Is it rude to walk into a supermarket with a costa/Starbucks drink in your hand?

I should preface this post by saying this is lighted!

I have always been taught growing up that is rude and you can't walk into a supermarket drinking a costa/Starbucks drink. I remember standing outside with my Mum when I was younger rushing to finish my drink to put it in the bin outside the supermarket before going in. Now I am in my 20's and an adult I have still have not walked into a supermarket with a shop bought drink in my hand. Maybe I should try it one day?

Was my Mum correct in what she instilled in me?

I don't think it is rude unless there is a sign saying that outside food and drink isn't to be brought into the shop.

Spilling it on the floor and not cleaning it up, leaving the cup on a shelf for someone else to dispose of, or spitting the coffee at people you find annoying as if you are an enraged llama would be rude but walking around drinking a coffee isn't.

Poggishairtufts · 18/09/2024 17:13

This is something I'd never do and I don't like seeing it either. I think it shows a lack of respect to the shop, there's a chance it could spill and make a sticky mess. If you need a drink a swig of water would do otherwise finish your coffee then go into the supermarket

PeachRose1986 · 18/09/2024 17:15

Same, OP. I was taught the same.

No. Apparently my grandmother thought it was "common" to eat fish and chips walking along the street.

I don't!

She was absolutely correct!

LittleLlama · 18/09/2024 17:16

My Mum was of the firm belief that it was more polite to not eat or drink well moving around, as:

  1. You are more likely to spill it/make a mess
  2. You don’t enjoy the food/drink so much.

Except Ice cream!

I don't get the obsession with taking coffee with you everywhere. I like my coffee in comfort preferably with cake.
Not rude though.

This. If I want a drink I go and sit down and have one. I don't find it necessary to wander about clutching one.

rumblegrumble · 18/09/2024 17:22

Definitely not rude, I actually think trolleys should have cup holders! I was taught eating while walking was rude and still don't do that, though I don't think I've ever particularly wanted to as I'd much prefer to be able to focus on my food and I'd no doubt spill it down myself if I tried. Think drinking was fine though - if not then sorry mum!

alpacachino · 18/09/2024 17:23

It's more of a health and safety thing

Spomb · 18/09/2024 17:25

I think your mother probably just didn’t want to have to carry around an empty drinks container when you’d finished or were worried you’d spill it!

swimlyn · 18/09/2024 17:26

Much ruder to be eating/drinking the supermarkets own products lifted from the shelves.

The abandoned shop packaging tells you that there was no intention of paying for the items.

KrisAkabusi · 18/09/2024 17:27

My local Supervalue has a sign saying that hot drinks are not to be consumed while shopping. On the other hand, the trollies at my local Tesco have cupholders. Different shops, different attitudes.

I was taught this too. For those asking why, you could spill it over merchandise, or on floor where it's a slip hazard or someone could bump into you and you or they get drink over themselves.

It's definitely self centered if not downright rude.

Take away coffee tends to come with a lid?

Mapletreelane · 18/09/2024 17:29

We were having my daughter's birthday party, possibly 8 years, and one of her friends turned up with a McDonald's milkshake and chips. Walked right through the door and into the litchen holding them! I told her Dad we would feed them and he said she'd just asked for it on the way and as they were passing one why not! I could see all the other kids eyeing it up enviously. Thought that was really bizarre!

Ponderingwindow · 18/09/2024 17:29

Every supermarket near me has a coffee shop at the entrance so you can have a drink while you shop.

Well, at least every supermarket I actually use has a coffee shop at the entrance.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 18/09/2024 17:34

I’m not sure if it’s rude, but I thought you weren’t allowed to bring food or drink into shops. There were always signs up saying so, so I’m often surprised to see people eating and drinking.

Mind you, I was brought up before coffee shops and the need for constant drinking, so I guess it’s different now. I would still never do it though!

SonjaBarkerFinch · 18/09/2024 17:34

It’s common as muck to walk into a shop with a coffee.

Our local Tesco has a Costa at the entrance as you walk in and the trolleys have coffee holders, how very rude of them.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 18/09/2024 17:36

It’s only weird when they leave their empty cup on the shelf imo.

Guavafish1 · 18/09/2024 17:37

Yes I remember when eating and drinking whilst walk was rude!

culture has changed loads now…

BotterMon · 18/09/2024 17:38

I find it common (eating and drinking whilst walking anywhere) along with people walking along fixated on their phones, especially when they have kids with them.

jamtarty · 18/09/2024 17:38

I wouldn’t want to go shopping one-handed.

kaos2 · 18/09/2024 17:38

You weren't supposed to eat or drink in shops

Life has changed and you seemingly can do what you like now .

MasterBeth · 18/09/2024 17:39

Rude? No.

Unnecessary and a bit crass? Yes.

ChampagneLassie · 18/09/2024 17:40

Rude to who? The supermarket staff? Other shoppers? I think historically there were different norms but today I don’t see any issue with this. Waitrose used to do a free coffee thing so loads of people were wheeling around coffee in hand

MaryBeardsShoes · 18/09/2024 17:07

  1. are you going to clean up if your drop it?

  2. when you’ve finished the drink will you take the cup with you or discard it somewhere?

  3. Can you not manage without a takeaway coffee??

I'm not sure people generally drop cups of coffee frequently enough for this to be a meaningful point/question.
