London Wembley travel help!

I'm going to a concert at Wembley next year and been getting tied up in knots trying to plan travel routes with TFL or citymapper. Every route I try has a hazard sign on it for closures etc. Please can any London locals help me?

The concert ends at 11pm on a Saturday night. We might leave 15 mins early for what it's worth.

We are happy to walk for up to 30 minutes to get to bus stops or tube stops away from Wembley Stadium as I know how busy it will be there. Then, happy to travel another 30 minutes-ish on a bus or tube to get to a hotel. This is the bit I'm stuck on. I was looking at Ealing Broadway as a possible area for hotels but don't mind.

The next day we will be travelling to St Pan for the train home.

Please may I have some local wisdom?

Thank you!

way way way too early to be doing this op

london transport system has closures all the time

go on tfl,go to route planner, get an idea of the route and a few days before the concert, check out for planned engineering works

I can help! I live in North London but went to see Taylor Swift in the summer.

If I were you, I would stay at the Holiday Inn Express in swiss cottage though I have not stayed myself. Then you can walk to Finchley Road tube station which is only one stop to Wembley. If you leave the concert 15 to 20 minutes before the end you will be fine. They will still be quite a lot of people leaving early but you will make your way along Olympic Way towards the tube station and you will get on a train. Then you can just get one tube stop back to Finchley Road tube and walk to the hotel.

If you stay till the end of the concert, then I can’t help! My daughter did that and it took her an hour to walk the short distance from the stadium to the tube station because of the crowds.

Good luck and enjoy!

Ah I see... but I do need to book the hotel soon I think. Any thoughts on areas for the hotel that are generally accessible within an hour of Wembley? (Eg a 30 min max walk then a bus/tube?) thank you :)

Just get the tube from Wembley, it’s a Saturday so the night tube is open.

Ealing is out the way of Wembley and Kings cross so I wouldn’t stay there.

CraftyYankee · 28/09/2024 14:35

Tons of hotels by Wembley itself, you could just stay there. Otherwise look for something along the Jubilee line.

Depends what your budget is!

I would look at areas around Kings Cross like Camden or Islington, I think there’s a travelodge in Angel

Westfacing · 28/09/2024 14:36

As you're leaving from St Pancras the next day I would stay in the general Kings Cross Area, not Ealing.

Metropolitan Line to Wembley from King's Cross/St Pancras.

Westfacing · 28/09/2024 14:37

There's a Premier Inn at King's Cross.

SapphireOpal · 28/09/2024 14:38

Another vote for stay near kings cross!

dixkybow · 28/09/2024 14:40

You might be too late do you are looking for a hotel at Wembley, depending on what the show is they could be booked up already.

I would plan to travel back into London if you can't stay near the venue

Funkyslippers · 28/09/2024 14:41

I know nothing about different areas of London but we're staying at Premier Inn Wembley Park which looks to be around a 20 min walk from the stadium. We've got a concert at Ovo Wembley Arena in Nov

SmallPaperBoat · 28/09/2024 14:43

Thanks folks. Yes Wembley hotels are already sold out so we do need to travel.

Do you think just wait out the Wembley park tube queue? I was trying to be clever walking out of area to find other transport links.

Harrow is one bus away from Wembley (the 182 - roughly 15 / 20 minutes at a normal time, obviously will be longer following a concert). There is a premier inn in Harrow, then the met line from Harrow on the hill goes straight to King’s Cross.

Avoid Ealing, that seems like it would add big complications to an otherwise straight forward journey, OP.

Have fun x

FKAT · 28/09/2024 14:45

I would stay near Euston. Metropolitan line or overground to Wembley and walkable to Kings X. There's loads of cheap chain type hotels there.

Wembley tube will be busy but fine. Do not wander around Wembley at 11pm at night - it's safe but a complete dump and cut up by the north circular / M1 & A41 slip roads/industrial estates. There are no clever alternative options back into town. Just queue for a tube.

I've no idea why you'd stay near Ealing.

Wembley Central is about a 20/30 minute walk, I did it once. I was with someone who knew the way though so I don't know how easy it would be to head in the right direction after the concert if you didn't know it.

Saturday will have night tube so you can stay fairly far out if you are in one of those lines as they run all night.

Anything remotely near will probably be very expensive now - the time to book is as soon as the concert is announced on a cancellable rate.

Davros · 28/09/2024 14:48

Don't go to Ealing! I agree with Swiss Cottage or King's X

Overitallnow · 28/09/2024 14:52

Wembley is easy from Kings Cross - live near and done it many times. Just get the Metropolitan line. I would leave the concert a bit early as you suggest. There at 3 Travelodges a walk from Kings X (Travelodge Kings X Royal Scott, Travelodge London Central Kings X and Travelodge Farringdon), Premier Inn, Premier Inn Hub amongst others.

DannSindWirHelden · 28/09/2024 14:56

Top tip, download the map of London to your phone before you set off, so you know where you are and can see where to walk. If you don't then the map will be downloading live which can be tricky for bandwidth in a big crowd.

On a Saturday the tubes will be running late so there's not the same panic as there would be at a midweek concert. If you just stick it out in a queue then you will get back to Central London eventually and there's limited risk of things going wrong.

I'd say that Kings Cross is a solid choice to stay at, but if you aim for slightly west of that, towards Euston then you'd be within walking distance of Kings X and also an easy walk from Baker Street on the Jubilee line to get back from Wembley Park tube.

Blackcountryexile · 28/09/2024 14:57

I'd look at stops on the Jubilee line from Wembley Park tube station and choose a hotel near one of them. If price is more important than distance I'd suggest Premier Inn Canning Town. It's a 40 minute journey but no changes. The station is a very short walk to the hotel on.the same side of the road.
I think.the worst part is the walk from.the Stadium to the station and that takes as long as it takes.

The queue for Wembley Tube is long but well managed - you could leave the stadium slightly early to get ahead but if you’re staying over, what’s the rush to get back? If you’re leaving from St Pancras, your hotel choices open up rather than needing to stay around Wembley which will be either sold out or pricier because there’s an event on.

SmallPaperBoat · 28/09/2024 15:03

Yay, thank you all!!!

Going to get looking again but with a bit of clarity now :) thank you

Are you close enough to London to drive home that night? We paid £40 to park at Wembley for a stadium show earlier this year, it finished at 10:30pm and we were on the M1 37 minutes later. It was fantastic, really well managed and organised and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone. If you're too far away to drive home you could drive part way and stay at a hotel further out if you can get a late check in, or check in on your way in!

Ohnobackagain · 28/09/2024 15:28

@SmallPaperBoat the tube queues move quite quick to be honest. We once walked to the next tube station (further away from London) and got the tube ‘in’ to our hotel so we were already on when we got to the station near Wembley itself. Also we have stayed close by (book something further out on free cancel and then look at Wembley nearer the date) - people’s plans change. And another option is to use bus/walk combination, or get a takeaway and then go for the tube.

kathmacc · 28/09/2024 15:59

The Hub by Premier Inn in Kings Cross is great - my relatives always stay there when visiting me in London and it’s a really good price for central London.

CraftyYankee · 28/09/2024 17:59

The tube queue is actually great fun after a concert IMO, everyone is buzzing from the event and lots of singalongs of greatest hits!😁
