Do Europeans hate the Brits?

1000 replies

Floofydawg · 24/09/2024 15:31

We're in Spain at the minute and have encountered some pretty hostile behaviour. Not so much from the Spanish, as we speak the language, but from other Europeans. We've been coming here many years and I've never before encountered such hostility. It got me thinking, do many Europeans dislike the Brits?

OP posts:

Walrusdress · 24/09/2024 16:32

I think it's like how people hate on Americans but Americans don't really care about elsewhere 😂
I'm not saying no Brits care about elsewhere but generally if they're being honest, they don't really.
And yes I expect backlash for this comment but in my experience it's true.
So don't let it bother you, it doesn't really matter.

Which countries care about which countries then?

AbbeyGrange · 24/09/2024 17:46

Pearlgemspark · 24/09/2024 15:59

I don't understand why some people hate England for colonising and invading countries in the past, but they don't hate all the other countries in Europe who have colonised and invaded countries. England weren't the only one to do it.

Spain for example invaded and colonised lots of countries in the past.

The Dutch did a fair bit too..

BlastedPimples · 24/09/2024 17:48

How do you know other countries aren't hated for colonising other countries?

The Belgians were vile too. Brutal.

MidCenturySuffolk · 24/09/2024 17:49

nongnangning · 24/09/2024 17:44

It might be an aversion to colonialism or a reaction to lager louts but I think it's more related to Brexit, myself. If Europe was a boyfriend, we dumped them. We said 'thanks, but we don't want to be in a club with you European people, we're not going to pay into the pot and we don't want your rules (and values)'. Whatever people understand about the detail of politics, they understand this, (even if just less than half of us voted to remain)

But this is a misunderstanding not an understanding at all…Britain didn’t leave Europe. Britain is still European. As are several other countries that are nothing to do with the EU.

That was a nasty post.
How is that relevant to what the OP asked?
She said "do many Europeans dislike the British".
And you said, "well they treat me well because I'm Irish."

She answered the question she can't help how you feel.

highlandcoo · 24/09/2024 17:31

There's a lot of deliberate misunderstanding going on here.

I spend a fair bit of time in French Catalonia and it's true that local people are friendlier once they realise you're Scottish. They know, not because they recognise the accent; it's because they tend to ask in a restaurant "anglaise?" and I say "écossaise" ... because I am. I don't walk in waving a saltire 😁

There is a subtle difference in the warmth of their response. That's not "crowing"; it's just a fact.

It's wrong to say that people here don't know the difference between England and Scotland. Because of their own independence debate they are very well informed.

As for sticking up for English people? If I got into a conversation and it was relevant, I would absolutely say I have some lovely English friends. I wouldn't defend English football hooligans or the awful behaviour of some Brits abroad in Spanish holiday resorts etc. But usually the comments don't go further than them saying how much they love Scotland for the mountains, the lochs .. and most of all the whisky!

It’s true there are loads of awful British tourists, especially young, drunk British tourists. But I read and article a few years ago reporting on the rising number of young Irish tourists frequenting Magaluf etc and being no different to English arseholes. It was centred around a teenaged Irish girl who was shagging as many guys as possible/ offering them blow jobs so she could win a foreign holiday - at the end of the night the reps and audience thought it was hilarious when she was handed a cocktail called - a ‘foreign holiday’. Take from that what you want.

The French also had a huge empire, mostly in Africa. They're very nostalgic about it and indeed still have a quasi imperial presence in parts of the continent.

Anyway, why would a hotel receptionist or bar owner in Spain or Greece hate the English (but presumably not the Welsh or Scottish?) on the basis of an empire which ended decades ago and didn't affect them? Especially as Spain, and many other European countries, had its own empire.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 24/09/2024 17:51

Yes, anti English sentiment definitely exists.

Me too, Cherry. Pearlgemspark is having a bit of a comprehension struggle with this.

In my case I hang off my husband's Irish coat-tails. It goes down a treat in places like Corsica where they also have a fiercely independant island we-don't-belong-to-France-and-we're-nothing-like-them mentality. In fact many Corsicans feel they are still living under French colonisation.

People are looking to connect and identify. They also look out for perceived slights, historical or recent. In the case of UK there's the problem of our leaving the EU - it feels to many Europeans that despite having our own special deal we still decided to play away.

If you can claim Irish, Scottish or Welsh roots they let you off, I confirm! That may also be to do with the breakdown of the Brexit votes, as many people realise that Scotland, Wales - and possibly NI - voted heavily to remain.

Er no Wales voted to leave. London which is English and has a bigger population than Wales voted to remain!

NotSayingImBatman · 24/09/2024 17:53

We got absolutely outstanding service at a perfume shop in Spain over the summer. Really above and beyond, lots of personal recommendations for DS who’s a bit of a fragrance buff thanks to TikTok.

Turns out, with our Northumbrian accents, she thought we were Norwegian. We didn’t disabuse her of the notion 😂

Whammyammy · 24/09/2024 17:54

Have travelled most of the world and my husband a lot more. We don't witness anti English/Brit behaviour, except to the ones thar behave awfully and are obnoxious drunks.

Applesonthelawn · 24/09/2024 17:54

We are an English/German/Danish family who have lived/raised kids in all three countries. There is a huge amount of anti-British bias in news reporting - quite naturally the state broadcaster loves to portray the Brits as losers in order to big themselves up. Basic political manoeuvring commonplace in lots of countries. Constant source of amusement to us.

I don’t think we are ashamed of our colonial past, collectively, which understandably causes issues. For example people are still happy to belt this out with pride

"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves

LivelyBlake · 24/09/2024 17:56

I’m sorry that you have encountered so many rude people from Europe while travelling in Spain, OP.

When's the last time you've heard that song being 'belted out'?

And have you ever heard the lyrics of the French national anthem? Regularly belted out at football stadia and the like.

Also, edited to add that the lyrics of 'Rule Brittania' were written not by a 'colonial' English man, but by one of those Scotsmen who everyone supposedly loves to cuddle.

Dsmama24 · 24/09/2024 17:57

Having worked for a very large, ‘multicultural’ airline in the past, I found many of them to dislike the British. It was common knowledge that many would try and swap off UK flights as they ‘didn’t like the passenger profile’. Was good for me as I was homesick so could easily swap onto flights back home 😅
I also have a European ex who didn’t hide his dislike for Brits.

I'm an English person who lived in Germany for many years, and my experience was that a lot of Germans are Anglophiles rather than Anglophobes. In 20+ years I never experienced the slightest hostility from anyone because of my nationality. Entirely the opposite.

I'm fascinated by all these people on the continent who apparently know the difference between England, Scotland and Wales and treat people differently because of it. In my long experience of living in Germany, most people treated England and Britain as though they were the same entities. Of course they'd heard of Scotland and Wales and knew they existed, but I'm not sure if most people realised that they were separate countries with a separate history from England. Listening to German commentators during a football match when the England team were playing, for example, they often switched between talking about 'the English team' and 'the British team' without any apparent awareness of any difference.

And the idea that most non-native English speakers, unless they've spent lots of time in English-speaking countries and are almost native speaker fluent, would be able to identify the difference between accents is laughable. As though your average continental European would have the faintest clue whether some random person they encounter is English or Welsh or Scottish or Irish, or indeed Scandinavian or Dutch or any other nationality in the world who can speak good English. Yeah right.

That's my experience too.

I have witnessed very little difference in my travels in how I (Irish) and English are treated in Europe. My accent (very like Nadine Coyle) has not led to me gettting treated any differently to someone with a Cockney accent.

The OP mentioned Spain, but Spain is a unique case right now with what is going on there in regard to the hostility to tourists (haven't looked in to their reasons).

midgetastic · 24/09/2024 17:58

I think the French national anthem might be worse

Let us march that their impure blood should water our fields

According to classic fm translation

pleasehelpwi3 · 24/09/2024 17:59

I can order food and converse in Spanish, German, French and Romanian (just) and am happy to try Portuguese and Italian, which helps for sure, as well as responding to people in whatever language they prefer (theirs or English). Speaking in English loudly- never a good idea.

FernGullyLunchbox1994 · 24/09/2024 18:01

I think we get better treatment (my kids and I) as we are very dark haired, dark eyes, olive skin. People don't know where we are from until we open our mouths and then I try to speak the language of the country I'm in. Unless it's really difficult Wink
Also just try to speak the local language. Just try!

Same for Scotland I am afraid. Europeans do tend to have a view around the English but the Scot’s are pretty much welcomed with open arms…… I know that sucks for the vast majority of English people who are perfectly nice but the reputation of the minority precedes you!

0b11110110110 · 24/09/2024 18:03

I don’t believe the British are as disliked abroad as many on MN would desperately like to believe. Either that or I must be blessed because I’ve never had any hostility or even rudeness in any of the many countries I have visited. Europe or further afield.

A couple of years ago I got invited to a dinner hosted by restaurant and accommodation owners in Cyprus. I asked them which nationality of tourist they liked the most. They all agreed that it was the British. Why? Because they spend the most money and are the least trouble.

Alectoishome · 24/09/2024 18:04

Pearlgemspark · 24/09/2024 16:58

I don't have a comprehension struggle with this.

I agreed that Irish people are not hated anywhere as they are a non threatening small country and have not invaded anywhere in the past.

I pointed out that in the scenario where one country is hated more than another, it might be good to stand up for the hated country.

But you guys don't do that

Ah yes, cuddly, sweet, non-threatening Ireland.
Guess it slipped your mind that the majority of Jamaican's have a high percentage of Irish Ancestry due to Irish plantation owners and charge hands raping every slave they could lay their hands on.
They didn't waste any time getting themselves a nice fat slice of the pie in Australia either.
Pretty sure they've spread themselves around the earth more than any other nation.
Ah tis a proud history altogether.

I have Irish ancestry, I just don't buy into the BS.
