To also lock cat out of the room?

JulianBoon · 18/09/2024 07:55

DD used to have cat in her room. He is an orange cat and she has a desk with built in shelves with lots of trinkets on and he always tries to jump up and knock everything off.

So he's taken to sleeping in my room, but he wakes me up all the time. Jumping up and down off his bed (thick blankets onto of the wardrobe) and coming to make biscuits on my face at 4am.

He can't sleep in the living room (dog)

I was thinking of getting him a big tall cat tree for the upstairs hall, so just outside my bedroom, something with an enclosed bed to keep him warm over winter.

I feel mean locking him out of all the bedrooms at night but he is really naughty and loves to knock things over! Funnily he doesn't do it in the daytime!

Poor cat? 🤣
Because he's being bought a £80 cat tree to sleep in, in a warm house, right outside his owners bedroom?

People are ridiculous and so overly dramatic, for what? There are actually thousands of 'poor cats' in Britain that actually deserve sympathy whilst living on the streets, being locked out of houses all night in rainstorms and snow.

This little monster is spoilt!

Well no doubt you are spending a lot of money on him and look after his physical needs.
I'm saying poor cat if he is being deprived of human company when he obviously wants that. I feel as though if you have a pet like a cat or dog their emotional needs are important.

SoupDragon · 18/09/2024 09:45

On the subject of dim ginger cats, I watched a Facebook reel yesterday where they taped off a doorway with ever increasing heights of tape and showed the great/tabby cat leaping over it. It got to about 3ft high. They they showed their ginger cat walking up to one level of tape, looking at it in bemusement and going back the way they'd come.

My ginger cat wasn't dim but she was a she. Maybe that was the difference.

I'm here with him all day.
I don't go to sleep till midnight.

Maybe that's a good angle to try and convince DH to get a 2nd cat so he's not lonely in the hall 😅

😹

For this very reason our cat is shut out too!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/09/2024 09:46

Good luck OP. I'm not a cat person at all, DP and DD are. I managed to resist us getting a cat for about 13 years until I finally caved over COVID.

My two rules were that I didn't have to deal with food or poo, and that the cat didn't enter our bedroom.

Rule 1 is still in effect 3 years later, but rule 2 had no hope. Cats do not do closed doors. Cats will sit and yowl, and scratch, and pull the carpet up, and stick their paws under the door, and will not let you sleep until you let the bloody cat in.

The annoying thing is that given the choice, she'll sleep in DDs room. However the moment she hears our door shut she's outside ours complaining about the situation.

Julianne65 · 18/09/2024 09:48

Our cat is not allowed in the bedroom at all and she’s used to it so never tries to get in. She had access to outside (catflap) and the run of the house otherwise. Does your cat go outside?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/09/2024 09:49

I'd have the dog upstairs and the cat shut in the living room, in fact that is what I do 😂

Cats are a PITA at night, mine starts pawing my face at 5am - no thank you.

Her emotional needs are just fine 😉😂

I love the rebranding as Orange cats x

Good. I'm glad he gets a lot of your company.

I still wouldn't have the heart to shut him out of my bedroom though.

One of the reasons I don't have a pet anymore is because I've always put their needs before my own. And found it mentally exhausting.

So much as I'd love another cat, or a dog, I don't get one as it's needs and demands would be a chore out stripping the pleasure the pet gave me.

That's a perfect reason to get a second cat! Rescues are bursting at the seams and they don't all make biscuits at 4am. (Mine give me dirty looks for waking them at 6am)

Older cats tend to sleep all night IME

I think caging a dog all night 😱 is worse than shutting a cat out of a bedroom personally but that's possibly another thread

If DD is happy with cat in her room if it didn't knock the stuff over, then couldn't you just put the stuff in a big closed box at night, or install drawers in the desk instead of open shelves. Doesn't help if he will also paw at her face though 😆

distractmeagain · 18/09/2024 09:57

welcome to the world of orange cats! 4am is pretty standard for any cat to be up and about!

🤣 My dog gets in his crate by himself when I get up to go to bed. It's his cave, his bedroom, he loves it in there.

I have to pull him out at 7am cause he just wants to stay in bed rather than go out to pee 😮‍💨

No I'm not a martyr.
I just feel when you take on the responsibility of an animal you owe it to them to give them the best life possible.
And if people aren't prepared to do that then they shouldn't take on pets.

Spinet · 18/09/2024 09:59

No cats in bedrooms here! If they didn't sit on your face in the middle of the night or stare at you until you wake up, maybe. One sleeps right outside DD's door in a plaintive attempt to be let in but she's not having it.

Get a bonded pair, you don't need to get outdoor access cats if you don't want to be concerned about timed cat flaps. There are many cats who are content indoors.

One of mine rarely goes out, 5 minutes and she's back in or she follows me outside.

GalileoHumpkins · 18/09/2024 10:01

I think if he's used to free access to the bedroom he won't be happy for the first couple of weeks, be prepared for scratching at the door and carpet and the most heartbreakingly sad meows you've ever heard in your life!

Overtheatlantic · 18/09/2024 10:05

Am I the only one who has just accepted that their fate is to be lorded over by the cat? Purring directly into my face at 4am? Sure no problem. Launching onto my abdomen when I’m in a dead sleep? Go ahead then. Second breakfast? Go talk to your father.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 18/09/2024 10:10

@Battlerope ours are all shut inside overnight with no way of getting out - we only open the cat flap after breakfast!

No, I live only to please my furry overlord.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 18/09/2024 10:15

My cat sleeps in the bathroom at night. He's been locked in a room at night since he was a kitten, it's his routine and he knows where to go when we say night night time 😂

Otherwise we would never sleep, the first week is a nightmare but once they know the score they settle- bit like toddlers!

I don't believe that you genuinely think that a cat that

-Has insurance
-Has a pet plan at vets and get wormed and flead every month

  • Has the best quality wet food on subscription
-Runs the house and is absolutely adored by everyone in the hone -Has a water fountain because he won't eat from static water
  • Is always asleep on someone's lap
-Has a box full of toys and has a subscription to a toy and catnip box
  • Has a catflap so he is never locked outside
And is our baby

Shouldn't be allowed to live with us because we're considering not allowing him to wake us up all through the night when we have to be up at 6am most mornings?

Really?

You think the rescue shouldn't have approved our application because we might give him a 5ft cat tree bed instead of 24 hour access to our room?

By your standards there would be millions more cats in shelters if we are unfit owners 🙄

I would give them free access to outside at all times. I think its quite cruel to keep them in. Especially for nocturnal animals, all the excitement happens at night- if anything it's less dangerous at night for cats as far less cars which in the UK is their biggest threat.

Mine were always out all night playing, OP is yours trapped inside? That's probably your problem. If you let him out he'll play outside and be snuggley all day.
