How much you put in your savings?

Saveees · 26/09/2024 22:58

I put 10% of my net salary, so £300 each month in my savings account.
It feels very little but this is all I can afford at the moment. Just trying to gauge what others might put away?

I’d love if I could save £700-800 a month but recently single, having to put for everything on my own and salary is only £50k

I used to save 1000-1500 per month. Now…literally nothing and I eat into my saving most months. I’m separated, paying rent and going through a divorce. So circumstances have changed a lot…and I’m sure they will be different in another 5 years. That’s life I suppose…

northernballer · 27/09/2024 06:49

10% I my pension, all my bonus each year and £200 per month.

I've just spent a chunk of it moving house though.

Ftctvycdul · 27/09/2024 06:51

Outside of pensions we’re now saving nearly £3000 a month, but we are a couple with a high income. When I was single, living in a council flat to keep costs down, plus paying for a post grad qualification, I was delighted to be able to save £200 per month.

Heatherbell1978 · 27/09/2024 07:00

We put a lot into pensions (me 40% of salary and DH 10% as mine is a better scheme). I put £150 a month into share schemes at work. Then jointly we put in around £1500 a month to a pot but that covers holidays, birthdays, Xmas, house things like the boiler so not sure it's 'savings' as such but we always have a bit there for emergencies.
We're both in our mid 40s so retirement is really what we're 'saving' and everything else is just shorter term.

I’d love if I could save £700-800 a month

Wouldn’t we all? 🤣

MountUnpleasant · 27/09/2024 08:05

£1000 a month into my personal savings and my partner puts money into our joint savings + his personal savings.

Freshersfluforyou · 27/09/2024 08:07

I never saved when money was tighter as it just would have meant living miserably. Asking what percentage other people save is meaningless - how much you save will simply be dependent on your own outgoings. I save about 50% of my income now but i didnt when i had nursery fees to pay etc!

Wonderlust233 · 27/09/2024 08:16

1k a month. Joint earnings of 50k with 2 DC's.

Catza · 27/09/2024 09:11

150 to savings account, 200 into old and expired help to buy ISA which still has a decent interest rate, and then anywhere between 500 and 1k into regular ISA depending on what else I have going on this month. I have very low housing costs though as partner pays 75% of it. So I think it works out about 40-60% of my take home pay most months. I always put money into savings as soon as I get paid and then make do with whatever's left in my account. It does sometimes mean penny pinching at the end of the month but I am saving for a house deposit currently so it's OK.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 27/09/2024 09:35

About £600 a month into my savings account, but I do dip into it fairly often towards the end of the month. I always try to keep at least 5K in the savings account for emergencies, such as car, home maintenance etc.
I also pay £325 per month in AVCs towards my pension.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 27/09/2024 09:36

That £600 equates to about 20% of my net.

coffeelateperson · 27/09/2024 13:01

1k/month, as we are chaild free. and outgoing are a little.

Slackbladder22 · 27/09/2024 13:43

I save about £2,500 a month plus more in my pension but very special circumstances so I’m making hay while I can to make the rest of my life a bit easier

Saveees · 30/09/2024 19:53

Yup, I put money into pension too. Sorry not sure how to quote.

I am trying to save but live at the same time too. If I super squeezed it I could save £500 a month but I want a couple of hundred for fun stuff. So it’s £300 going into savings, £150 ish into pension.

I do have approx 34k in savings and a couple of grand in my normal account.

i just feel like that I’ll never be able to afford to have my own home tho 😕

I put between £300 and £500 in but have no mortgage. Only earn £1900 a month.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 30/09/2024 20:30

I try to max out my ISA so 20K a year. Workplace NHS pension on top of that. I earn about the same as Sue Gray, with a DC at Uni and one in yr13.

Itsmeamandaberry · 30/09/2024 20:33

I'm just about to finish paying a loan and my credit card off so I'm going to put that money into savings so around £700 🙈 a month never really had it so can't miss it

MissAnthr0pe · 30/09/2024 20:36

I save £3000 a month. £1650 into a cash ISA and £1350 into a high interest savings account - both transferred by standing order on the first of every month.

I have a workplace DB pension which I've contributed to since my 20s. The 3K a month saving is to pay off my mortgage in the next couple of years.

Grinchinlaws · 30/09/2024 20:39

20% of my salary goes into my pension and then I save about a third of my take home pay across an ISA (higher risk stocks and shares) and into premium bonds (risk free but prizes not guaranteed!).

Im just about to increase my mortgage though to renovate the house so savings will go down.

LizzyLine · 30/09/2024 20:56

£250 into holiday fund
£100 into general savings/rainy day
£25 into DS's savings account
£30 into DS birthday savings
£130 into Christmas savings
That's pretty much 10% of net. But actually all but £1,200 pa gets spent, so only saving 1% really (not including pension). I should probably do a bit better.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 30/09/2024 20:59

I can't afford savings so I don't have any.

ChilliPB · 30/09/2024 21:01

Between me and DH probably about £3k into savings and another £2.5k into pensions. All the savings are in an easy access account as we are in the process of moving. After we’ve moved we’ll need to look at the best way of saving as our mortgage will be about what we’re currently paying in rent, so should be able to continue to save a fair bit.

CLola24 · 30/09/2024 21:01

It varies but I split whatever I have left at the end of each month into mortgage overpayment and savings. This month I paid £200 into each

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 30/09/2024 21:06

I put £200 away every month. Two separate accounts that are regular savers. Always had regular savers to tuck money away.
