To get frustrated over pity errors my colleague makes

I work in a very small team of 2 plus our boss. We all WFH. My colleague is paid a London wage (she mentioned hers without me asking) which is over £10,000 more thank I get.

She makes a lot of silly mistakes. For example she replied to a forwarded email so the recipient of her reply did not include the original sender who had sent to query and needed the answer to which she replied and she wondered why the issue was outstanding. Another example - she does not check her work thoroughly so once (a lot of the times!) something went out with a mistake which was later returned and we had to correct it.

Our boss doesn’t get involved usually so quite often these errors and corrections are made without getting noticed.

However I feel like telling my boss she did this and that and I picked it and rectified it etc. but I don’t. It’s too pity. At the same time I feel disheartened because I get paid much less. For the context I did ask for a pay review based on my performance and my management agreed I am a high performer but the company as a whole only had a certain amount in the pot and none of us got more than inflation.

AIBU to feel like telling my boss my colleague has made a pity error?

So few places do london weighting now, particularly if wfh
I mean, wtf should you get it if you are not commuting

Because the cost of housing is higher?

Caramellie3 · 23/09/2024 11:21

I doubt the errors would worry you if you earned more money. Time to change job op I think.

If you say 'pity' in a Scottish accent it sounds like 'petty'.

Not mine. I can imagine pity coming out like putty in some Scottish accents, but petty is almost always going to have quite a long 'eh' sound in the middle.

Maybe South African accent? I have a SA friend and I think she would say them quite similarly.

GuPuddingRamekinHoarder · 23/09/2024 11:37

I think people are being a bit mean, not every job requires perfect spelling. OP could be a whiz with numbers and the errors the colleague could be making are numerical, hence OP’s dismay.

And if by some fluke, the OP and her colleague live not that far apart from each other but the colleague earns £10k for doing the same job but badly, then I can see why OP is annoyed.

OP, I’d be looking for another job, it’s not fair for you to have to prop up someone on £10k more than you.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/09/2024 11:37

Not sure if you are being ironic or not. Either way, it is up to your manager to deal with this colleague and sort any issues, which they can’t do if they don’t know about it. If you are unhappy about the salary disparity I would be looking for a new job op.

Butchyrestingface · 23/09/2024 11:49

A petty the OP will have deregistered and will never be seen again (at least under this username) ...

ManchesterLu · 23/09/2024 11:53

This is one of the funniest things I've ever read. It's actually really pity of you to make this thread when you also cannot spell.

FWIW the email thing, not replying to the original sender, I've done a few times, and I'm known for being meticulous in my work. Everyone makes mistakes. Concentrate on your own work.

Oh do stop telling tails when you are not so prefect yourself.

This thread just keeps on giving 😂😂

Indeed!

🤣🤣🤣

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 23/09/2024 11:58

This has got to be a joke?!

ScottBakula · 23/09/2024 11:58

This has got to be a wind up hasn't it?
My spelling and grammar are poor but even I can see several errors.

InSpainTheRain · 23/09/2024 12:01

OP if you are going to raise anything you need to understand the difference between petty and pity first!

Moveoverdarlin · 23/09/2024 12:05

Come on guys, give the OP a break. This is all getting really pity. Oh sorry I mean petty. Petty.

greencheetah · 23/09/2024 12:16

Given the number of errors (not just the pity ones) in your post, I suggest you keep your mouth shut and your head down

You mean give her a brake, obviously. Tut tut.

I can't help wondering whether the colleague that the OP thinks is making errors, is in fact not making any errors at all. The OP obviously has trouble with spelling but doesn't realise it and thinks she is spotting errors in the colleague's spelling when it is the OP whose spelling is at fault. It reminds me of the teacher who crossed out my daughter's correctly spelled word and wrote in an incorrectly spelled one!

This thread has poked the vipers nest.

Oh, lighten up. People are mostly being mildly funny at the expense of a (possibly consciously?) unfortunately expressed OP, not committing character assassination.

Lighten up? You don’t exactly sound easy going yourself.

Pherian · 23/09/2024 13:00

London weighting has nothing to do with work performance or experience. It's due to the cost of living in the area and the company pays it so their business can be staffed in that area. Her cost of living is considerably higher than yours say perhaps in the North. I live in the north of the UK and I have previously lived in London ( I would never again) and the difference in cost is eye watering.

People make mistakes ( I do all the time) and I'm sure you do too. No one is perfect. Sounds like your boss is already aware of the issues with their mistakes. If you are not happy in your job, find a new one. That's the only way to get a decent pay rise these days.

madaboutpurple · 23/09/2024 13:00

Must admit this has made me laugh and I am continuing to laugh. A complaint about petty errors when the poster made a few petty errors herself .Maybe the colleague was not well on the day. Giving a bit of leeway is best. I do not like the idea of snitching to the boss. That is pithy and petty! How about asking if the colleague needs a little help would be better than going to the boss.

OneDaringCat · 23/09/2024 13:08

I think if this is a consistent issue then it should be raised with their manager - not sure why that would be deemed as inappropriate. If it's infrequent mistakes then everyone makes them.

Sooverwork · 23/09/2024 13:37

DeCaray · 18/09/2024 17:02

The boss should sack the pair of you if that's your standard of writing and you're complaining about someone who has an even lower standard.

Well said. Perhaps the colleague isn’t making errors and because OP can’t spell she’s assuming ( wrongly) that fellow colleague is making mistakes.

Sunisshiningweatherissweet2 · 23/09/2024 13:44

It's a pity your pettiness picked up on the 'pity' rather than the 'petty'.😆
