We know all the anti Labour posts are really just about VAT on school fees!

Day in day out whining about Labour and looking for any reason to moan about Starmer, I’m honestly expecting to see a “Starmer ate my dog” post soon! 🙄

We all know you’re just upset as you’ll be charged VAT on little Arabella’s school fees!

So my AIBU…

YABU - It is not just the school fees, honest! I preferred ‘honest Boris’ and ‘man of the people’ Rishi. Or that lovely Liz, we were so much safer with them!

YANBU - The posts are so blatantly motivated by the VAT on school fees that it has becoming utterly boring. Jog on ‘disgusted of Hampstead’ and join the local comp!

😘

As I said they tried, but failed, with Corbyn.

the operative word was in office and a winner. Corbyn was neither. Labour PMs are rare. The party never stabs them if they win an election. Whereas the Tories will kill off an election winner with some ease.

Johnson wasn't with ease. It was a total shit show campaign by a strategist and profit driven media

Another reason I couldn't care less if Starmer gets the media off side and feels it. He can enjoy it too

As for not getting rid of him, fine by me. The others are even worse.

bombastix · 25/09/2024 19:14

Yes but it probably cost the Tory Party the election in the end. Different failures. My point is Labour won’t get rid of him, they never do, and he will survive what are some pretty small beer attacks and unless there is a good opponent for him, he looks very secure.

EasternStandard · 25/09/2024 19:21

Mind you it's not that great if he really does start to fail and we're stuck with him.

Plus if everyone is exasperated, well then we'll see.

Comes down to promises around growth imo

Crikeyalmighty · 25/09/2024 19:23

@EasternStandard maybe you can show similar concern for people in private rentals, many young working families, many not so young but not at the level they get any help whatsoever and whose rents in most cases have rocketed consistently every year in recent times. As I said I think the cut off point should be upped a fair bit- however I would have got rid of it as a blanket benefit- child benefit across the board changed to means tested - so why should pensioners be exempt. I feel the same about prescriptions too- think it should be free across the board or means tested.

MillicentMama · 25/09/2024 19:28

We prepaid school fees well ahead of the election, so no issue with VAT matter. We also maxed out our annual pension contributions this year already to get ahead of the punitive budget. So in general I’m neutral towards the Labour government.

I find their hypocrisy amusing though. It gets more ridiculous every day… “my boy needed peace and quiet to study”. Seems to have forgotten many of his voters couldn’t benefit from such a thing. He gives me the ick 🤦🏼‍♀️

VeraYin · 25/09/2024 19:35

Yabu. My kids are in state schools. I find the hypocrisy of Keir outrageous. Each day a new scandal about his luxurious lifestyle needs. For many years we lived in a flat with a small table for studying, dining on etc. Yet Keir needs a fancy abode for his son studying GCSEs!! He is so far removed from the reality of life for most of us. He loves designer labels and luxuries from his wealthy friends.

He has no morals as far as I'm concerned.

If the cut off point was upped I'm sure many wouldn't mind. But for those on a basic state pension it will be hard, no matter if people know someone in their own family who is different

As for rents even though I am not a pensioner nor a renter I feel for both impacted negatively by Laobur's policies. There's a thread on here about he renters' reform bill and it will make rents even higher and people will find it hard to find anywhere in a decreasing market

Same. It’s going to be hilarious when the penny drops

I think a fair few now are about winter fuel and taking ‘gifts’

This. Thats even before the budget!

feellikeanalien · 25/09/2024 20:23

It is a bit early to come to a conclusion yet but the impression I am getting is that they very much do not think of the law of unintended consequences e.g with SEN kids and VAT on school fees, pensioners just over the Pension Credit limit and the WFA, legally accepting donations but not thinking of how it will play out with the public.

Whether this simply indicates a lack of experience in government or an inability to consider all the possible outcomes of any policies or actions I am not yet sure. I am hoping for the country's sake it is the former rather than the latter.

It appears his luxury lifestyle needs may extend further than first thought. Yet more questions raised about Starmer's behaviour.....

Well I am paying school fees and am not happy about VAT on them BUT I am also not criticising Starmer or labour
So how does that fit your theory?

Did not you just said in another post that no way you would be paid for private school?

dottiehens · 25/09/2024 21:39

Nice try to come on the defence of the new laughing stock of the U.K. About the VAT there is a case in court to challenge it on human rights it is so embarrassing for KS. Isn’t he a human rights advocate?

I have the feeling it is not just about VAT on private schools. People have given you more reasons. I would add that releasing thousands of prisoners early it is one that I am very concerned about. More problems on the streets, more homeless, potentially criminals roaming the streets in large numbers. Just what we need really.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/09/2024 21:41

@VeraYin did you have the press hovering around your personal home constantly or trying to take pictures of your family?

Evilartsgrad · 25/09/2024 21:46

There are some disgruntled Labour voters who didn't listen to the campaign and imagined a socialist paradise, as well as the usual Tory suspects. Not all of whom have children at private school.

It is not a bloody human right to have an expensive education. FGS could you be any more thick skinned and oblivious?
Beyond offensive in view of real human rights challenges worldwide...

Politicians do events, photo ops and get loads of press that way. What even is this new thing about needing to take a pic of a politician leaving their front door. I haven't even seen any of that

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 25/09/2024 21:52

Looks like it's time to look into going to the press where Mumsnet and its transphobic tendancies are concerned.

As predicted, and not for the first time, my reply gets deleted (defending trans people) yet the thinly veiled trans dig that I reported still stands.
I have lots of screenshots as evidence of this over the past god knows how many months, and I'm done.

Seems hate speech is just fine on here as long as trans people are on the receiving end.

Yup. But they'll dress it up as " concern" for women's rights.
Sadly the press are if anything worse.😑

Pissingintothewind · 25/09/2024 22:15

When the tories came in and removed child benefit from single income earners on 50k and kept it for joint income earners on 98k in 2010 no one gave a shit. The tories were grossly unfair and have been behaving appallingly for 14 years. I'm glad they're gone. I'm not a Labour voter but they're better than what we had before. It's high time we had a government that doesn't tax income. There are plenty of people who work bloody hard who will never have the money some people have. I know people who can afford to pay tuition fees for their kids at uni and people with multiple properties. I'm sick of the tories and their income tax grabs, which is a tax on productivity. I've got no skin in the game anymore. My kids are all practically adults but they'll never inherit much. They don't deserve to be penalised because they weren't born in to wealth. I will likely lose pension tax relief under this government but I'd still rather that than the skanky, vile con artists we had before. I say this as someone who did vote tory many years ago. Never again though.

SoupDragon · 25/09/2024 22:50

No sign of the OP...?

TempestTost · 25/09/2024 23:38

That's a weird conclusion, OP, I am sure people have all kinds of different reasons for not being happy with Labour.

jcyclops · 26/09/2024 00:02

On 19th July Starmer had an approval rating of +19%. On 20th September this had fallen to -26% - a massive fall of 45% and he now has a worse approval rating than Sunak. At this time, the best anybody can say about Starmer is that he still appears to be better than Johnson and that lettuce woman, but being the third worst PM this century is a huge disappointment.

57% of people think the new Labour government has not been a success. Even 32% of people who voted Labour think the government has not been a success.

Nobody is under investigation for excessive expenses claims @Ijustdontcare , that’s just nonsense. People have got worked up because Labour have done something perfectly within the rules (even though I wish they hadn’t).
They can’t stop building hospitals that were fictional in the first place. There were no plans.

What irks me about the whole "accepting donations" thing is that Keir Starmer was all over Carrie Johnson's wallpaper being paid for by a donor (also within the rules), so you'd expect him to be a little more careful what gifts he accepted. It's not a good look.
