Tesco clothes return - jobsworth?

Cant work out if this woman was being a jobsworth or I was unreasonable.

I brought a shirt from Tesco last week- packed by cashier and then I’ve left it in my car since (decided on different outfit so didn’t end up trying on) but it’s satin material that creases really easily.

Took it back to return today and the customer service lady said ‘ I don’t need to accept this, it’s creased and that’s not how we’ve sold it to you’
I sort of just looked at her as couldn’t work out if she was joking or not.

She then said ‘I’m being serious, you’re lucky I’m even going to refund it. Look at it’

So I said to her ‘okay, give it back to me. I’ll take it home, iron it and bring it back’

She then got a bit angry and said ‘Are you trying to be funny with me?’

I said ‘no I’m quite serious, if it’s a problem give it to me. I’ll iron it and then problem solved!’

is she being a complete jobsworth or not? And can they actually refuse a return on this basis?

She was being rude, I would complain about her. I worked in retail and creased things would come back all of the time, once it’s clean and tags are on it has to be refunded. That’s the law. Only small retailers refuse returns and it will be written in the receipt when you buy.

That’s not the law at all. It’s a courtesy provided by many retailers.

They’ve got clothes steamers in the back.

I very much doubt that, there's barely enough time to hang and put clothes out let alone steam them!
I guess OP could complain about the staffs attitude but she was entirely right. Customers forget that items need to be able to be resold, it's not a loan service.

According to consumer law, if you have bought an item in a shop then unless it's actually faulty, the shop do not have to refund. In other words you have absolutely no right to a refund if you just change your mind.

If the shop or store doesn't have changing room facilities, then this is blatantly unfair. How are you supposed to know if an item of clothing will suit you, fit right or hang correctly on you if you can't try it on?
In these circumstances I think a refund should be mandatory.
That said, I wouldn't have left the item in the boot of my car to be left looking like a rumpled dishrag. I would have at least brought it inside and put it on a clothes hanger until I had time to return it.

A very creased item will not sell so I think she is right. The ability to return an item (that isn't faulty) is an optional goodwill gesture by a retailer. The economics of it are based on the goods being resold again.

She may have delivered the message rudely though which is unnecessary!

No one is going to buy something heavily creased. You were unreasonable, she was doing her job and informing you of the condition they expect things to be returned in. Kinda shitty to call someone a jobsworth for doing their job.

She didn't have to refund it though, because it wasn't in the good condition it was sold in.

Oh dear totally missed the point.

She may or may not have had to refund it, but she clearly was refunding it, so no need for the commentary!

YABU.

You've left a satin shirt scrunched up in a bag for a week and think it's still going to be in sellable condition? She was right, you were lucky they took it back.
