To think that cat food manufacturers are evil dog owners?

Because it’s absolutely impossible to open sachets of the disgusting, smelly, liquid filled, gravy ones that the furry overlords demand without ripping them part way, splashing it up the wall, getting it on your top, in your eye and on the floor rather than the bowl you’ve got on the counter?

And you can't recycle the bastards without washing them out and taking them to one supermarket in a town your mother in law lives in 6 miles away?

And no cat in the history of cat domination of the human species has ever eaten the beef flavour.

Won’t someone think of the Cat Slaves?

My husband got frustrated with our cat refusing to eat any of the sachets so he tasted every flavour. He said they were all disgusting and hard to tell apart ubless they were fishy. The texture was awful too. The biscuits are a lot better, apparently.

We ended up feeding the cat proper cooked meat for one meal and dried food for his breakfast.

Zero waste and a happy cat.

On bit of advice I have been given is to sure the food isn't served straight out of the fidge. Cats associate very cold food with something that has been dead a long time, so they won't eat it.

Cats need some green matter. In the wild they get it from the stomach contents of their prey.

Well that may be but my cats leave anything like that well alone. If they fancy something green they eat grass.

WellOwlBeDamned · 30/09/2024 10:28

My cats prefer food in gravy but gravy tins of various brands were pulled sometime earlier this year

only the cheapest brands tho 🤔

I toyed with getting them the still largely available dog food in gravy (sacrilege I know) but cat food has taurine in so would have needed to buy that separately

so the faff of pouches commenced and continues

what would really handy is a carton or bottle of gravy like you can buy the milk in to get a bit more hydration for my cats who are elderly, clean water averse, mostly in-house so no dirty puddles available except usual hairball vomit or occasional accident on way to litter tray see earlier elderly descriptor

cat ‘soup’ in pouches is definitely the work of someone who hates cats, or cat ladies

maybe JDVance is a cat food factory mogul?

I’ll have a look at some brands mentioned here - I hope my DC ensures I dine on venison when I reach dotage 😂

I was with you right up until the penultimate paragraph. Mind you, ours eat anything that's left unattended - and I mean anything: pizza, the house dressing you get on salad, pie and mash, even been known to snaffle a Ferrero Roche. And yes, I know that chocolate is poisonous to cats but nobody told mine and my son left one out 🙄

redalex261 · 30/09/2024 10:29

Ha! As a (former) cat slave I fully agree with everything in OP. But, my current furry masters (two dictatorial Jack Russell terriers) do not “eat anything” (or even the same things)😬. No fish dog food. No repeats - variety needed. Regular garnishing of mince/chicken/pork to make tinned/pouch fodder acceptable.

Very limited choice (most expensive only) dry kibble. Cost a bloody fortune.

Ladyzfactor · 30/09/2024 10:31

I accidently order tuna and chicken flavor instead of just tuna flavored the other day. If there is anyone in the Midwest America who needs 11 cans of tuna/chicken flavor let me know. Two cats that I saved from a dumpster turn out to be picky 🙄

Crikey. That's fussiness of cat-like magnitude 😂

The jelly ones come out all in one go and clean of you squeeze the sides of the pouch towards each other slightly (to make the opening as wide as possible)

Also the sheba ones open really nicely. My cat only eats sheba. She's fancy.

ThisIsWhatIDo · 30/09/2024 10:44

applaws do some smaller tins and no beef/lamb flavours

Julen7 · 30/09/2024 10:13

Yes or squirrel perhaps mmm yum

😂 I think they would love that !

BurntBroccoli · 30/09/2024 10:50

I have a pair of cat scissors that I use to just cut straight across the top. SO much easier then I squeeze everything out by rolling so his lordship gets the correct amount of gravy.

BuzzieLittleBee · 30/09/2024 10:50

The pouches open and 'pour' fine if you scrunch them up a bit before opening, so the contents is not a solid lump. I've never had any issues with the contents going anywhere except the cat's bowl.

Pickingmyselfup · 30/09/2024 10:51

I hate the pouches, tins are much better. My cat gets Nutriment which I really rate. A tub lasts at least 2 days if not 3 and we just spoon a bit out at a time. It's mess and smell free, the empty tubs get washed out and recycled.

Cat scissors? Who knew!

The lamb is close behind the beef. I remember they used to do rabbit and my cats (from years ago) loved that one.

I absolutely hate the sachets but Madam only has half so a tin would last her nearly a week. No way would she accept the same flavour for that long 🙀

Yes my cat strand like the beef or lamb. Makes sense really as they would never eat this in the wild.

Ever seen a tabby bring down a reindeer? Majestic, I tell you.

Katemax82 · 30/09/2024 10:58

My cat detests the lamb one

sundayagainagain · 30/09/2024 11:15

My cat will only eat the gravy.

Just squeeze the sachet from the sides.

BurntBroccoli · 30/09/2024 11:17

I do wish they would put the Sheba fresh and fine in a tin though. It's the only one my cat will eat (and only the gravy one).
Tried him once on human food - cooked chicken but he hated it! Fussy sod! He does quite like a bit of haddock when we have fish and chips but that's very rare.

Bpickle1 · 30/09/2024 11:19

We should set up an exchange programme as my cat will not eat the fishy or chicken flavours but loves the beef and lamb flavours - we need to swap!

BurntBroccoli · 30/09/2024 11:21

Is there a cat food Vinted thing anywhere where you can swap unwanted sachets for ones your cat will eat?!

BurntBroccoli · 30/09/2024 11:22

Snap @Bpickle1!!
Have just typed this too 😁

That is some commitment...!!! Just the smell of it makes me gag...

Julen7 · 30/09/2024 11:32

I just take unwanted by my cats) sachets and put them in the Cat Rescue collection trolley at the supermarket

We were recommened to give the cats the spring water from tins of tuna (only the spring water ones, not brine obviously). We empty it into a bowl when we're having tuna and dilute it with about the same of fresh water - ours love it and they actually drink it!
