Toothbrushes!

We used to keep 2 bathroom cups, 1 for toothpastes & 1 for toothbrushes. But the toothbrush cup got manky slimy wet gunk in the bottom regularly. It was grim to clean & grim to hold my brush knowing the end had been in the paste-y tacky gloop. To avoid this I'd need to clean it every other day which basically isn't going to happen (don't judge lol). Kids won't clean it & tbh I don't want them at the cleaning products yet especially spraying ones near our toothbrushes. Kids seem incapable of not putting toothbrushes back unless still dripping wet btw.

Other iissue is in a cup, toothbrushes can fall to touch heads. We all find this ick and kids then refuse to brush teeth until new toothbrush provided.

Found the holder in pic which has been perfect in so many ways. Separates brush heads, has drain holes, came treated with microban. However over time the microban has been beaten & it now grows black colonies down each holder with alarming speed! Impossible to clean fully as so narrow.

What're ppl doing to manage these issues? Am I missing something. I don't want anything that needs drilling into walls etc. But all I can find are cups or ones where the brushheads will again risk regular contact!

Ready to be enlightened 😀

Electric toothbrushes.

MissSkegness1951 · 29/09/2024 11:16

We have one attached to the wall but you can also buy self adhesive ones that require no drilling

Electric toothbrushes, individual cases for them so they are covered (no poop particles floating around in the air).

I dry the "body" of mine after using and also leave it on for a few seconds after using so most of the water comes out.

Plastic cases can go in the dishwasher, but mine haven't even grown moldy if I make sure to dry the brush.

Tulip8 · 29/09/2024 11:18

We have a Joseph Joseph organiser and it has individual sections which we keep our toothbrush and our razor in (5 adults/teens here).

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 29/09/2024 11:19

It's cute!

im not 7, so i don't care about toothbrushes 'touching' 😂😂

however, my toothbrush is electric & lives on its stand and the toothpaste in the drawer.

but that doesn't really help in a family situation. I'd just rinse the toothbrush mug or holder out everytime I brushed my teeth. If you're doing it a couple of times a day, you shouldn't need to use cleaning chemicals.

you could have adults paste & brushes in one pot & kids in another less chance of 'touching' if only 2 brushes.

kids 😂😂😂

This Joseph Joseph one in family bathroom, clean it out weekly but it's never really dirty. I just have a tumbler one in ensuite as it's just me but also clean that weekly.

Skipsurvey · 29/09/2024 11:20

there is some sort of brush in the bathroom that i use the clean the mug, it is wonderful, someone's make up brush, so soft and pliable

PictureOfTheSea · 29/09/2024 11:23

Ooh we have this problem, I don't know why its never occurred to me to find a better holder...maybe something like this metal toothbrush caddy ?

MonsteraMama · 29/09/2024 11:24

Yep, another one with the Joseph and Joseph organiser. I haven't noticed an accumulation of wet gunk, the thing just gets slung in the dishwasher once every few weeks and it's fine.

Jaehee · 29/09/2024 11:25

Give the toothbrush a good shake and dry the handle before you put it in the cup.

Catsmere · 29/09/2024 11:27

My toothbrushes (one for me and one for my cat) and my toothpaste all sit in my cup. They don't get black mould or even yellow water stains on them, because I clean the cup and wipe them all regularly.

NahNotHavingIt · 29/09/2024 11:28

I've got a little wire rack holder that holds 6 brushes and a tube of toothpaste, and it just sits in the bathroom cabinet.

To rinse, I've got some tiny little plastic shot glasses that stack upside down, so they don't hold steam moisture.

TeabySea · 29/09/2024 11:31

Toothbrush goes in cup, or (in the case of the electric one) on shelf. Both types get a good shake off after use.
Cup goes in dishwasher regularly and shelf gets wiped down.
Easy.

Hedgerow2 · 29/09/2024 11:41

You'd be better off with electric toothbrushes - especially for kids. You can get them with quadrant timers that buzz after 30 seconds so you keep brushing each quarter of your mouth until the brush buzzes. Stops you rushing the job, flashes red if you press too hard and altogether makes for healthier teeth.

Ours stand up on their own when they're not charging. They can leave a small pool of liquid where they stand, but easier to wipe that away with a bit of tissue paper than clean a cup.

80smonster · 29/09/2024 11:48

We use glass tumblers, these go into the dishwasher each week when the bathroom is cleaned, so no opportunity for mould to set in. You could also wipe the toothbrushes before popping them in, it’s the wet toothbrushes dripping that causes the gunk.

AutumnGarland · 29/09/2024 11:50

I have an electric toothbrush but we keep toothpaste and DH’s toothbrush in a glass. I just swill the glass out every day and it doesn’t get that horrible gunk in it.

SanMarzano · 29/09/2024 11:51

We have the Joseph Joseph one and electric toothbrushes and have the same issue with gunk even though we dry our toothbrushes after use.

Our toothbrushes didn’t come with cases so maybe I need to get them. I hate just having them standing up outside of a cup etc because if you so much as look at them the bastards fall over!

I have this too! You can take out the section bit from inside and give it all a clean. Wide enough for electric toothbrushes also x

Bluevelvetsofa · 29/09/2024 11:15

Electric toothbrushes.

And just give them a good wipe occasionally.

Relearningbehaviour · 29/09/2024 11:57

These

Where do you keep yours?
StressedQueen · 29/09/2024 12:20

They're all kept in the bathroom cupboard in cups or just standing upright.

Anotherlastminutepanic · 29/09/2024 13:55

Great info, I'm off work tm so looking forward to exploring all these alternatives then, hopefully make a new purchase 😁
No dishwasher here so need something easily cleanable. I have a cheap designated toothbrush for cleaning bathroom crevices but even that can't get into the brush holders of our current one.
