Inspired by a recent thread, in which I read multiple posters saying you shouldn't wear mascara on your bottom lashes (which I have been doing for the last 30 years 😂) what has Mumsnet told or taught you you've been doing wrong?

The irritating thing is then I made one eye up as usual and made one up without mascara on the bottom lashes and DH preferred the without eye! Don't even get me started on my inability to make a chicken last a week...

Of course they do.

Fair enough. I’ve heard plenty of people say ‘haitch’, of course. But never in ‘NHS’ 🤷‍♀️

I do that, otherwise it just rinses the stuff away before it does anything.
It also means I only use about half the water.

Or you just lower the shower to below head height..

BirthdayRainbow · 30/09/2024 18:25

You're making fun of people you chat with, while exaggerating the odd unusual for you comment. Can't help wondering why you have so much disdain you're still here.

PedantScorner · 30/09/2024 18:35

@BirthdayRainbow , I hold it in my hand, so I can target different body parts.Smile

Here in Australia, back when I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, the clear divide on AITCH or HAITCH was whether you were educated in the Catholic parish school system (nearly all 'aitch' sayers) or the public/state schools (very much users of 'haitch' ... except for the many public schools in charge of teaching gifted and talented children and youths).

Catholics over 45yo and the very brightest ex-public students say AITCH as though it's doctrine. I still say AITCH myself but I became more tolerant of HAITCH infidels about 20 years ago when I found that some of them were more interesting in other ways! :-) :-) :-)

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 01/10/2024 05:44

This intolerance for regional accents is disturbing. Such small minds on display here.

FatOaf · 01/10/2024 06:07

I'm not washing anything enough. Apparently I should have six showers a day where I scrub every inch of myself raw. Also should be washing bedding/towels etc hourly.

Nobody - not even Jeremy Clarkson - hates the environment as much as Mumsnetters do.

Have we got onto the view yet that it's "common" to hang your washing out to dry instead of using an electricity-guzzling tumble dryer? Honestly, anyone who describes someone else (or their actions) as "common" is just demonstrating their own objectionableness.

rainfallpurevividcat · 01/10/2024 06:10

Incessant rain every day this week - not so much common as stupid to put clothes outside. I use the "outdoor tumble drier" when it's available.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2024 06:47

Never been able to do a bra up at the back and also get in a muddle with and bikini tops which tend to have clips rather than hooks. Have to do 'the swivel '.
Not sure it matters and nobody has ever noticed that I do it 'wrong !'

rainfallpurevividcat · 01/10/2024 06:49

Oh yes, I cannot do up bikinis at the back. I have to fasten the back and put the top over my head.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2024 07:07

Yep, I've often had to do up the bikini top first and pop over the head.
( the days of wearing the actual bottoms disappeared many many years ago though unless they are the shorts style )

I have lied to ds and quite fine with this

the park is closed, the park is closing soon, they have stopped making a certain toy, Father Christmas is coming tonight but only if you are asleep, I don’t know where the Nemo dvd is let’s have a look oh look I have found Kung Fu Panda isn’t that great

CagneyAndLazy · 30/09/2024 17:13

Yes, this is a really odd one to me, too, but apparently not to a lot of MN.

I didn't know you were supposed to completely ignore any knock at the door unless you were specifically expecting someone.

…and they’d had to book an appointment.

To be fair no one says ‘En-Haitch-Ess’… do they?!

Yes...listen to the messages on some doctors voicemails

That's because your (previously held?) opinion is factually wrong. Confused

Of course they do, what the hell else would you say.

I can't believe the people lazy enough to drop a letter are arguing they are the right ones. Its like trying to argue the t' is the correct way to say 'to'... its not its an regional accent that drops a letter.

Dropping the H in the actual letter H is utterly weird though, basic common sense says its wrong.

I don't think I have ever heard anyone call it the en haitch ess either.

Haitch is regional. Aitch isn't incorrect or lazy. It is also regional (and correct IMO). You never hear TV news readers calling it the en haitch ess, for example.

PedantScorner · 02/10/2024 08:39

@housethatbuiltme , Hmm. The name of the letter is aitch.
NHS is en-aitch-ess. In National Health Service, the H is sounded. It's not laziness, it's enunciating clearly according to standard British English.

I'm in Ireland and newsreaders do say En-haitch-ess here. It doesn't come up too often as our equivalent is the HSE (also with a haitch) 😊

I totally agree that both are standard in various places though. It's fine to say aitch; in fact it's the standard in many places, though not everywhere as some think. Saying aitch is not dropping a h like pp suggested. Words like honour are also pronounced without a h...people aren't dropping the letter incorrectly in those cases either!

BananaSplitSandwich · 02/10/2024 08:45

Previously, I used my medium chicken to make a roast for myself and DH, a couple of sandwiches and some stock. I’ve since learnt that I can use my small chicken to make three roasts for 5 people, sandwiches for 3 days for work, soup and stock! It’s the magic chicken and shame on me for being so wasteful 🙄 😜 🐔

Aitch isn't really dropping the H (any more) and it isn't wrong either.

Both are correct. That concept will never cease to confound a vocal minority on MN it seems.

That's fine. Confused Just don't teach them that haitch is wrong, because it isn't. Both are right.

PedantScorner · 02/10/2024 09:50

@BarbaraHoward , @Katemax82 probably does not need your advice on how to parent her children.
