To ask about your opinion on the RSPCA after Brian May resignation

He has resigned because the RSPCA's response to poor animal welfare was completely inadequate.
When I reported an animal in distress, they refused to investigate, and it was left to my local animal shelter -which is struggling for money - to come to the rescue.
I find it all extremely concerning. Does anyone else have any experiences?

Horses again.

RSPCA man: "Who owns them?"

Me: "Not sure, does it matter?"

RSPCA man: "If one of them were dead, it's better as it helps us with our cause"

Then he fucked off.

RSPCA banked £75 million from unspent donations last three years. People should really do their research before donating to ANY charity. So much creamed off in 'projects' that the real cause has been lost long ago.

darksigns · 27/09/2024 22:11

My opinion of Brian May was already high, this has confirmed it.

Pebbles16 · 27/09/2024 22:12

Not a charity I would ever support.

BotterMon · 27/09/2024 22:13

Not worth a penny of anyone's money. They are useless unless part of a televised rescue.

This has been known for years but the gullible keep on giving and they sit on their fat salaries and do nothing. If their money was split between charities who actually care and act, the animal world would be a better place.

Purplebunnie · 27/09/2024 22:14

Didn't want anything to do with a cat that turned up at the rental I was in. Everything was left to me

I took her in but had to hand her over to the Cats Protection League as my own cats were due to join us.

I will never ever give any money to them again

Bruisername · 27/09/2024 22:16

I remember 10-15 years ago they got a lot of criticism and calls of hypocrisy for using bolt guns on dogs

Appleloafcake · 27/09/2024 22:22

3 times I've contacted them and 3 times they've refused to come out and told me to either ignore the animal or try and find a local charity to help. In addition to that, they suggested having a healthy cat who belonged to a family member put to sleep when she needed rehoming.

They were also uninterested when I reported a group of travellers who were hunting rabbits with slingshots. Had to contact the police instead.

I've far more confidence in the work my local volunteer run charities do and much happier to support them.

I actually had a good experience with the rspca who came and cut a fox loose who’d got caught in next doors netting

having said that I think their strength is in the legal side of animal welfare- the actual prosecuting and convicting humans who cause suffering.

they should ditch the other side as there are plenty of other services that will do that, and from pp it would seem they know that and offload that side anyway.

stick to what they’re good at- lawyers, court and criminal cases involving animals.

Yes but unfortunately the public perception is that they are out there rescuing abused or neglected animals, hence the large inflow of donations.

If it was more widely realised that their main focus is legal and campaigning then no doubt they would be a less popular charity. Shame the volunteer organisations who do more of the real rescue work can't access the same level of funds

Shufflebumnessie · 27/09/2024 22:27

I've contacted them on a few occasions over the past 10 years, and only once did they offer a miniscule amount of assistance. In that instance I still had to trap the extremely feral cat, transport it to the vets, collect it again and rehome it. The RSPCA agreed to pay for the vet bill if I did all the work!

I used to donate to them regularly but stopped after they a) refused to help us with a feral cat (different to the one mentioned above) & her 4 kittens, & b) they wrote and said basically said my £10 a month wasn't enough so I should increase it to £25!!!! I'd supported them for years, bought endless raffle tickets, sent extra money at Christmas etc but that still wasn't enough according to the condescending and arrogant fundraising appeal letter! They've not had a penny since, & neither has Cat's Protection as they're just as bad.

I've never found the RSPCA any use. We are farmers and get a lot of abandoned pets dumped out in the countryside. Experience has taught us never to involve the RSPCA as they will not help. Any local finding waifs and strays brings them to us and we keep them or find them homes or a shelter run by another charity. That is why we found homes for over 30 cats and kittens one particularly bad year, and why we had 13 cats that no one else wanted, on the farm.

Thank you @Feckedupbundle Your heart is in the right place.

I would never donate to the RSPCA.

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 27/09/2024 22:44

I’m currently
being harassed by them for what will turn about to be (again) a malicious complaint. The last time even though they knew it had no truth, they offered to help us with a sick puppy. Kept
forgetting to collect him. We finally arranged a time as he was poorly and he died on the way to hospital!!!

fallenbranches · 27/09/2024 22:45

Yes not great experience here either though admittedly was some years ago now. Two situations: first I found a litter of abandoned kittens in a park near us. They refused to come and said the mum would be back even though they were there for weeks, no mum in sight. Second, I found an injured cat, which didn't seem too bad so I took her in and they put her down a few days later. I was a bit shocked and asked why. They said she would have needed major surveyor and it was a risk. My SIL worked at a vets reception and she too said they had a reputation for putting down many animals for reasons which didn't seem to quite make sense to the staff who worked at the vets.

Merrilydancing · 27/09/2024 22:51

Our dog was investigated by them as apparently it was too thin, except they failed to take into account that it was a racing breed so meant to be thin, had a shiny cost, bright eyes and clearly well looked after. Clearly had no clue what to look for when there are countless animals being abused.

PatchworkElmer · 27/09/2024 22:57

I’ve also called them before, and was told to walk away and leave the animal. Fortunately a local vet helped. I donate to animal sanctuaries now.

Tusktusk · 27/09/2024 21:58

These stories are shocking. What do they actually do then?

They specialise in making heartbreaking adverts that raise a huge amount of money that they spend on executive offices and luxury cars for those at the top!

I have several disgusting experiences I could share, but there are plenty here already.

Guavafish1 · 27/09/2024 23:01

I don’t trust charities anymore

i think they whole thing with Captain Moore and his daughter, Naomi Campbell and oxfam with these half nake girls. Most of the funding comes from government and there is a lot of tax exemption

CuteCillian · 27/09/2024 23:02

This is shocking. Is Blue Cross a worthwhile charity to donate too?

ArnieandBob · 27/09/2024 23:05

I lost all faith in them after I found a dog locked in a car on a hot day. They promised to come and investigate but never did turn up despite many phone calls to them. They just weren't interested.

Everythingtastesbetterwithcheese · 27/09/2024 23:09

Years ago I use to volunteer for them. The vets there I couldn't fault but the management, were disgusting. I remember one dog had a heart condition treatable just couldn't excise, and they wanted to euthanise it. She had 10 days in which to be rehomed before they put her down. I appealed in the local paper for someone to adopt her as she was a sweet loving little thing, and she went to a lady who was housebound who totally adored the dog and she was perfect as she couldnt walk a dog anyway. The management was furious I did it without permission and had "gone behind their backs" and i was told they didnt need me anymore.

I agree.

I don't donate to Big Charities for that reason and of the Big Charities, I'd put RSPCA amongst the worst.

Will not touch them with a barge pole.

lb640 · 27/09/2024 23:15

I was advised by vets to call them as my cat was one of a number badly injured by some idiot neighbour placing barbed wire, nails, metal and glass spikes everywhere (laid as traps).
Summarising but it's not allowed where we lived anyway due to public footpath and presence of dogs, children and wildlife as well as pets

Neighbour wanted to keep kids and animals off her property (and buys a home right by a footpath, school and woodland...the mind boggles!)

RSPCA couldn't have cared less even though the staff member said it wasn't allowed and was dangerous and looked at my cats ruined leg, but said phone council who said I need to phone RSPCA and it was a pointless circle. Nobody interested at all

Dangerous stuff is still there three years on, animals continue to be harmed and who knows when a kid might too, if they venture off footpath and come into contact with it on the verges!

I agree. I only donate to local small charities where I know where the money is going.
