Does teething cause loose stools?

user242526 · 27/09/2024 18:43

Hello,

My DD (10M) has had 3 loose stools today. She's showing signs of teething (drooling, irritable, wants to put everything in her mouth etc).

Are the loose stools a part of teething or are they separate to that?

The internet gives mixed information so I want to ask all the mums out there that may (or may not) have gone through this!

Thanks

I always found nappy rash flared up when teething was bad, so I'd say yes!

kierenthecommunity · 27/09/2024 18:45

Yeah. Teething nappies are grim 🤢

Its due to the extra acid from their drooling

MoveOnTheCards · 27/09/2024 18:45

Yep. DC had sloppier nappies when he was teething. Something to do with the saliva and them swallowing/ingesting it and it working through or something. Think I was told something like that!

theonlygirl · 27/09/2024 18:45

Yes can do.

Dolphinnoises · 27/09/2024 18:46

Yes, it’s all the dribble they’re swallowing. The enzymes in it make the stool… slightly acidic or something? I couldn’t swear to the reason, it’s been ages. But yes they do.

GratitudeGoddess · 27/09/2024 18:46

Yes, it always happened with my little ones and their cheeks were always redder during teething

boredaf · 27/09/2024 18:47

In my experience yes. My youngest especially would have awful nappies and horrendous nappy rash that appeared out of nowhere, he’d be completely clear and then have a red raw bum two hours later.

SeeSawSeen · 27/09/2024 18:47

In my DD's case, absolutely! Teething nappies were... something else.

Comedycook · 27/09/2024 18:48

Yes both my dc had this when teething...which resulted in nappy rash.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 27/09/2024 18:48

Dodgy bottoms with every single new tooth.

Woodworm2020 · 27/09/2024 18:51

Yes it did for my DC too - sympathies, I remember it being a challenging time!

Thanks everyone and is it normal for baby to wake more at night and be warmer to touch (37.1 degrees)?

The issue I'm having is that she has been poorly with a virus (Bronchiolitis) recently and now the teething symptoms + loose stools I'm trying to work out if they're connected or if two different things are happening at the same time? She didn't feel warmer to touch when she was in the thick of it with Bronchiolitis but since the loose stools today and being fussy at night the last two nights she's felt warmer than she usually does today.

Yes to both. Teething can be painful for them and cause a slightly raised temperature.

Yes,.runny poops

Yes

My little one has experienced looser stalls when teething so I would say yes.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 27/09/2024 20:30

Every health visitor will tell you that it doesn't.

About 75% of parents of babies and toddlers I've known will tell you that it does.

All I can tell you for sure is that I never noticed a correlation in my two children - but that's two out of billions of children.

user242526 · 27/09/2024 21:04

She's had three loose stools today - hopefully that number is still normal for teething

AgileGreenSeal · 27/09/2024 21:07

yes, they definitely are.

110APiccadilly · 27/09/2024 21:10

I'm my experience, definitely. Also keep a close eye for nappy rash as again in my experience this is linked. I believe it's something to do with a change in their saliva?

pointythings · 27/09/2024 21:13

Definitely, mine had both the horrible nappies and the slight temp. If your baby is otherwise well in themselves, still eatin etc. they're fine. If it lasts more than a few days, get it checked out.

Krupkrups · 27/09/2024 21:14

Yes in my experience DC suffered terribly

TheHateIsNotGood · 27/09/2024 21:19

Yes it can

My health visitor was fab - she said we're supposed to tell you that teething doesn't cause horrible nappies but it does 😂 mine used to get crusty ears like eczema too when they were cutting a tooth! I swore by those Ashton & Parsons powders, no idea what's in them but they work!
