...to insist dh lets me wash kit after swimming?

DH takes dd swimming in a public pool once every few weeks or so. If it were up to him, he would not wash their costumes and towels afterwards every time. He says it is not "environmentally friendly". He would rather dry them out on a radiator and then wash every few visits or so.

The very idea makes me break out in a cold sweat. AIBU?

I agree with him - sorry. I don't see the problem if they are dried properly.

TheArmadillo · 21/04/2008 18:51

YANBU.

The clorine can damge the costumes if not washed out properly so you would have to buy new ones more frequently.

Probably damage your towels as well.

2point4kids · 21/04/2008 18:52

Doesnt affect the environment if you stick the costume in with a wash you are already doing, they are not exactly bulky!

Think of all the chlorine and other childrens piss that will be soaked into them [spew]

Wash them!

tissy · 21/04/2008 18:53

ours get a cold rinse in the machine, and a proper wash about once a month

claricebeansmum · 21/04/2008 18:54

My DH is the same.

I wash mine and DC and leave his.

Fortunately I have got him out of the habit of taking the bath towels with him and bringing those home and hanging them up to use again...ugggh

DebsCee · 21/04/2008 18:54

I thought that chlorine damaged fabrics if not washed out - likewise your hair!

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 21/04/2008 18:54

are you me?

dp and I have this argument every week after swimming.

As it happens, there's no contest because I just wash them anyway, but he doesn't think they need it.

VanillaPumpkin · 21/04/2008 18:55

Surely they only need a cold rinse through?
TBH though I wash the costumes as they are so small and just go in with a normal wash as someone else said...

seeker · 21/04/2008 18:56

I was assuming that he rinsed the swimsuits at the pool - doesn't everyone do this?

welshdeb · 21/04/2008 18:56

They dont need a full wash but should be rinsed as the chlorine will rot the clothes eventually if not rinsed out. I usually bung them in with whatever is in the washer or just put them on the rinse cycle.

downbutnotout · 21/04/2008 18:59

"Doesn't everyone do this?" Alas, dh does not and I'll be making him read this thread!

Oooh, I feel your pain! DH goes swimming EVERY DAY! If I'm doing a wash, I put them in, if not its rinse only. That would be a waste of power, water (and my time frankly!) if I had to do a full cycle every day.

scottishmummy · 21/04/2008 19:01

lol i wash my own cossie in sink with handwash liquid, no full wash

lljkk · 21/04/2008 19:02

I rarely wash towels (they only get shower water on them?) but suits die fast if not washed / rinsed quickly. Mine get hand washed 5 seconds after we arrive home -- our suits last years in spite of weekly use.

Hulababy · 21/04/2008 19:03

I would have them washed each time too. Chlorine damages the costume material.

Minum · 21/04/2008 19:04

Dry mine on the line, and wash every few times. None of other have ever had any sort of infection. Its all very well to say throw them in with a wash, it doesnt make any difference, but I only run the machine when its full, so over a year, it would mean I ran more loads if I washed the swimming gear every time we used it.

2point4kids · 21/04/2008 19:05

towels also get rubbed around your bum and your bits to dry them - surely that calls for putting them through the wash before you dry your face on it again??

PestoMonster · 21/04/2008 19:07

I always put the towels in the drier (or on the line) and the swimmers themselves in the wash. Costumes will rot if not washed properly straightaway. I don't bother with the towels as we only use them after we've showered, so they don't get chloriney at all.

ladymariner · 21/04/2008 19:07

No, I wash ours every time we go swimming simply cos I'm a bit squeamish to say the least over what is on the changing room floor, and the towels always end up on the floor, I stand on mine and dry my feet then put my socks on. Other peoples hair on the floor makes me boak.

PestoMonster · 21/04/2008 19:09

Ah yes, well if we go to a public pool, then I put the towels in the wash too. For the same reason as LadyMariner.

shoshe · 21/04/2008 19:10

After changing in the communal changing room with my mindees, and seeing other children peeing on the floor, then mindees dropping their towelling ponchos onto said floor, I go with the washing everytime brigade.

bamzooki · 21/04/2008 19:14

The problem is that while the chlorine damages the lycra that is in most swimwear, so does the detergent in the wash.
I work in a sports shop - the advice we have been given is to rinse well with fresh water after use and dry away from direct heat (ie not on a radiator which is also damaging), with infrequent detergent use. So washing frequency will be somewhat dictated by how often you swim iyswim.
So from that I would say the answer is somewhere between your views and your DH's.
Ironic isn't it, given where swimwear is likely to be used, that the lycra is damaged by chlorine, sunshine, heat and detergent?

The towels otoh - personally I wash every time, cos I always end up dropping it on the floor....

Jellyjuice · 21/04/2008 19:17

Yeeeuuuw. Yes, I'm with the wash every time side of the argument. I would normally find more washing to make it up to a full load though, not put them in on their own. DH I doubt would have an opinion on the subject, if it were left up to him, the wet stuff would probably end up left in the bag for the week!

clam · 21/04/2008 19:20

Ummm..... can DH not wash them himself?

downbutnotout · 21/04/2008 19:25

He could clam - but he won't, which is kind of my point!
