To think green beans are just the most revolting vegetable

AngeloMysterioso · 27/09/2024 09:57

They manage to be tough, stringy and weirdly spiky all the at the same time and they have the flavour of a chewed pencil. There is literally no dish I can think of that is enhanced by their presence. They’re the unpleasant bastard cousin of sugarsnap peas and mangetout.

ETA- by green beans I mean runner beans. Just in case there’s any confusion

Broad beans. Awful.

TragicMuse · 27/09/2024 12:50

I don't like them raw either @Comedycook! Indigestion on a plate.

Domainedor · 27/09/2024 12:50

ThreeTescoBags · 27/09/2024 10:01

The most revolting vegetable is okra. All the things you hate about runner beans but with the added downfall of having snot in the middle.

Agreed. I like or can tolerate all other vegetables but Okra is irredeemable.

ThanksHunPenneys · 27/09/2024 12:53

Green beans are my favourite veg 😋
However I think runner beans are a different veg altogether.

DillDanding · 27/09/2024 12:55

Ourdearoldqueen · 27/09/2024 09:59

Nope it’s rocket. It’s like eating shitty hair. It makes me cough.

Rocket would be my death row meal, I love it so much.

But runner beans are just obnoxious. My MiL is always growing them and giving us bags full.

I adore rocket, the pepperier the better. I lived for a few months in a cottage in someone’s grounds, and was encouraged to cut as much rocket in their greenhouse as I liked. And I did like….

ForkTines · 27/09/2024 12:58

Both my babies first solids were puréed green beans…

luckydaytoday · 27/09/2024 13:00

Amazed nobody has mentioned parsnips yet. Too sweet, and either mushy or stringy when cooked. I'd take any of these over a parsnip.

They can be good if spiced. A really well-made curried parsnip soup is delicious. But I agree about the sweetness.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 27/09/2024 13:02

I love all vegetables except sweet potatoes 🤢
Nothing beats a plate of steamed, homegrown runner beans with salted butter and black pepper 😋
Providing you cook them properly, and don’t boil them to death, vegetables are delicious.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/09/2024 13:02

I can't think of any vegetables I don't like but they have to be fresh and cooked properly (and by that I mean NOT boiled to a pulp).

ihaveanaughtydog · 27/09/2024 13:03

Runner beans, celeryand rocket are all the devil's foods as far as I'm concerned.
All that stringy, wooden essentials makes me heave.

Ifailed · 27/09/2024 13:06

As the topic is cooked vegetables, has anyone got their sprouts on yet for xmas?

DuBoo · 27/09/2024 13:09

SoupDragon · 27/09/2024 09:59

Peas. I agree with celery too (I remember DD asking for celery when she lost her sense of taste and smell due to covid. She said it was still revolting because of the texture)

Fresh picked runner beans though are lovely.

Edited

Peas?! No!!! Tiny balls of loveliness.

Celeriac can get in the bin though.

NetballHoop · 27/09/2024 13:12

Another hater of okra here. I'll eat just about everything but not okra.

MyBirthdayMonth · 27/09/2024 13:13

I'll eat most vegetables, but the only good type of bean comes in a tin with HEINZ on the front.

TerfTalking · 27/09/2024 13:18

AhBiscuits · 27/09/2024 10:24

I like every kind of bean. The worst three plants are
Celery / celeriac
Coriander
Fennel

I love all of these! And green beans.

the only veg I struggle with is asparagus, I hate the taste and texture. Give me buttered sprouts over asparagus any day.

Er... I have mentioned them twice! Loathe em!

GiddyRobin · 27/09/2024 13:20

I don't think there's a vegetable out there I don't like! But - they need cooking properly.

I had a boyfriend when I was in my late teens. His mum used to make really nice sounding meals, but the veg was always so overboiled and underseasoned. Cauliflower a sodden sludge. Cabbage shown a grain of salt. Never any butter!

I hate hate hate roast dinners to this day, despite loving all the components (including the gravy), and I blame the pile of greying mush she'd serve up on a Sunday. Lovely woman but she scarred me for life.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 27/09/2024 12:37

I'm glad OP edited that they meant runner beans.

Green beans = wonderful, possibly my favourite veg. I was delighted to have grown them successfully this year.

Runner beans = NOPE. Why the fuck do people grow them when green beans are a much nicer alternative??

Edited

Runner beans picked when they're not too old are lovely, and they crop more heavily that green beans.

ImWearingPantaloons · 27/09/2024 13:43

@CherryValley5 sorry, tried that too.

Still vile. Ditto roasting it in the oven.

WetBandits · 27/09/2024 13:43

I like green beans when they’re properly cooked. If they’re still squeaky, they set my teeth on edge and I can’t bear to bite into one!

Needmoresleep · 27/09/2024 12:47

Broad beans. Awful.

Broad beans are something you have to grow yourself. Frozen ones are a different vegetable altogether, and fresh ones are always picked too late, to maximise yield, and have tough skins. Grown yourelf, and picked at the right stage, they have something of the taste of asparagus - though given the mentions of asparagus on here, I can see why broad beans aren't popular.

coxesorangepippin · 27/09/2024 13:46

Yup

Awful

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/09/2024 13:46

Green beans are lush, especially with a dash of balsamic vinegar.
If you like celery, then you're a wrong'un. It's like eating green string.
Carrots are a Jekyll and Hyde vegetable. Lovely when raw but bleurgh when cooked.
