Why sit in the kids section if you don’t want to be around kids

Meatballsandmash · 18/09/2024 12:09

Sat having lunch in Ikea with my Dd, very quiet, not many people and lots of free tables inside and out. We’re sat in the kids area, Dd is playing.
Oldsr couple chooses to come and sit on a table nearby.
Couple starts tutting and complaining under their breath about the kids making some noise (not excessive) whilst they play

Why would you sit in a kids area, if you didn’t want the noise of kids 🤷🏻‍♀️

Annoying.

I find this happens to me a lot, for example on the train empty carriage someone will get on and sit right opposite us despite the train being relatively empty then look annoyed or tut if my kids so much as speak, don’t know why people do it but I’m sure people will be along to make excuses that it’s their “favourite seat” and your child should be quiet at all times when out in public

Mountainpika · 18/09/2024 12:14

Of course not! Silly people.

Or does the place offer YOU'RE WELCOME TO COME IN FOR COFFEE AND A GRUMBLE ?

CCLCECSC · 18/09/2024 12:14

Bizarre behaviour. Some people like to complain about everything don't they though.

Anisty · 18/09/2024 12:16

Oh how silly - totally with you on this!

FOJN · 18/09/2024 12:19

People are weird but I'm struggling more with the information that the IKEA cafe was quiet at lunchtime on a Saturday.

TinkerTiger · 18/09/2024 12:20

I’ve never noticed a ‘kids section’ in the restaurant, there are families everywhere whenever I go (which obviously doesn’t bother me in the slightest), but is there signage to indicate the area? Perhaps the couple hadn’t noticed.

Doesn’t excuse the grumbling, but perhaps why they chose to sit there.

Why people choose to sit close to other people when there is tons of space around is a whole other thread!

I think this is today and the Sat means sitting.

I never noticed a kids section in my local ikea. I thought it was a free for all. I really want meatballs.

That would be my cue to politely and helpfully explain they were in the kids section and they might find it quieter elsewhere. They will either have a light bulb moment and move, or they will shut up (usually).

RandomUser82 · 18/09/2024 12:22

It's like our local beach in the summer, most of it is dog free, but a small section allows them. So people come onto the dog bit then moan that there are-shock horror- dogs on there. Does my nut in.

MazeRunner · 18/09/2024 12:23

Yes, odd behaviour. Perhaps they didn’t realise it was a kids area? Only reason I can think of.

There’s still some old fashioned people, who think children should only be seen and not heard. I was on a train once with my 1 and 4 year old. They were as good as gold, we were sat together, 1 year old on my knee, my dd sat next to me. My one year old literally let out 1 small shout - the man in the opposite aisle turned around and looked at me as if they were throwing rocks at him 🤣

Depends on the IKEA. Some have IKEA toys/ play kitchens etc. set up in an area near some tables.

Me too now..
Damn those meatballs are good.

Meatballsandmash · 18/09/2024 12:26

It’s in the kids section-kids toys, high chair, tv, kids chairs etc…I mean, obviously people can choose to sit wherever they like, but pre Dd, there’s no way I’d actively choose there, unless there was nowhere else. There so many other tables everywhere to choose, much quieter…it’s weird

I had something similar recently.

My son was playing in a cricket Tournament recently. The grandparents of another team came and sat right on top of us, the boys whilst on a break (no other teams playing) were told by the lady to be quiet.

Why visit a child’s cricket match, sit next to a large group of children in a huge empty field and then scold the children at their own tournament.

if they were misbehaving I would have told them off myself but they were fine

KnickerlessParsons · 18/09/2024 12:39

And that's why grammar is important.

timeforanewmoniker · 18/09/2024 12:40

I don't have kids and I don't go to eat in family places for exactly this reason, let alone a kids' section.

Train is different as they may have booked a specific seat, although again I usually book first class and this mostly avoids the issue (plus it's cheaper if you're old).

Ikea meatballs contain horse, I wouldn't touch them.

Old people like to have things to complain about.

In this case, not particularly, because "Sat having lunch in Ikea" is also not the correct way to indicate that the incident took place on Saturday.

Everybody else managed to understand the OP just fine. It's only ever a small amount of posters that like to point out spelling or grammatical errors.

Porridgeislife · 18/09/2024 12:42

They’re the same with people who book seats in the bulkhead rows in planes. Yes, there’s going to be a baby next to you because that’s where the babies are put!

We had a man huff and stare at me all the way from Dubai to London because of my well behaved 10 month old - they were the type that wanted to sleep the moment they got on the plane and forgo meals etc, but didn’t bring masks nor ear plugs.

Windchimesandsong · 18/09/2024 12:43

Seems strange of them. The only thing I can think is maybe they're shopping with family and sat down waiting for theo grandchildren to join them? Some people only like their own kids/grandkids, for some reason.

This was the Elizabeth line so no they didn’t book the seat 😂

Me too, and I'm the old person in this, we once left our favourite eating place because the only table available was in the section where they seated families.

daffodilandtulip · 18/09/2024 12:53

YABU for discussing ikea lunches while we're all stuck at work. Now we all want meatballs.

DoIWantTo · 18/09/2024 12:54

IKEA is not the place to go for peace and quiet 😂

housethatbuiltme · 18/09/2024 12:55

I mentioned this on here before but once we where in the kids soft play section of a family pub (think wacky warehouse but non chain version). A woman in her late 60s maybe who seemingly had no children with her (there was only our kid and 1 other family with their 1 kid there who she clearly wasn't with as she awkwardly chatted to them and the seemingly shooed her away) was sat eating in the soft play area.

She came over as our food arrived and we where trying to eat (weird and rude as is) to 'chat' with my DS and then proceeded to picked a fight with my DS (& then me) about his sex/gender. Imagine correcting someone and their parent on weather they are a boy or girl, she was getting quite angry and insistent about it.

All I kept thinking is 'why are you even in the kids play area talking to children'. There was a restaurant/bar next door that was quiet and with plenty of seats, she actively walked through it and sought out the kids area.

Kids just attract nut jobs for some reason (and its not the kids fault).
