Not sitting 'normally' on sofa

sunshine244 · 26/09/2024 18:22

I've had several appointments at home recently. People come in and sit on my sofa like they are supposed to - sitting upright, feet on the floor. They look totally comfortable that way.

It made me really conscious that I never sit on a sofa like that. I generally sit sideways or with my feet up. In the evening watching tv I often lie down. If I try to sit 'normally' I end up with a minimum of a knee up on the seat and it still feels far too unnatural and uncomfortable.

Aibu?
Yes - learn to sit on the sofa like a proper grownup
No - no one sits upright on sofas

Surely they are doing it, as they’re at your house in a professional capacity? At, home it’s PJs & popcorn.

Devilsmommy · 26/09/2024 18:25

I can't sit on any chair without putting my feet up. Especially dining chairs. Its so uncomfortable sitting with my legs down. So yanbu as far as I'm concerned 😊

soupfiend · 26/09/2024 18:25

Do you have good core strength?

I used to lollop on a sofa because I couldnt really hold myself up, was much more overweight then too.

However I dont like a soft sofa so if I visited and couldnt sit up straight with feet on the floor because the sofa is so soft, I would have to put cushions behind to prop me up a bit

Staunchlystarling · 26/09/2024 18:28

No one sits on their own sofa like that, you only do it at others houses, do uou not have friends, or do uou sit on their sofas the same, go in say hi and lay down?

mynameiscalypso · 26/09/2024 18:31

It's not really the same is it? I sit properly in chairs/on sofas if I'm there in a professional capacity or if it's not someone I know well and I'm in their home. I wouldn't ever sit like that at home. It's like my desk chair - in the office, I sit properly in it, at home, I sit in all sorts of shapes with my feet up or twisting to the side or whatever.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/09/2024 18:32

I always sit curled up. My parents insist I sit properly on their sofa. I find it really uncomfortable!

Tbskejue · 26/09/2024 18:34

I visit people in their homes for my work and I sit “normally” and I often have back pain after. In my home I never sit like that.

I can see the reverse of this thread

“Visitor came to my house, took her shoes off and lay on my sofa. AIBU to think she’s weird?”

HeartofGold42 · 26/09/2024 18:37

What would you have thought if these (presumably) professional people had kicked off their shoes and put their feet up on your sofa? Probably that they were behaving a little unprofessionally.

I never sit "properly" on the sofa at home, always lean up against the arm with my feet up to watch tv. Every now and again I'll shift position but my feet don't touch the floor until I get up to leave the room.

However when visiting someone, unless I know them really well (my DM for instance), I always sit "properly" because it's more polite.

I do. I always sit upright in whatever sort of chair I'm sitting in.

I have upright posture and would find sitting slumped in a chair incredibly uncomfortable. I never lie down on my sofa, whether I'm reading or watching television, I just find it uncomfortable.

NahNotHavingIt · 26/09/2024 18:42

How can people possibly vote with those options?

How you sit is up to you, and I'm sure the people visiting you probably relax at home in different ways.

I sometimes sit upright, sometimes I sit cross legged, sometimes I hang a leg over the chair and sometimes I bend my knees and curl my legs up to the side.

But if I was visiting someone's home for an appointment, I'd sit upright.

LoremIpsumCici · 26/09/2024 18:43

I can’t sit on a sofa with feet on the ground as I am too short.

Mablesyruo · 26/09/2024 18:44

Hehe, this would be an good initial screening question for adhd, the adhd kids groups I’m on often have pictures of children being unable to sit “ normally” and taking up all sort of weird and wonderful positions. But as an adult I would hope you know how to sit on someone else’s sofa.

Disturbia81 · 26/09/2024 18:51

Like others have said, I sit upright at others homes but not my own

AtomicBlondeRose · 26/09/2024 18:58

I hate sitting “properly” in any chair. Flights are torture for me as I can’t get comfy at all! I always want my feet up somehow.

MiaFeysImprobableBosom · 26/09/2024 19:04

I know I'm comfortable with a therapist when I can ask them if it's okay to sit on their sofa cross-legged (with my shoes off). Sitting "properly" is distractingly uncomfortable for me, and makes it harder for me to therapy properly Grin (I can, of course, sit in the culturally-sanctioned 90° hip/90° knee/90° ankle set-square manner when required, but as therapy is more mentally taxing for me than most activities requiring decorous and orthodox sitting, it's worth a punt to ask.)

I did very much appreciate this one therapist I saw for a while, who I came across sitting on the floor finishing her lunch when she called me in for my appointment one time, after which we conducted all our appointments cross-legged on the carpet.

MelodyMalone · 26/09/2024 19:07

Read this, checked my position and discovered I am sitting sideways on the sofa with my feet tucked up under me 😄

I doubt I ever sit on it normally tbh.

I love lying down on my sofa, though I do have an unfortunate tendency to then fall asleep. 😴

BeatsAntique · 26/09/2024 19:09

I tend to perch on the edge if I’m in someone else’s house, but I lounge if I’m in my own house.

I even perch at my Mum’s or siblings’ houses, unless I’m staying overnight, then I get comfy. I’d never thought about it before!

PosiePetal · 26/09/2024 19:10

No-one with good manners puts their feet on other people’s furniture. But fine to slop on your own sofa, I regularly do.

MelodyMalone · 26/09/2024 19:12

I used to do home visits and would of course sit nicely on other people's furniture 😄

But not at home, no no no.

😂 😂

Thisismynewusernamedoyoulikeit · 26/09/2024 19:13

I didn't vote because neither is correct. But I am just like you - can't sit up properly for more than a few minutes. It's one of the reasons I don't like the cinema. On planes, I put my knees up on the seat in front (I know, sorry!). At home, I either lie down, tuck my legs up or use a footstool.

I do think it's linked to core strength. I train more than most, but just don't develop those muscles easily

FuckThePoPo · 26/09/2024 19:13

It's just keeping up appearances

Your bestie might get away with it but if it's the district nurse or the local vicar, definitely weird 😂😂
