To think of missing work due to scan results?

MelMar1 · 22/09/2024 18:17

Having lots of gallbladder problems recently. Got my scan results today, Sunday which I didn’t expect.
so now need to go back to GP with them. Scan showed two small polyps, but it threw me as I didn’t expect that. I thought maybe stones. I have symptoms like pain, bowel changes etc. AIBU to make an appointment in the morning during work hours? I was really upset earlier even though it may be nothing. Would you get the appointment, or go to work with it on your mind?

Getting an appointment tomorrow would be urgent for me, this doesn't feel urgent, something that requires emergency treatment. I'd ring the GP and get an appointment but not take time off, saying that if I don't work I don't get paid. I wouldn't choose to lose money to get this appointment.

roseymoira · 22/09/2024 18:21

I would just make the appointment as soon as they can book you in

Allow the gp to triage the urgency of an appointment request, it isn't for you to decide.

WinterisComing95 · 22/09/2024 18:23

I wouldn’t miss work for this no, I understand that you’re upset but it doesn’t seem like an urgent situation. Bowel issues and pain are very common with gallbladder issues, as someone who suffers from gallbladder issues myself.

llamali · 22/09/2024 18:23

I don't see any harm phoning tomorrow and asking to make an appointment

Underlig · 22/09/2024 18:24

just book an appointment. I don’t think it counts as an emergency or urgent one. But is it not likely that your GP will review the scan results and tell you what to do next? Mine would send a text to say it’s normal or to please book an appointment. Give them a chance. They won’t have looked at them yet.

Catza · 22/09/2024 18:26

Call to make an appointment tomorrow but don’t take a day off for it. It’s not an urgent issue and they should offer you a routine appointment at some point over the next few weeks. I messaged my GP about scans at the beginning of the month, they texted me back online link to book and the nearest appointment was two weeks away which was perfectly fine as it was not in any way urgent.

As the results came in, the GP would have called them in for urgent appointment if it warranted it, they would have been on the phone inviting for an appintment the next working day, or asvising next course of treatment etc. They get the results as well. This is what happened with my mums xray results recently, the GP rang and said prescription at the pharmacy and referred for further investigation.

OP May have had private scans…..as nhs scans don’t usually arrive Ona Sunday? ….my DD had a private scan….she phoned the next day got a gp appointment in, took her scan results in and gp went thru them with her…..gp asked her to email a copy so they could be added to her records

Cobblersorchard · 22/09/2024 18:31

To get a Monday morning appointment it would be an absolute miracle here.

It entirely depends on your job surely? I wouldn’t have to take a day off for it, I’d WFH and just pop out for an appointment.

All my appointments are in work time unless I can opt for a Monday (NWD), but I get paid time off so not bothered. My office days are long commutes so I just switch to WFH for appointments.

I’d call tomorrow but only if that wouldn’t mean losing any money.

StormingNorman · 22/09/2024 18:35

I would phone early and see when they could fit me in. I wouldn’t take time off work to sit at home dwelling on scan results.

AzureSheep · 22/09/2024 18:36

Call Gp in the morning. Take whatever appointment they will give you, they’ll know whether it’s urgent or can wait a while. If you’re able to message work beforehand you could say you’ll be late in because you need to arrange an appointment, and will possibly need time off for it.

Hope you’re ok 💐

Ihatethegrufflalo · 22/09/2024 18:38

How did you get the results? Via NHS App? If so wait for your GP to call you, which they will if it's abnormal

MelMar1 · 22/09/2024 18:40

To all saying GP has the result- they’ve no idea. I self-referred for the scan- now I take results to my GP.

In that case ring tomorrow for an appointment, but I'd not take off work,

Lazzylegs · 22/09/2024 20:01

No I wouldn't take time off work. I have a polyp too and it's just sat there for years. I dont think it's anything for an urgent appointment.

If the op calls her practice they can arrange an appointment as they see fit - whatever your mum's surgery does is irrelevant, my GP operates differently and I am sure that the ops surgery can establish an appropriate appointment time with the op.

OoodlesofNoodles · 22/09/2024 21:52

So you have paid for a private scan and want your NHS GP to see you on the day you call to discuss the results....?

Doggymummar · 22/09/2024 21:53

Polyps aren't generally an emergency unless you are sick with it I would just make an appointment for as soon as you can

Go asap and take time off work if necessary, nothing is more important than health.

welshweasel · 22/09/2024 21:56

Gallbladder polyps are very common and don't usually require treatment unless large (over a cm) or rapidly growing. If small then they may need nothing at all doing, or you may get a scan in 6 months to check no growth.

You can book a routine GP appointment and then expect to be referred to surgery.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 22/09/2024 21:58

Was the scan done privately then? I didn't know you could do that and then get the NHS to follow up!

If it was urgent surely the private healthcare company would contact you to say? I would just make an appointment as soon as you can.

Sapphire387 · 22/09/2024 22:01

Ummm... I would phone your GP tomorrow, say what's happened, and see what they suggest in terms of appointments. They might be able to offer a phone call instead as this seems the type of thing that wouldn't necessarily need a face to face.

FuzzyYellowChicken · 22/09/2024 22:06

Gallbladder polyps are very common and nothing to be concerned about. They’ll only act on them if they grow to 10mm or more. They very very rarely do. Depending on where you live they might arrange for them checking yearly. If they’re very small they might do nothing at all.
Your GP will not treat this with any urgency. There will be millions of people who have them and are blissfully unaware.
i honestly would not worry…
