Anybody hate showering when on their period?

Honestly I despise it. Mostly just because it feels overstimulating.

I have very painful periods so tend to be a hermit whilst on them. Tbh as I wfh I tend not to shower for 3/4 days if I can. If I go out or have people over obviously I will shower. I still change clothes, underwear etc.

I know it’s not the most hygienic thing but weirdly most of the time people would describe me as Monica due to my obsession with cleanliness. Just goes out the window when on my period. Not sure why

Am I the only one like this?

No. I tend to actually shower more, so I don't feel gross and stinky. But I do bleed like a stuffed pig and leak everywhere, so I feel its kind of a must.

I’ve tried several different meds for my painful periods. Nothing has come close to working. I’m just a heavy flower. But my periods only last 3 days. Swings and roundabouts

Have you tried continuous combined pill, no breaks, or if you can't take oestrogen desogestrel pill in usual or double dose?

(Not individual medical advice if the GMC are watching!)

tigger1001 · 23/09/2024 22:27

"Never heard of this other than unhygienic people who can't be arsed."

Its regular medical advice for people with bad eczema and similar conditions. Showering or bathing too often strips the oils from the skin making these conditions worse.

Unless of course you think doctors etc are just giving out lazy advice.

ShortWide · 23/09/2024 21:29

@pinksheetss what is free bleeding?

Just wear period pants and no pads/tampons
I don't have particularly heavy periods so this feels best way for me

Yes but I also know that a lot of women who could have their periods sorted never seek help.

YES because if they phone their GP they get told to call at 8am the next day. And then the same on repeat.

If it was easy to seek help and women were taken seriously, they'd seek help.

It isn't, and they aren't, so they don't.

I know there are issues.

But I also regularly see women for whom it never occurred to them to ask for help with their periods, I pick it up when seeing them for something else.

GinnyPiggie · 24/09/2024 12:19

Oof! I assume you don't live with anyone. Blood smells quite strong of... blood. You will be very whiffy!

I'm also in the twice-a-day washing camp. Bleed very heavily and a lot of pain. Hot hot baths feel nice to me though.

offyoujollywelltrot · 24/09/2024 12:21

The thought of not showering during my period, is revolting.

Dreamskies · 24/09/2024 12:22

I can’t say it’s much different to any other shower for me. Other than it’s SO annoying when I get a bit on the towel when getting dried off 🙄

I have painful periods too, and I discovered the best thing for me to do is swim. I found out by accident really, just happening to be in the pool with period pains, then once I’d been swimming for a while it had gone completely. Being a hermit is likely not helping your pains 😢

I’m the opposite showering twice a day sometimes. Even told dd that she must shower daily when on her period for hygiene reasons

this is so toxic

hangingonfordearlife1 · 25/09/2024 09:48

do people realise they can actually wash themselves without going in the shower?

Lovelysummerdays · 25/09/2024 09:53

I’m the opposite, I always feel sweaty almost greasy during my period. I just want to scrub it all away. If I’m at home I’ll pour some warm water over my bits at every pad change too.

This is why I won’t use pads, I feel so constantly dirty and sticky. Cup all the way, it’s like you’re not even on (except the pain 🤣)

SeptemberSunglasses · 25/09/2024 20:48

I do find it much easier to have a bath sometimes if I'm having a heavy period and the hot water is good for cramps, so will sometimes have a bath for pain relief.

I couldn't go three or four days without showering, even not moving much I think I would smell and my scalp would be itchy.

cuckooooooo · 25/09/2024 20:49

I don't like showering on my period as it's quite slimy washing down below but I couldn't go 3-4 days. You need it even more when on your period

Period or not a shower every day is basic self care x

wow wait till you find out what happens when you’re depressed. i showered once every 2 months

OctopusFriend · 05/01/2025 11:12

If you wfh it's your choice. I'm sorry to hear they're so bad, though. So many women are debilitated by them, it's awful.

neversawheragain · 05/01/2025 11:13

i never used to shower on my period because 1, i was scared the blood would get everywhere2, i hate showers, and 3, i was so depressed i couldn’t manage showers very often anyway. but now i have raging OCD and i’m paranoid that i’ll get some infection from not washing enough so i try and do it at least once every two days while bleeding. and obviously wet wipes and a bit of soap are useful in between times. i know this is an old post now but i just felt bad for you because people were being rude and it was not at all warranted. shower as much or as little as you like! people in the old fashioned days didn’t shower every day (on their period or in general) and they were just fine (if a bit smelly. which is no crime if you’re not leaving the house)

I’m actually on antidepressants. Before that I forced myself into the shower because it made me feel slightly better. HTH

Curtainqueen · 05/01/2025 12:16

I have to say it's probably the one time I'd want to shower more.

YouMeandBrie · 05/01/2025 12:19

Can you have a bath instead? I hate being on my period, bathing, getting ready and feeling all clean and nice and then a few hours later feeling dirty again.

well kudos then, because i could never force myself into anything. and yeah, it does help. you’re not wrong.

(also i think i might have quoted the wrong person? i meant to direct my reply/quote (whatever it’s called on here) to the person who was going off about how “vile” OP’s habits were. think yours must have gotten caught up, so i apologise if i came off as abrasive. i’m new to this website and my reply was not intended for you. i just objected to the somebody being termed “vile” for having difficulties and reaching out)

hope your depression is responding to the meds. never an easy thing to deal with, all my best to you

LoafofSellotape · 05/01/2025 12:27

Nothing wrong with a sink wash OP.

Thank you. Yes so much better. Honestly it was so bad (and this might sound bizarre) I could shampoo my hair and rinse it but the thought of then using a conditioner was a step too far so I bought a 2-in 1 shampoo and conditioner. The citalopram I’m on has been a life-saver xx

Have a nice bath it'll help with the pains
