Family member awarded enhanced pip - AIBU?

My family member has just been awarded enhanced pip in both living and mobility components.
Shes told me that she’s twisted the truth during the assessment and told the assessor that she has lots of pain and can’t really walk at all, but she walks all the time as I see her out and about - we live in a hilly area. I know people who are in a wheelchair and struggle to get enhanced rate - so I really don’t understand how she’s managed this.
I know people will say mind your own business but she’s told me she’s actually lied to them.

What does jump out at me is that the majority genuinely qualify for state support, I’m sure. But there is a evidently a pervasive feeling of guilt for claiming.

The deserving have no need to feel this way, but those who would seek to defraud the public purse deserve our opprobrium.

Sorry I don't this beleive
She wouldn't get PIP at the highest rates with no evidence
Anybody can put in a claim but you need evidence to back it up.

Yep this. ^

CrossUniStudent · 19/09/2024 17:53

I don't believe anyone is getting pip without some type of medical evidence or equivalent. Even illnesses 'that can't be proved' (I assume you mean things like ME or Fibromyalgia) get diagnosed or are evidenced by medical professionals.

OhmygodDont · 19/09/2024 17:48

Now that’s just greedy.

See I would sell one but then I would have extra money in the bank and all the "taxpayers" wouldn't be happy. Oh what a pickle.

They receive Government money which should be able to be accounted for to stop abuse of the system.

The whole point of DLA /PIP is that its non means tested and can ve used for anything that benefits the recipient, be that paying for a bill ,getting some food shopping ,or paying for a spa weekend .

HungryLittleCrocodile · 19/09/2024 17:54

nextdoornightmares · 19/09/2024 17:44

Of course. Silly me. I should really call the DWP and ask how I repay any surplus money I have left each month 😂

At least you can feed your goat with your surplus. Grin

She hasn’t been asked for any clinical evidence from her doctor.

You are obviously making this up. Pip relies on evidence. they never take your word. go and find s different hobby.

100% this. Wouldn't happen.

I believe they are already introducing access to all bank accounts now.

I am all for benefits I just believe more accountability of how the money is spent is needed.

That was a proposal. It ran in to trouble and is not happening, at least not yet. DWP can access bank accounts where fraud is suspected, but not willy nilly. I will try to find a link.

Ah, just remembered. Those powers were in the Tories proposed Data Protection and Digital Information Bill. The bill was never passed due to the GE.

Actually it’s the billions of pounds of tax the rich and big corporations manage to get out of paying. Not a few hundred quid a month for a select few

Agree, but this doesn't help though does it?

So you’re saying that pip claimants would get pulled if god forbid they treated themselves to a few winter clothing items from an online shop. Or if a disabled person like me, who cannot leave my home often, god forbid I use some of my benefit money on paying for my Netflix so I have something to take my mind off of the pain. Disabled people are allowed to have ‘nice things’ - we shouldn’t have to live in poverty and as most of us have a short life expectancy and our disabilities will never improve (likely worsen), we shouldn’t spend our entire lives getting pulled up on what we’re spending our money on and being terrified if we spend our money on something we’d be deemed as we ‘shouldn’t’. Also, disabled people often get takeaways as they’re unable to cook for themselves - would this be seen as a ‘luxury’ and not allowed rather than a necessary purchase.

disabled people are people and should be treated like people, our lives are pretty awful - let us just live them

I just feel everything should be accountable and UK benefits should be paid in a way that can stop them from being sent abroad or taken as cash and stashed under the bed.

Agree. We should definitely absolutely 100% do the same with child benefit and the state pension.
Fuck the kids and fuck the old people - I want to know how they are spending my money!

So everyone who gets child benefit, universal credit, a state pension etc etc should do the same then?

Daltonbear1 · 19/09/2024 17:57

The only thing that should change in my view as someone that gets enhanced pip on both and that uses it to pay for carers and mobility scooter every month is that if you don’t need to pay for extra stuff ie car to help you get about, carers or any other stuff as I do know of a couple of folks that don’t use it for extra help then 8 would argue you r not disabled enough. Now I do know that they want to try and see whee peopel are using it maybe that’s a good point because I am not sure why some do need their money if not using it to cover extra costs

I don't have a goat but I do have 3 small children so that's kind of the same. Oh I forgot I'm not allowed to have children when I claim benefits. Better not tell anybody I'm pregnant with a 4th either...

That is fine but non of that needs cash it can all be paid via a bank transfer or debit card and is accounted for.

Sadly not. One is a heap of shite and the other one is currently needing something fixed so isn't driveable. But still it's nice to say I have 2 cars 😂

I forgot students! We should definitely stop all student loans. They can have vouchers and any housing costs paid directly to the landlords. It sounds soooooooo easy to implement too! 😉

It’s not paid by cash it’s paid to bank account which can be monitored if needed

Not state pension that is a payment linked to contributions.

Public servants are employed to do a job for the Government not the same as benefit claimants.

Pension credit, yes.

I believe all businesses should be cashless too.

It is. People aren't getting paid benefits in cash 😂
