to think that putting explosives in devices such as pagers and walkie talkies can lead to indiscriminate injuries and killings

Let's get the first thing out of the way - it's not right to fire missiles and rockets at people - as that can cause indiscriminate injuries as well.

Putting explosives in devices such as pagers and walkie talkies - it sounds clever. Just send a signal and an explosion goes off potentially injuring and killing your opponent who has it. It will also disrupt communication methods.

But once you put the explosive in it, you lose control of where it goes and when it gets blown up. It could be a child has it. It could be on a plane - and might not be picked up by security.

You don't know where it ends up. Which means that it has the potential for unintended consequences.

What about any that didn't go off? Are there objects that have been booby trapped and are just potentially waiting to explode - and who knows where they are? The thing about booby traps is that you just don't know who will set them off.

Booby traps seem to be against the International Humanitarian Law if they can injure civillians.

Oh give over. Leave to where?

Yes it’s weird that of all the Arab countries surrounding them, none are opening their borders to allow the innocent civilians safe harbour whilst Hamas are dealt with. Funny that isn’t it.

If it had been a UK intelligence agency attack on a terrorist organisation, such as the Taliban, you would be cheering the ingenuity of the sheer precision and efficacy. But apparently many people side with terrorists, these days.

Edited

Would we? I don't recall ever celebrating about people having their genitals blown off or their eyes blown out or children being blown to bits or the general population being terrorised which has been evident on some MN threads.

Newsflash - most of us don't want to be dragged into a bigger war by the lunatics in Israel's Govt and are not watching their actions with any kind of high regard.

Not surprised Israel would use such an indiscriminate method. This is the government which is enacting a genocide. If any other country we’re doing this UN peacekeepers would have been sent in.

It's the opposite of indiscriminate.

Highly targeted

Nah!

Let Israel do our dirty work for us. Let the Iranian backed terrorists do our dirty work for us. Let them destroy each other.

Did you miss the terrorist organisation part?

Better than carpet bombing Gaza and killing thousands of children.
I just think it's a shame Israel couldn't/didn't target Hamas this way.

The issue I think is that Hamas have embedded themselves deliberately into gazan society. They deliberately hide behind their own children, make their schools and bedrooms a military base. This is a war crime. The world is silent about that.

if Israel was committing a genocide; why are there still 2 million Palestinians in Gaza and 3 in the West Bank? They could eradicate them all tomorrow; so if they don’t care about civilians or international law, why haven’t they? Why bother warning people if they are intending to kill them?

What would you do if a man was shooting at your children and using his own kid as a human shield? You’d do whatever it took to protect your kids. And if you killed his child whilst defending yours, it wouldn’t be your fault. It would be his.

Oh this is pure bollocks.
The collateral damage caused yesterday and today is minuscule compared to any other warfare I have come across. Do you know anything about warfare?

You want them to be left to get on with destroying Jews?

People like you are exactly why Israel must exist. Jewish people are not safe anywhere:

The fact the UN is telling Israel to stop suggests maybe they aren’t being all cuddly and thoughtful about their fighting (genocide)

Edited

Haha, do you know who put forward this motion? Do you know who supports it? Look up Hillel Neuer, you could learn something about how the UN is run. Saudi Arabia chairs the UN Women’s Rights Commission. Iran recently chaired UN disarmament conference. Very naive to imagine it's a bunch of holy cloaks with long white beards...

So, are you saying the little boy playing with his parent’s charger was deliberately targeted by Israel. Or how about the people injured at the boy’s funeral by another exploding device?

op, your reply upthread:
It's a clever idea - but it just seems wrong
Fucking understatement there really? Ofc it's wrong.

I am saying that against the back drop of warfare this was highly targeted.

I know a bit about terrorism and I know Israel celebrates it even when they murdered 96 British people.

"That this House (of Commons) notes that the sixtieth anniversary of the bombing of the King David Hotel fell on 22nd July 2006; recalls that 96 people died in this atrocity, which remains the highest death toll for British subjects in a terrorist attack; further notes that an event was held in Jerusalem to celebrate this event and that prominent members of the Knesset, including former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, attended; condemns terrorism unreservedly; and associates itself with the comments of Her Majesty's Ambassador in Tel Aviv and the Consul-General in Jerusalem, `We do not think that it is right for an act of terrorism, which led to the loss of many lives, to be commemorated'."

You missed my sarcasm - the rich Gulf States and Eqypt give platitudes to Israel and Palestinians, while actually playing both off against the other.

Correct, this was an act of war against Lebanon. Israel are successfully pushing a wider war. Wonder how big their end goal is this time.

It targets whoever is holding or is near to it at the time. How do you ensure who has it? Did you see the little boy’s funeral. Disgusted you are justifying a little boys death. Do you have a son?

Genuinely what the juddering fuck are you talking about?? They used devices specifically provided by hezbollah to its members so that they could receive instructions. They didn't just pop into a random branch of Curry's and start booby trapping stuff. It was about as discriminate attack as you could possibly have against that many (completely legitimate) targets.

Against the backdrop of war, it was targeted.

Many civilians die in war.

But for me, it's just something about it. With bombs, you have a degree of control over them. You can see the target and you know they are there.

This is "fire and forget". Or not even "fire". It's basically putting explosives into devices that they assume will all go to terrorists (Did they know that all those pagers would end up there?), not knowing where the people were, in what situation they were, where the pagers were, and then sending a signal to cause them to explode.

So you’re saying the international media reports of women and children being injured and killed holding or being near exploding devices are wrong?
