Dog came to our house viewing

Our estate agent brought a potential buyer round to view our house today who turned up with their dog. I saw them on the front door ring camera carry it in to our house but when I checked the back garden camera I could see it walking on our carpet!

We have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and it walked all over where the boys play (luckily most of their things were put away for the visit) and the estate agent knows this.

The dog also was carried into their bedroom and held above our baby’s cot.

if this hadn’t annoyed me enough when asked about it the estate agent lied and said the dog was carried the whole time. When I told her we can see it on the ring she said she’d make a note that no pets would be allowed on future viewings and that’s it ok as the dog didn’t go to the toilet in our garden.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but just wanted to gauge opinions before I speak to the agent properly tomorrow and whether that’s normal behaviour or is as bizarre as I think it is.

I love dogs. I wouldn't want a random dog in my house.

Oh do stfu @LuckySantangelo35. You are just trying to cause trouble.

I voted YANBU. Whilst I don't infantilise my dog, I do show it the same level of respect, love and care that I do for any human I'm related to or friends with. Does that make me a bad person for treating a non human animal with compassion and kindness?

Dogs aren't a commodity you ignorant fool.

@ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver

i don’t care what you say dogs do NOT need to come every single place that humans do, end of (the exception to that being service dogs).

oh and of course I believe dogs deserve respect, that doesn’t mean carting them about to places against others wishes.

KnottedTwine · 03/10/2024 08:08

Allergies are a red herring.

The basic is that it is entirely inappropriate to take an animal into someone else's house without being invited to do so.

It doesn't matter how well trained it is, whether you are canvassing your animal's opinion on whether they'd like to live there, whether you are carrying it, whether the visit is quick or slow, whether the animal will whine when it is left.

It does not surprise me however that there are many dog-obsessed people on here who can't see that.

niffynickers · 03/10/2024 09:27

I wouldn't have let them in with the dog. It could have stayed in the ea car!

I don’t see what the price point has to do with it. Sellers of cheap properties are just as keen to sell as sellers of expensive ones.

It’s a very different market, esp at the moment with the uncertainty of a mansion tax (by the new govn).

to be clear - I do ask, and properties I have been looking at are empty, no risk re. allergies or people’s things!!!!

Musicofthespiers · 03/10/2024 11:15

Blimey. Not acceptable at all.

Someone brought their dog to our wedding without mentioning it. I was pretty shocked when I got to our Reception and there was a dog!

WTAF??? Seriously the entitlement is off the scale.

BigAnne · 03/10/2024 11:41

@Tangledteatowel why did you take your dog to house viewings when you could have left it elsewhere?

Absolutely agree. Dogs are not small humans who can’t be left alone for 5 minutes. Yes they should be treated kindly and well looked after but also needs to be remembered they’re animals and don’t belong in every single human space.

MellersSmellers · 03/10/2024 16:57

Well I'm amazed the viewer was so inconsiderate as to think it was OK to take her dog into someone else's home without permission! I'd be cross too, and I don't have allergies.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 03/10/2024 17:03

If someone had brought a dog to my wedding I would have kept it as a gift.

Abitofalark · 03/10/2024 17:09

Are you saying you weren't there during the visit but viewed it later on a recording? In any case, it is completely unacceptable with a bit of a cheek from the estate agent thrown in.

Some people seem to have no sense of the decorum that one used to be able to take for granted in dealing with professional people.

Makingchocolatecake · 03/10/2024 21:45

It's weird but wouldn't bother me even with young children.

AmIEnough · 06/10/2024 09:21

I’m a dog lover but this is absolutely NOT ok! What if you or your DC were hugely allergic! I’d be having serious words with whoever manages the estate agency.

It's the EA lying that's the sackable problem.

sharpclawedkitten · 06/10/2024 12:10

Hmm I think that's an unfair insult. A lot of dog owners absolutely think their dog is a status symbol and fashion accessory.

Even more so if it's a rescue - "we have a rescue dog you know".

You definitely do NOT take dogs to a house viewing. However I was reading an article in the Times today and it said if you are moving to a new area, take your dog for a walk there, as you will get talking to other dog owners and they will tell you lots of things about the area.

Moellen54 · 06/10/2024 13:10

Honestly not acceptable. And the estate agent would be sacked and Id find another.

Navyontop · 06/10/2024 13:16

You are not being unreasonable. Get a new estate agent, above all else you can’t trust them as they lied to you.
Tell them exactly why you are leaving.
And FYI, I’m a dog lover.

barbiegirl881 · 06/10/2024 13:20

Totally unacceptable. On the flip side I went to view a house recently and the estate agent had his dog with him! Absolutely bizarre on both counts.

TicklishMintDuck · 06/10/2024 13:22

I love dogs but this is not ok! Leave the dog at home for the house viewing!

Pherian · 06/10/2024 13:31

This isn’t normal. However, I’d leave it. Just set the expectation that no pets are to come into the house. I’d also ask people not to wear shoes through the house. Some people are nasty stepping in anything and everything.

EmilyA187 · 06/10/2024 13:33

I’d be absolutely furious. I don’t allow my own mother’s dog in my home let alone someone else’s. The fact the EA lied about it too thinking they could get away with it I’d definitely pull them up about it more seriously.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 06/10/2024 13:36

I’m an agent. Wholly unacceptable. Any pet that comes on a viewing should be left in the vehicle or tied up outside. Would never have allowed this!

Same as shoes off is standard proceedure. It’s a matter of respect for the people who currently reside in the home.

RachTheAlpaca · 06/10/2024 13:41

I'm fuming for you!
Estate agent should be paying for you to have your carpets cleaned!

Cheek of the person that brings their dog around!

Strictlymad · 06/10/2024 13:42

I would be billing them for a carpet clean and moving agents. Absolutely disgraceful, my eldest has a severe dog allergy and would be really unwell if one had been in the house
