisfaction of an eyeroll.

Auburngal · 02/10/2024 17:05

At the supermarket I worked, got teens who came in, running about, swearing at colleagues and customers, threw things like eggs and other breakables - laughing afterwards.

Think two of the families where the teens came from (some were brothers) have been evicted for their behaviour as well as their parent(s). As the group did similar antics in other shops in the area, not just mine.

You do realise OP, that pedestrians have priority and you are not allowed to beep them in anger, which you clearly did as you were able to slow down to avoid hitting them.

Doesn’t matter if they choose to step out. They do have priority over you in your car. You need to read the updated version of the Highway Code.

I had similar in Ashton last year. The lights turned to green and I started to pull away and a young woman walked out put her hands on my bonnett and said ' just wait a fuckin minute bitch" I wound the window down and just ' how about no'. I was out of gear but reved the engine. She nearly shit herself thinking I was going to run her over ( of course I wasnt) and ran off giving me the middle finger.
I drove away thinking what was all that about.
It wasn't a crossing. The lights were already on green when she ran out.
I just put it down to her being a div.

How did you start to pull away if you were out of gear? Clearly you revved your engine whilst in gear. She walked AND she ran out at the same time? 😂

pinkstripeycat · 02/10/2024 17:14

rudeteenager · 02/10/2024 13:06

That's literally what the car horn is for 😂
To alert others to your presence, especially if they might be creating an unsafe situation, as these lads were. They had headphones in as far as I could see (the one nearest me certainly did), and appeared totally oblivious as they strolled casually in front of me. Beeping was absolutely the appropriate response. If you think that deserves to be matched with aggressive swearing then I don't think it's me who's the problem tbh 😂

You didn’t need to alert them to your presence thought did you OP? You had already slowed down. Beeping was not appropriate at all.

rudeteenager · 02/10/2024 17:15

Ok, so I can just walk out in front of cars willy nilly, and if they hit me it's their fault because I have priority? And if they dare to beep at me for doing so, they're angry and they should pipe down and let me get on with meandering aimlessly all over the road with no warning, and without even looking first?

Gotcha. I'll just pop off and do that now, then.

🤣

Yes, I did, for the umpteenth time, beep to alert them of my presence. As I've said repeatedly now - they did not so much as look in my direction, appearing totally oblivious to the fact a car was driving towards them, and they had headphones in. All of those things taken together indicated to me that they were not aware of my presence, despite the slowing down. Hence I wished to alert them.

You very unnecessarily beeped at them very loudly.

Every action...

Are you really surprised?

If they could have reasonably stopped in time (ie did an emergency stop) and failed to so of course it would be their fault. This is regardless of who has right of way.

OK I'll explain again with more detail.
Lights are on red. I'm stopped.
Lights turn to green. I want to turn right at this junction. I start to pull forward put can't turn right due to oncoming traffic. As I've moved ( because Lights are on green and I'm not going fast) divvy woman who looked like she was either pissed up or off her tits on coke comes from the corner on the left and places her hands om my bonnet and starts calling me a fucking bitch, slag ,whore etc. I deadpan her with face and saying that i shold get back to my own end. I just said how about no. My Handbrake is on, car out of gear and I rev. She gives me the finger. I go into gear do my turn and get on with my day.
So yeah, she walked out on me as I was at the lights and immediately placed her hand on my bonnet and ok maybe not ran away but certainly stumbled faster than walking pace.
The whole interaction was probably less than 40 seconds because I managed to do the right turn before the light change.

Anything else you want to pick holes with? I nearly did a diagram but couldn't be arsed. .
