Tesco clothes return - jobsworth?

Essex8888 · 26/09/2024 07:22

Cant work out if this woman was being a jobsworth or I was unreasonable.

I brought a shirt from Tesco last week- packed by cashier and then I’ve left it in my car since (decided on different outfit so didn’t end up trying on) but it’s satin material that creases really easily.

Took it back to return today and the customer service lady said ‘ I don’t need to accept this, it’s creased and that’s not how we’ve sold it to you’
I sort of just looked at her as couldn’t work out if she was joking or not.

She then said ‘I’m being serious, you’re lucky I’m even going to refund it. Look at it’

So I said to her ‘okay, give it back to me. I’ll take it home, iron it and bring it back’

She then got a bit angry and said ‘Are you trying to be funny with me?’

I said ‘no I’m quite serious, if it’s a problem give it to me. I’ll iron it and then problem solved!’

is she being a complete jobsworth or not? And can they actually refuse a return on this basis?

Unless the item is faulty it has to be in a resellable condition. Was it?

Pandasnacks · 26/09/2024 07:25

She didn't refuse though? She's doing her job, and if the item isn't in good condition they don't have to allow a return, she doesn't know what you've done with it since you had it.

Topjoe19 · 26/09/2024 07:25

If it still has the label on & you have the receipt she should refund it (unless it's damaged/dirty). I'm guessing she thought you'd worn it.

redtrain123 · 26/09/2024 07:26

Generally clothes are refunded in re-sellable condition. She deemed it wasn’t the case, and perhaps assumed you had worn it as it was so creased.

DustyLee123 · 26/09/2024 07:26

I had the very same thing with an assistant in Next. Bought a skirt and left it in the bag, didn’t try it on and took it back, looked like a wrinkled rag. She commented, but did refund. I said that it shows what rubbish material it is when it’s just been folded up in a bag.

bergamotorange · 26/09/2024 07:27

She was being factual, they don't have to accept it.

You got your refund, I don't understand the issue really. If she sounded frustrated it isnt ideal but were you really harmed by this exchange? It sounds like two huffy people.

BeMintBee · 26/09/2024 07:28

She wasn’t being a jobsworth and no she didn’t have to refund you. DS was told the same when he returned a very creased to shirt to M&S. they did refund him but pointed out that it wasn’t really an acceptable way to return a non faulty item. I think that’s fair enough to be honest.

ienjoyeatingcake · 26/09/2024 07:28

I think she was being a little jobsworth about it yes, however if it's crumpled and creased how are they meant to resell it? It'll probably have to go in the sales items.

FrapGlart · 26/09/2024 07:28

You're right, she was bored and was trying to weild her tiny bit of power over you.

GreenWheat · 26/09/2024 07:31

Would you want to buy a rumpled shirt that's been stuffed in someone's car boot for a week?

ticklecrabs · 26/09/2024 07:32

Well they're not going to be able to resell it in that condition are they? You should have at least hung it up while you were deciding whether to keep it. I think YABU.

TroysMammy · 26/09/2024 07:33

In my opinion it's Tesco's fault for closing and removing the changing rooms. I can't be arsed with the faff of buying, taking home to try it on and return it if not suitable. I have no customer loyalty to one supermarket or store so I won't buy clothing from shops that I can't try them on before I buy them.

GoldenSunflowers · 26/09/2024 07:34

I’ve returned some items by post where I wonder if they’ll be accepted, they are so creased. I return them the same day I try them on, so there can be no question I damaged them somehow. I understand everyone needs to use less packaging, but sometimes it’s ridiculous. Not exactly this scenario here, but creased items annoy me. If I’ve paid £130 for a dress, that’s a lot for me and I want it to look special the moment I take it out, not after TLC.

sunbum · 26/09/2024 07:34

Inhate people like this. If you are actually going to refund it, because you know you have to, then don't issue some cringy passive aggressive commentary to make out she's doing you a favour.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 26/09/2024 07:34

According to consumer law, if you have bought an item in a shop then unless it's actually faulty, the shop do not have to refund. In other words you have absolutely no right to a refund if you just change your mind.

Supersimkin7 · 26/09/2024 07:35

They’ve got clothes steamers in the back.

She didn't have to refund it though, because it wasn't in the good condition it was sold in.

Ineffable23 · 26/09/2024 07:36

I was going to say, surely the shops have clothes steamers. Nothing stays pristine in transport.

i wish I had thought of saying this as I did ask to try it on at the time but was told changing rooms had been removed!
It was actually creased when I brought it but more creased when I returned- it’s just that horrible material.

Interesting to hear they can actually refuse to return because of creases though. Her tone and manner were crappy regardless but will note that for future purposes

According to consumer law, if you have bought an item in a shop then unless it's actually faulty, the shop do not have to refund. In other words you have absolutely no right to a refund if you just change your mind.

Depends on the individual retailers returns policy.

Tescos returns policy states:

"If you need to return your purchase or you're not happy with the quality of the product, you can return it in-store. We'll offer you a refund or exchange. Please bring your proof of purchase and if possible, return it to the same store you purchased it from."

So sounds like you can return something if you change your mind to me.

Either way, the shop assistant sounds as though she was rude, passive aggressive, and ridiculous as she did accept the return.

Teddleshon · 26/09/2024 07:45

I'm surprised to read this, a lot of the online clothing I buy arrives in a very creased state and the first thing I have to do is steam / iron it. This is often the case even with expensive designer labels.

If an item which is heavily creased is in an unsuitable state for return then how is it in a suitable state to arrive with the customer?

Open to debate...

Need , to me, suggests something is wrong with the product, by the trade description / consumer rights descriptions....

Just dont understand the mentality of buying stuff and taking it back, ive literally never returned an itrem in my whole life that wasnt either faulty. If there's no chnaging room to try clothes, i go elsewhere.

midlifeattheoasis · 26/09/2024 07:51

I think she was being a rude jobsworth. I've often returned clothes to various places and they just put them on a pile to be dealt with later, so get creased anyway

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 07:52

I think it's fair enough. Label or not I'd assume it's been worn and just had the label hidden

Presumably, if the only thing wrong with it was that it was creased.
