Is it rude to walk into a supermarket with a costa/Starbucks drink in your hand?

I should preface this post by saying this is lighted!

I have always been taught growing up that is rude and you can't walk into a supermarket drinking a costa/Starbucks drink. I remember standing outside with my Mum when I was younger rushing to finish my drink to put it in the bin outside the supermarket before going in. Now I am in my 20's and an adult I have still have not walked into a supermarket with a shop bought drink in my hand. Maybe I should try it one day?

Was my Mum correct in what she instilled in me?

Good point!

I’m sorry to my grandmama but I will use any bag in any shop!

Does anyone need to have a coffee and go shopping at the same time though?

Bottled water and cold drinks, I can just about understand, but I would imagine that having a hot drink in one hand while trying to shop would be a health and safety hazard more than anything else.

Nothing to do with being rude.

Take away coffees don't have to be a need, it's perfectly OK to simply want to have one. Do you never eat or drink anything other than when you need to?

Coffee shops would soon go out of business if only people in need could shop there 😁

I agree though, the Tesco I go to doesn't have cup holders on the trollies so practicalities would come into play

I don’t think it’s rude but probably just a bit uneccessary, not sure why anyone would need to stroll around Tesco drinking a Starbucks.

I do think it’s hugely rude when people open and eat food items whilst they’re shopping though, if you haven’t paid for it yet then don’t start munching on it. 😂

When does that happen? Never once in my probably million visits to a shop has anyone ever accused me of stealing a carrier bag, do you give off some kind of thief vibe 😁

Tisfortired · 18/09/2024 18:30

Same OP I had the same drilled into me as a kid - not to walk into shops eating or drinking anything. I also remember having to stand outside shops and quickly finish whatever it is we had.

Not sure why - and as an adult (I’m 33) I do still feel a bit naughty like the security guard will tell me off for coming in with my takeaway coffee cup but it hasn’t happened yet 😂

I'll tell you what's rude, starting a thread asking for opinions then ghosting the replies 😂

FWIW I won’t do a food shop without a Starbucks

I am specifically referring to why you need to drink hot coffee and walk around shopping at the same time

Even if you simply just wanted to, it's not sensible to walk around with hot drinks especially with lots of people about.

Edited

Exactly. Common sense prevails!

sharpclawedkitten · 18/09/2024 16:40

No. Apparently my grandmother thought it was "common" to eat fish and chips walking along the street.

I don't!

My mother also says this. Or to eat or drink anything in the street.

Gogosmarty · 18/09/2024 18:38

I'm not sure the min wage shop staff are going to give a monkey's! Unless you chuck it over them or something...

I don't get the obsession with taking coffee with you everywhere. I like my coffee in comfort preferably with cake.
Not rude though.

Agreed. Within half a mile of my house there are at least half a dozen coffee shops or machines. A Starbucks drive through is currently being built.

I love a decent cup of coffee, but I would like to drink it slowly and in comfort, not pushing a trolley round Sainsbury's (where they have a Starbucks cafe and machine)

Redkitebaby · 18/09/2024 18:11

Tesco have Costa machines as well!
So definitely encouraged.
Only time it’s rude are the people who get a coffee from the machine and drink going around shop. Then don’t pay for it. I see plenty of people doing that.

Aren't the machines intended for takeaway drinks?

They have cup holders on trolleys in America! Would love the same here… 🛒 🧋

Tesco have cup holders on their trolleys. Well my local one does anyway.

diddl · 18/09/2024 19:06

Those that do it-why?

If we're talking about supermarket food shopping I just want to get in & get it done.

Not be browsing with a coffee!

ETA
Suppose it could be handy if there's a queue!

ManyATrueWord · 18/09/2024 19:19

Our Tesco has a Costa in it so I vote no, not any more.

loudbatperson · 18/09/2024 19:24

I was always taught not to take open food or drink into any shop, to avoid accidents needing clean up or damage to stock.

When I was young it seemed to be an accepted unwritten rule and it was rare to see it, but it seems to be pretty common now, although I didn't allow my children too.

What is considered acceptable behaviour is constantly changing though, and lots of things that were a big no no seem to be fine now. I remember being told not to eat on the street, with an exception for some chips on a bench at the seaside. Nowadays it seems normal to eat crisps, even burgers and chicken while walking down the street.

RickiRaccoon · 18/09/2024 19:33

Your mother probably just said it was 'rude' because she couldn't be bothered explaining exactly why you don't do it.There was a general rule you don't walk and eat/drink because it's more likely you'll spill something. You don't eat/drink in a store to avoid sticky fingers on their merchandise. I once stood on fried chicken bones in a clothing shop and imagined the person must've touched the clothes with greasy chicken fingers. 🤢 I've seen drinks dropped on the floor and they do make a mess.

507am · 18/09/2024 19:36

Our local Sainsbury's has a Costa attached and the other day I saw a Mum pushing her baby around the supermarket in a trolley while drinking a coffee. I've literally never seen anyone drinking coffee before in a supermarket and I thought it was a genius way of making the weekly shop (with demanding child) a bit more bearable!

5475878237NC · 18/09/2024 19:37

I think it's rude yes as is eating on the street unless at a street food market or vendor. I don't want people littering or getting items mucky with their wotsit or coffee fingers before I buy it.

worcesterpear · 18/09/2024 19:40

Not just supermarkets, but I remember shops not allowing food or drink. I do sometimes take food into Tesco as they have a Costa inside and a Greggs downstairs, so I assume they must be ok with it. I feel a bit awkward about taking drinks into other shops, I might do depending on circumstances, but would be sure not to drink it in the shop.

Getonwitit · 18/09/2024 19:43

Why would you want too? I laughed my head off in Waitrose a few years ago a woman had picked up her free hot drink then started her shopping, she had a coffee in one had and a basket and phone in the other, she was struggling to get an item off the shelf as she couldn't get her hand close enough because of the basket and had nowhere to put the drink. Just made herself look silly. You don't need a coffee whilst shopping.

Gingernaut · 18/09/2024 19:46

I grew up with notices stating exactly this

No food or drink to be consumed inside these premises

Food was often in open containers and if dropped or spilt, could have damaged the goods on sale

Now, everywhere you look, some gobdaw is slurping or chewing something as they bowl down the aisles

The amount of discarded food, drinks and containers left on shop shelves is just disgusting, let alone the stolen items, consumed as the thieves wander round the store before they stash them towards the back of the shelves

It's revolting and it makes more work for the assistants stacking the shelves
