Pizza hut prices

On Saturday, I took my nephew to Pizza Hut. I thought it would just be a quick cheap lunch on the way to the cinema but it was soooo blinkin expensive. I couldn't believe it. If you go for the buffet I suppose it isn't too bad but he's a bit funny with food so I had to get him things from the main menu. Turns out a 9 inch pizza would be £18.99, then a drink too. That's nuts! You can get a meal deal and drink thing which is pizza, starter and drinks but that was £20. Twenty quid!!!! When did it become crazy expensive?

I was wondering this too OP. As a teenager in the 90’s it was great value but I suppose other than Pizza Express there wasn’t much competition. I had a craving for the Pizza Hut salad bar the other day & couldn’t believe the prices, same with Dominoes. As others have said it all seems to be about the offers/ deals.

Hotsweatymumsspagetti · 22/09/2024 16:50

I have been complaining about this for a few years. I too thought it was way cheaper than it actually is.

PP that talk about offers, please let me know what these are, I don’t think I’ve seen any!

It’s all moved onto the app too and I worry the staff still expect a tip even though I’ve done 99 % of the work

If you think that's bad try going to TGI! It's mental these days.

I think they have gone into administration.

I'm not in that great a mood today so I'll be blunt. Pizza hut is a business. You get a fresh pizza. Pizza hut isn't a supermarket. Business expenses and wages have risen. COL. Nothing you wont have heard of before. Pizza hut has massive pizzas. They need to pay their staff. They need to pay for the building costs. They need to pay tax. They need to pay for a lot. Make a pizza yourself out of flour water and toppings if you are bothered.

I'm aware of all that thanks. It's not possible to make your own pizza when you're about and about in town 🤣 I don't expect things to be cheap these days but personally I think some places are just blatantly profiteering and they will end up closing because of it. Not my issue I guess.

The problem is that you being in the restaurant is the biggest cost as rent, staff, utilities etc don't really change with your order so they need essentially a minimum spend to cover the fixed costs. The ingredients are the cheapest bit so giving you a starter, bottomless soda and salad bar for close to free makes more sense than setting prices lower and customers ordering pizza and tap water for instance. It's the same reason why pizza takeaways do bogof rather than half price. I might not be explaining it well but it makes economic sense anyway

westisbest1982 · 22/09/2024 18:11

Why didn't you go elsewhere as soon as you saw the prices? They have crappy pizza's there anyway - ever heard of Rudy's or Franco Manco? Good quality pizzas that are reasonably priced, and the restaurants have nicer ambiences than any Pizza Hut.

Because we didn't have time otherwise we'd have missed the start of the film. Not everyone lives in huge cities with tons of choice.

I did the same! Well - I walked over to the restaurant , looked at the menu and walked off! It was ridiculous! It used to be ok I thought price wise

FasterMichelin · 22/09/2024 18:20

I know, it's mental! I paid £8 for a tiny cheese panini the other day at a cafe, I nearly chocked when I saw the size!

I cook a lot more at home now, the prices just aren't worth it!

TheJones · 22/09/2024 18:24

Same - we’ve really changed how we eat now - maybe the last few years since prices have increased and set service charges. We eat a lot more at home and set the dining room up nice etc

Crazy expensive considering actual pizza ingredients cost actually comes to about £5 (cousins just bought an ooni pizza cooker so it's all about the dough!)

zoemum2006 · 22/09/2024 18:48

I worked at Pizza Hut in the 90s for about 5 years and I still love to eat it but MY GOD it's become expensive (while also moving away from a proper waitress restaurant to a QR code at the table type place).

You could have a medium pizza to feed 2 people for £5.99 back then. If you double it for inflation that's £12 - it's now a LOT more than that! Plus they don't really do the medium for 2 pizza any more - cheeky!

I now only get it take-away as there are brilliant deals or have the buffet.

Not sure why as it's unlimited. I guess uses bigger bowl leads to waste though.

I know @Brownstains, I was there yesterday Grin

bifurCAT · 22/09/2024 19:25

Yeah it's funny how those chains work, that they're so used to (and therefore expecting of) people using vouchers that knock off 50%, that their default menu prices are now twice as much.

Sucks to be you if you don't have a voucher!
(Not directed at you OP!)

I find it very annoying not being able to go to a restaurant without preparing vouchers beforehand :(

Me too so I won’t go! And I find somewhere independent. Same with shopping- I won’t go into a food shop like Tesco unless I have my Clubcard on me.

DelilahBucket · 22/09/2024 20:23

That's why we avoid chains. We went out for lunch yesterday. Small restaurant.where we go regularly, because it's cheap but amazing quality. The owner has recreated a big Mac meal, double burger, fries and a drink, for £7. All freshly prepared on site with ingredients from local suppliers. Unlike Macdonald's, the extra 21p it cost meant we had decent food and were still full six hours later.
