Pull out his airpod and chuck it away

I put my basket on the till, turned away to get a bag. Turned back, couldn't see my shopping basket – someone had put their basket ON my basket and were scanning their items. When I remonstrated with them, they said: 'What are you going to do about it?' Then ignored me. I swear, next time I'm going to pull the entitled tosser's bloody airpod out… What is going on?! I've never come across such dickish behaviour before.

Reading this and the OP - and maybe I'm just far too cynical these days, but i can't help think 'would these fellas have behaved like this if you were each a bloke?'. Assuming you and OP are both a woman here.

I am and you’re quite right.

Even if someone were in a daze and made this mistake the normal thing to do would be to apologise. Not ask someone “what you guna go?”
Not quite sure how you can defend the rude or aggressive behaviour?

I can't. That bit was out of order UNLESS OP's "Remonstrating" was aggressive

Mumsnet bingo. Someone behaves in an outlandishly rude way, the poster gets told they're doing it wrong and, oh, the other person might have something on their mind. Grin

I’m struggling a bit with the logistics of this one from the description…

So you went to self service till, put basket down, turned to shop assistant for a bag. Whilst you were getting a bag someone put their basket on top of yours and started using the till, then asked what you were going to do about it. This person was also wearing AirPods?

How far did you have to walk for a bag? Was your basket full of items or just one or two in there? Was there a big queue for the self service tills?

I’m trying to understand how he wouldn’t know you were using the till still just with how my local
supermarkets are set up. If you’d been gone for a few minutes and he thought the till was free and basket abandoned, sounds like it’s just a mistake. If not and you were clearly in view then yes he was rude.

I was thinking that with the airpods a lot of people to use them to cope if they find supermarkets overwhelming

What depressing responses but typical of this forum.

Exactly. And yet quite a few Mumsnetters are telling me I'm doing it wrong. It was shameless (white) male entitlement.

Why is that so funny?

It drives me mad that now we have to chase or wait for busy staff so we can grab a bag! missing point of thread completely!

The tills are fast-moving and manned – a basket that wasn't being used would be moved quickly. So many people manage to use it every day, without any issue, and yet this one entitled man couldn't manage it.

Mumsnet excuse bingo again. Dementia, things on their mind, ND, have to use AirPods to manage the supermarket. I had an AirPod in too, and yet – guess what – I manage to function in a normal, courteous way and wait my turn.

Agree. The manager harangued a member of staff on the tills about bags being left out for customers the other day. A member of staff will be giving them out for a while now.

We're talking 5 seconds. He was being obnoxious.

At our local ASDA the bags are held by the person supervising the self service check in, you have to ask for a bag and they come to the till and scan it in for you. I've had someone walk up to the till I was using to whilst I was asking for a bag, thinking it was unattended, didn't act like a dick though when I pointed out that I was getting a bag

The he definitely was. All the self service till I’ve seen it’s impossible not to notice someone is still using the till because of how they are set up.

I guarantee if you were a strapping 6ft bloke he wouldn’t have done it!

Everintroverte · 17/09/2024 15:49

Some of these responses are absolutely nuts. The chap saw a till, with a basket full of shopping and the OP getting a bag. He absolutely must have realised that it was in use and just didn't care. As evidenced by the fact he put his basket on the OPs full basket. He didn't move it, or ask if this was anyone's shopping. He just carried on like it was invisible.

I can't believe people are saying maybe he didn't know, or maybe the OP should have better prepared. If this was me I would have been fuming.

Fgfgfg · 17/09/2024 15:50

I would probably have beeped one or two of my items through before he paid and then when he got stroppy I'd have asked him what he was going to do about it.

Most of us manage to use these tills day in, day out. There's a broadly established etiquette – it's not that hard.

You always come up with these things afterwards though don't you. Often about 10 minutes after its all over but once or twice I've responded immediately and it was great!

That's a good idea as the till light would show as in use
