I know if it was the milkman or the postman everyone would be saying I'm a miserable cow but when the council state on all their literature and their website that all bins are to be out for collection by 7am and then bloody well turn up at 6.30am.... is that fair???
When I rang the council they told me someone would be back to collect it within two days, so I demanded that someone come back for it today because it wasn't my fault that I missed the collection!
SO
am I being unreasonable?

YANBU
BUT
can you imagine how many bins have to be collected
someone just wanted to get ahead on his workload and left early
whay didn't you put it out last night like normal people

CountessDracula · 22/04/2008 09:55

I would put it out the night before

CountessDracula · 22/04/2008 09:55

You could ask nicely rather than demand!

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 22/04/2008 09:56

CD change your name to cubeofpoo
I love that story

TheFallenMadonna · 22/04/2008 09:57

I put it out the night before too. But we are also told not to do that

Bit noisy for 6.30 I think.

peanutbear · 22/04/2008 10:00

Your all being very fair about this not like me at all in a previous house the dustbin men were dreadful they forgot to empty bins, they came at whatever time suited them even when it was still just black sacks so if you put it out the night before it got ripped open

they swore continually even at the children if they were out playing (because they used to stop and watch the bin men and the men didnt like it!!!)

Wh cant a job we pay for just be done properly and why cant we demand better service

If your tescos shopping came half an hour early and you missed it you would want to demand they came back the same day

sorry rant about council services

Beelliesebub · 22/04/2008 10:14

It might sound like it's a bit precocious BUT I did demand in a nice way and besides, when you take into account all this malarkey that's being introduced concerning refuse and we all have to stick to their rules, why the hell shouldn't they stick to their rules?

Did you know that technically if you put your bin out the night before you can actually get fined for flytipping...

'Tis true....dh works for refuse department for neighbouring council!

Anyway, they've just rung me back and told me that they are indeed coming back today, so they know they're in the wrong.

YANBU. We cannot leave our bins out the night before because local yobs turn them over. Agree 6.30 is too early. Other problems we have are recycling boxes being chucked everywhere after being emptied (2 disappeared already) or being left on the middle of the drive so we have to leave the car on the middle of the road to move it before we can get onto the drive. In the past at Christmas/New year erratic collections so that we have had a collection before Christmas and no more till after New Year and they wont take "side rubbish" even at this time. Also they dont publicise very well exactly when collections are due to be made around bank holidays (usual day Monday) so most of us arent sure and usually miss our collection. They also charge for additional collections - hence loads of fly tipping (fridges etc) at our local "beauty spot". Where I lived before (different council) you could have three free collections per year which was great - much less junk dumped by the roadside etc.

Beelliesebub · 22/04/2008 10:41

I'm with you peanutbear and bluefox.
Because the all the council's outsource and put different parts of their services out to tender to get value for money, they end up with some right cowboys and the trouble is they have absolutely no accountability.
This particular outfit recently killed someone whilst reversing, so all the local councils refuse workers had to have banksman training. This means that under no circumstances are any council vehicles allowed to reverse without someone walking at the back and guiding the vehicle. What was this tosser doing this morning.... yup! Reversing down my road, at speed, at 6.30! And the reason I know was because dh was walking down our drive to put the fraccing bin out.....

OP posts:
peanutbear · 22/04/2008 10:44

they killed someone

I know a lot of cars have been damaged in the street we used to live on because off street parking was so bad there were angry people shouting every day who had lost wing mirrors and wheel arches but to actually reverse into a person!!!

DiscoDizzy · 22/04/2008 10:46

We always put it out the night before, its been known to be 6 ish where we live.

Beelliesebub - just been reading an old thread and I see we live in the same area, i'm just outside w'ton.

Beelliesebub · 22/04/2008 10:55

I'm all excited now DD...... cos you live where I live.... nearly! Apart from the binmen, it's a fantastic place to live, the best of both worlds. Sea and beaches and mountains for a backdrop....

I must admit Peanutbear, the driver actually got sent to prison (which I did think was a bit OTT because at the end of the day it was an accident) but you'd think it'd make them want to follow the rules about reversing...

I only moved over here bout 5 yrs ago, prior to that lived in Eden Valley all my life. DH from her y'see. TBH i never thought i'd be happy over here but I was proved wrong, finally settling in with a little social circle, DD's happy at school. Rather happy. The only thing I find annoying is that I now have to drive 40 mins to get onto the M6 whereas before I was sitting right on top of it!

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 22/04/2008 11:09

YANBU

if they are going to be there by 6.30am, they need to tell you to have them out for 6 or put them out the night before.

twunts.

mustsleep · 22/04/2008 11:19

ours do this with the green bins every week

which is a pita when i get up at seven and find that dh has forgotton to put them out and they have already been

yanbu, but tbh i prob wouldn;t have been arsed phoning them up

GordonRamsay · 22/04/2008 11:32

I wouldn't if I was you.
I've just heard on the radio about a guy who was fined £200 for slightly over-filling his wheelie-bin. I reckon complaining about something could get you 5 years...!!

Beelliesebub · 22/04/2008 11:49

Precisely, Squonk!

I had to ring them mustsleep. We only get a small rubbish bin and it was full. Not full to overflowing and bags sticking out the top, just full with the lid shut, so it had to be emptied otherwise I could've been fined £200, couldn't I Gordon ..... Besides, that's what I pay my really bloody expensive, just gone up again council tax for.... and not forgetting I'm a miserable cow when I don't get what I've paid for!
In the past they used to wear masks and call themselves Dick Turpin before they robbed you, now they just call themselves the government....

DD... all my family come from Carlisle but I was actually born and brought up in London. We moved here nearly four years ago but to be fair, I did spend 6 months up this way with my nan when I was younger, so I knew I'd love it when I moved up here.

OP posts:
mustsleep · 22/04/2008 12:03

do you really get fined if your bin is overflowing??

i have phoned them on a couple of occasions when they have just not been at all and my bin has been full!! also mentioned the fact that i have seen rats around here but that had no sway and she was just like just phone again if they miss next week

shelleylou · 22/04/2008 12:06

The majority of councils refuse collections start as 7am and if the bin isnt out they dont have to return to collect it. So your lucky that they came earlier than they are surposed to so it can still be emtied this week. I know it varies on the person you speak to and the area.

Ledodgy · 22/04/2008 12:09

I was listening to LBC this morning and a man has been fined in Cumbria for having his bin open by 7 inches!

link here sorry it's the Mail!

cadelaide · 22/04/2008 12:22

Hello Gordon!

Shouldn't you be in the kitchen shouting at people, it is lunchtime you know.

cadelaide · 22/04/2008 12:23

oops.

forgot to punctuate.

....?....
