To buy a fan heater? (Holiday home related)

Splendud · 28/09/2024 10:45

We arrived at a coastal UK holiday home last night. The owner has set up hive heating to only allow heating for 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening, and the max temperature is set to 18C. We have paid just shy of £1,000 for this holiday accommodation.

There's a weather warning for wind and rain tomorrow and, knowing this, we planned a cosy reading and board games day tomorrow. Having no heating between 9am and 6pm is not an attractive option tomorrow.

WIBU to go to Argos and buy a fan heater?

It's not that cold though.

KnottedTwine · 28/09/2024 13:58

@Lifeasweknowitisrandom maybe not where you live but not everyone lives in the same place as you.

I would have thought that was obvious. Clearly not.

I live in one of the coldest parts of the UK and it's not been that bad. Sure it's like Alaska elsewhere though.

BabyR · 28/09/2024 14:04

I would contact Air B&B since they aren’t willing to deal with it.
Make sure to leave a bad review too since the owner would not rectify it for you.

Why the fuck are people arguing, if you're cold, you're cold and you have every right to have the heating on if required in an expensive holiday home! I can't actually believe owner has refused to amend the heating, I'd be sure to leave an honest review

I’ve rented places with stickers on the appliances to say they’ve been approved by the relevant inspector.
Put the oven on and open the door to heat the house. Make loads of baked potatoes once the place is warm enough. No owner can object to you using the equipment supplied but they might if you buy in uninspected appliances.

Cheeesus · 28/09/2024 14:14

Make sure the heating is on for the full three hours if you can. Our hive thermostat comes off the wall, so move it somewhere colder.

CharlotteBog · 28/09/2024 14:16

I stayed in an airbnb in Edinburgh in Oct which had a Nest thingy. I couldn't work out how to make the flat warmer (a beautiful tenement with the associated high ceilings). I kept messaging, she kept pushing back telling me it was fine. I wasn't there during the day anyway, but both evenings and mornings were miserable.
I hate not being able to control heating/cooling myself. Hosts don't get to decide whether a guest is comfortable or not.

They are never going to know if the occupier uses their own electrical appliances.
Would you worry about plugging in a hairdryer or straighteners you'd brought from home?

halava · 28/09/2024 14:19

Days can be tolerable, but night times can turn quite cold in Autumn. I think that is very mean and quite shortsighted of the owner to deny you adequate heat in miserable weather.

But I can tell you that even in Southern Spain, where we go for Christmas period it can be absolutely Baltic at night even though daytime temps are often in the 20s. My brother owns the property and is very generous about us using the heating which is through the aircon system. But since properties are not built for cold weather down there, and there are tiled floors and no insulation, the properties do not retain the heat. It is a futile exercise to get warm at night, so we brought a heated throw with us last year (left it there as a gift), and brother got a dual use electric underblanket. It does the trick!

You are right to buy and use a fan heater. Nothing worse than feeling cold indoors!

Just heard back from the owner. She won't change the settings so off to Argos we go!

there taking the piss buy 2

Davros · 28/09/2024 14:28

I'm shocked. I have a holiday home and our thermostat can be changed by renters. We also supply oil filled heaters and, if our agent told us the house was too cold for guests, we'd up the heating settings, no questions asked. I suspect you're using Airbnb, another disadvantage compared to a holiday letting company

It's a UK based holiday lettings company that we have used probably ten times in the past. I have emailed them too. I have noticed that the holiday let is now showing as a 3 star.and I never book anything below a 4 star so I think it may have been downgraded recently.

The views are beautiful and we have the heater now so we are going to make the most of it.

6 hours of heating in September is more than enough.

The month is irrelevant. It's the temperature which determines the need for heating.

mindutopia · 28/09/2024 14:36

We live on the Devon/Cornwall border on the moor where it is always wetter and colder than everywhere else. We haven’t had the heating on yet. Currently in a t-shirt with the windows open. I don’t think 18c is ridiculously cold. Can you not put a jumper on if you’re in during the day?

I'm in a relatively warm part of South Wales and it's 18 inside with everything shut. At 18 I need a jumper or oodie, especially if I'm sitting still.

Davros · 28/09/2024 14:41

@Splendud I'm even more shocked (easily shocked!). The agent should insist it's sorted out. I hope you have a lovely holiday, visit Norfolk next time, you'll find us on the most well known holiday rental site 😉

streamy · 28/09/2024 14:44

@Davros ooh, where about in Norfolk are you?

Jellyslothbridge · 28/09/2024 14:48

I always travel with a hot water bottle mainly for pain relief if gallstones play up but also good to boost feeling toastie warm

Brand new items don't need PAT testing.

Lovely, stayed there many times, but not in recent years.

And I'm in a currently sunny area with a door open and I'm sat in a oodie and long trousers, I'm getting cold. But if I was 20 years younger I wouldn't be cold and in another 20 years I'll be quite old and probably freezing. It's not only where in the world you are, it's also your age, any problems like reynauds syndrome and the type of house you are in. I havent had the heating on yet, doesnt mean a thing.
And if I was in a holiday home I'd be wanting the heating on for the day if I was going to be sat in it for the day.
