To buy a fan heater? (Holiday home related)

Splendud · 28/09/2024 10:45

We arrived at a coastal UK holiday home last night. The owner has set up hive heating to only allow heating for 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening, and the max temperature is set to 18C. We have paid just shy of £1,000 for this holiday accommodation.

There's a weather warning for wind and rain tomorrow and, knowing this, we planned a cosy reading and board games day tomorrow. Having no heating between 9am and 6pm is not an attractive option tomorrow.

WIBU to go to Argos and buy a fan heater?

Yanbu. Being cold is miserable

Birdahoy · 28/09/2024 10:47

YANBU but I would first ask the owner to amend the heating schedule given the expected weather.

Rhayader · 28/09/2024 10:47

Tape some ice in a ziplock bag to the thermostat.

But also get a fan heater!

Genius!!!

But I'd also get intouch with the owner that the place is cold 🥶 being cold is miserable and you can leave that as a review

SometimesCalmPerson · 28/09/2024 10:50

Yanbu

MonsteraMama · 28/09/2024 10:51

Can you message the owner and explain that you'll be in all day and the weather is bad so could they please adjust the settings or turn the heating on for the day?

To be honest though we live near the coast somewhere very blustery and we've not yet had to have the heating on during the day, only first thing when it's very cold, so I don't think the settings they have are particularly unusual. Giving them the benefit of the doubt maybe this is just usual for them and they're not being Scroogey! Hopefully they won't be adverse to upping the temp a bit for you since you're paying to be there!

44PumpLane · 28/09/2024 10:52

Oh my goodness the ice idea is genius!

However as others have noted I'd contact the owner asap, if no reply then absolutely go and buy a small fan heater.

BeMintBee · 28/09/2024 11:01

I would contact the owners first as that’s not on. If they’re not responsive I would definitely be getting the little fan heater!

Tiredofthewhirring · 28/09/2024 11:15

18 degrees isn't going to feel warm, as the colder parts of the house will be 15/16

I'd say 20 all day or you're getting a heater

BoobyDazzler · 28/09/2024 11:16

Yanbu, at all.

I wouldn’t even mention it to the owner.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/09/2024 11:18

I'd be complaining to the owner. The ice is genius.

I'm not paying to go away and be cold.

fruitbrewhaha · 28/09/2024 11:21

Contact the owner if you’re cold. If they say no, tell them you are purchasing a heater which will cost them more than having the central heating on.

goingdownfighting · 28/09/2024 11:22

If the thermostat comes off the wall (our hive one does to change the battery), put it in the fridge.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/09/2024 11:31

I'd contact the owner, an electric fan heater on all day is likely to cost them more in energy than the central heating.

It depends where you are on the coast. Here in the South of England it's been wet and windy but not actually that cold. I have not out the jeating on at all yet ansd I have all my windows open this morning and my kitchen thermostat is still showing 20 degrees.

Splendud · 28/09/2024 12:29

Just heard back from the owner. She won't change the settings so off to Argos we go!

It would make the heating keep going while it's timed to be on, but it wouldn't increase the hours.

OP I'm glad you're buying the heater. We did it once, well worth it.

PS I'd contact the owner, an electric fan heater on all day is likely to cost them more in energy than the central heating. Do not mention the heater to her. Just use it!

Wow. That's SO greedy of her, for a thousand pounds a week you deserve to be as warm as you like,

I'm really glad you're buying the heater. Make sure you add her meanness to the review

BurbageBrook · 28/09/2024 13:41

What a twatty owner. Leave them a terrible review!

That's pretty poor. I'm fine with the heating being set sensibly low, but I expect to be able to turn it up if needed. Maybe mine some crypto this afternoon?

KnottedTwine · 28/09/2024 13:47

Outrageous. We stayed in a holiday rental with one of those smart thermostat things and we needed to adjust it for similar reasons, the weather was awful and we planned a lazy day in the house. Owner was fine about it, adjusted it her end and if I remember correctly gave us a code to let us adjust it ourselves - all she asked that was we restored to default on leaving.

18c is far too cold. 20c is normal room temperature, and limiting the times of the heating is not on either. Hope your fan heater keeps you nice and warm and leave her a snotty review online, and write in the guest book too, if there is one.

Lifeasweknowitisrandom · 28/09/2024 13:49

6 hours of heating in September is more than enough.

Wilma55 · 28/09/2024 13:50

There's a button on top of the Hive to boost the temperature, could you do that?

KnottedTwine · 28/09/2024 13:50

Lifeasweknowitisrandom · 28/09/2024 13:49

🙄There's always one.

We have snow forecast for parts of Scotland tomorrow, and I scraped ice off my car earlier in the week.
