The Irony.. PM's donation was for ‘son to study for GCSEs’

PM suggests £20,000 donation was for ‘son to study for GCSEs’ | The Independent

Sorry if there are other threads, but I did search and nothing came up.

“My boy, 16, was in the middle of his GCSEs. I made him a promise, a promise that he would be able to get to his school, do his exams, without being disturbed,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“But if you’re a 16-year-old trying to do your GCSEs and it’s your one chance in life – I promised him we would move somewhere, get out of the house and go somewhere where he could be peacefully studying.

So its OK for the PM to be worried about his child's "one chance" GCSE year being disturbed ...but he's not so worried about other people's children feeling stressed during their GCSEs by introducing the private school VAT during an academic school year.

I don't have a child in private school doing their GCSEs. And I know that there are lots of people who support the VAT and those who don't.

But I think there is a midline where lots of people on both sides of the fence agree making this change during an academic year is not fair on the kids in key exam years...and I am one of them because not all parents have a Lord Alli to step in to ensure their child's "one chance" GCSE year is not being disturbed.

For Voting:

Unreasonable - I am with Keir and I am not really bothered with other people's children's "one chance" school year being interrupted.

Not Unreasonable - I agree Labour should not interrupt the academic school year and introduce the VAT in September 2025.

The Prime Minister signalled he could continue to accept hospitality gifts from donors.

And that's your sole contribution to this thread?
You have nothing to add about the apparent double standards of criticising people and then doing the same yourself?
It must be very disappointing when your hero turns out not to be a hero at all, but hey, at least you can still have a pop at 'middle-class whingeing' eh?

joolsella · 26/09/2024 19:46

Yes. Im sick of it

It's 20%

Get a loan and remove your kid next year

It's private school!!!!! It's a lucury

JohnTheRevelator · 26/09/2024 19:49

I've heard it all now.

joolsella · 26/09/2024 19:51

Personally, i care more about kids living in poverty struggling to do their GCSEs

The money must come from somewhere

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods

Is this everything you know? funny you post on different threads the same response

Are you ok?

joolsella · 26/09/2024 19:57

It's just that every day, there's a new thread on private school fees

It's done now. Accept it

Fatbottomgardener · 26/09/2024 20:00

It has not been a great start.

We have gone from Boris wallpaper to the cost of Kier’s glasses. Labour can’t spend years throwing stones and then claim there’s nothing to see here when the Labour top team are feasting. Why does Angela Raynor have her own photographer at £68 k? Surely that would fund a teacher?

Maybe politicians should pay tax on gifts? Kier should pay 20% on the accommodation for his son’s revision, bit like 20% on school fees

nearlylovemyusername · 26/09/2024 20:01

This thread is not about private school fees

And... just as a thought, nobody's forcing you to join any thread.

joolsella · 26/09/2024 20:03

So your kid is about to enter year 11 and you don't want to move them to state school foe their GCSEs and you're already paying £25k a year in fees

Really? You cant find the extra five grand?

Nobody believes this

Have you actually read the thread? You complain you are sick of reading threads about VAT on school fees, yet here you are derailing a thread about double standards to talk about VAT on school fees!

cosietea · 26/09/2024 20:10

Why would children feel stressed about the VAT introduction? Surely that's for the parents to own and deal with

joolsella · 26/09/2024 20:13

I don't think there's a double standard here at all

I think you're all scraping the barrel looking for an issue that isn't there because you're miffed about the additional bit of extra expense

I'd say loads of people did, I mean look on here pre GE

Exactly, every single day around the GE it was constant gleeful comments of 'I'm so relieved to have grown ups running the country again.'
Pretty galling to have to listen to for those of us who were fairly sure it would simply be the changing of the guard in terms of the old, bloated snouts in the trough being swapped for new snouts, with fresh and eager appetites.

Ah the old adage, all children are equal, some are more equal than others..

Hes a self entitled that and he could have arranged for his family to stay with friends/relatives for free, if his family income didn't stretch to an AIRBNB.

Entitled two-faced twats. Never though I'd say it but Boris is starting to look quite honest in comparison.

He was staying there for free. No money was given at all. Because he declared it, an equivalent monetary value was placed on it. No one gave or received £20k. I wish people woukd look into things properly before commenting.

joolsella · 26/09/2024 20:20

He didn't accept a £20k donation

He has declared the use of a flat

Nowt to do with rich people having to swap schools because they can't scrape a few grand on a credit card

DinosaurMunch · 26/09/2024 20:22

Labour voter here and disagree with the existence of private schools.
I think the Vat should have applied from next September and initially only at year 9 and under, going up to the later years in time.
I also think politicians should not be allowed to accept any gifts. I work in a university, we can't accept gifts of over £50. Below £50 we have to declare unless it's a token box of heroes or similar. This is because of bribery. Surely it matters far more if politicians get bribed. It should be the same rule for everyone

Try not to be so literal in your interpretations . There is no such thing as a free lunch.

So free use of a flat wi come at a price further down the line.... wonder what that favour will be.

Oh yes, the celebrations of the new Messiah the day after the election. I especially remember one eager poster posting picture after picture of Starmer at that conference with her own spin on every one, but the basic interpretation was that the whole of Europe was falling at Starmer's feet and were glad the 'grown-ups were in charge.
It was a bit weird tbh, but amusing at the same time

Would all those parents carping about being happy with the VAT on education, be happy to increase their taxes to improve all state schools. No. Thought not.

But don’t you get that parents that pay for private education still pay for state education. So if they leave private education to join state schools, there isn’t going to be any more money, just more over crowding. IMO the whole vat thing is mad.

Exactly. It's nonsense (and I say that as a parent with children at private school)

Garlictest · 26/09/2024 21:10

I'm failing to see the equivalence between a kid who's being stalked by paparazzi, having to barge through a mob of yelling adults every time he goes in or out of the family home, and another kid of the same age who goes about his day in peace but whose parents are upset about paying tax.

GripeOfTheDay · 26/09/2024 21:19

maddening · 26/09/2024 19:23

And Keir wasn't backward in coming forward to criticise him - if.you set yourself up as virtuous and full of integrity- whilst questioning the integrity of others - then you fucking pay for your own clothes, any other material goods and your own child's schooling - and to have done this whilst taking from people on the basis that they have some sort of level of perceived privilege (through increased taxes and removed benefits) - then he is no better than Boris.

Love this.

Well said...

Why on earth is the kid being 'stalked'?

Is Starmer not turning up to press events to actually talk to invited journalists or does he hide away at home and only get door stopped

The dates don't even match up. Why people are buying this rubbish
