To not believe how expensive Topshop is?

So I grew up in the age of Topshop hype, when Kate Moss did a range that was like elite back then.

Obviously it declined hard, I stopped liking a lot of their stock. Now it’s on ASOS I absolutely love so much of their range but the price …

Almost £50 for a fluffy cardigan??

The prices have gone back to what they were in the 90's pretty much! Except now it's cheap shite made in China

poppyzbrite4 · 17/09/2024 13:53

Is it brylon and made by a child? Seems to be enough vogue nowadays.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 17/09/2024 14:20

You can't really expect things to cost the same as they did 30 years ago. Plus brexit has caused many import costs to rise - as expected.

WaneyEdge · 17/09/2024 14:28

It was never that cheap. I remember getting a denim jacket with a white fleece/fur lining around 1996, it was £45. I remember as parents wouldn’t pay (I didn’t ‘need’ it 🙄) so I had to save up 3 weeks wages from my Saturday job.

Yeah thanks for stating something we are all aware of. I also never compared the cost of it back in the 90s. I wasn’t wearing Topshop in the 90s because I was under the age of 8.

My point is I’ve seen similar on ASOS that are 50% cheaper. And Topshop don’t have stores anymore so don’t have the same overheads.

I feel like Topshop was always pricey - £30 for shorts, £40 for jeans, back in the early 00s

I was going to call you out because the 90s are def not 30 years ago.

Well now I feel old

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 17/09/2024 15:05

I think the price point hasn't changed too much when you bear in mind inflation rates. However the quality is awful now they've been taken over by asos.

mitogoshigg · 17/09/2024 15:06

It was always more expensive, the group had multiple shops at different markets, Dorothy Perkins was cheaper

This. It was never that cheap, it wasn't occupying that place in the market.

theemmadilemma · 17/09/2024 15:09

Yeah it was never a cheap shop.

No I know it was never cheap. I’m just surprised at the price of certain items. Like here £75 for this.

Some of their items seems to be priced as to what you’d expect. £10 plain t shirts, £40 jeans and boots.

But I come across some items and it’s like .. really?

But I was at uni in the early 00s and clearly remember jeans being £40 back then. T-shirts were never £10 - even then - they were closer to £15. So your expectations of how much it all 'should' cost seems not to be in line with what you'd expect, allowing for inflation?

Irridescantshimmmer · 17/09/2024 15:35

Take out a mortgage.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 17/09/2024 15:42

I don't think £75 is expensive for a wool coat.

newfriend05 · 17/09/2024 15:45

I just think clothing has got really expensive like everything else even primark , they PJs now are not much differently priced as M&S

RedVanYellowVan · 17/09/2024 15:47

Perhaps they are ensuring that the factory workers are getting a proper wage.

£10 t-shirts and the like are a clear indicator of underpaid labour.

AnnaMagnani · 17/09/2024 15:49

Topshop was never a cheap shop - I was a student in the 90s and never shopped there!

I've seen items I lusted after in Topshop on Vinted new with tags and the prices were high, even for then. The quality is also completely different to fast fashion today, there will be tailoring, linings, real silk.

ChokeToDeathOnThreePoundsOfMeat · 17/09/2024 15:51

We’ve been spoilt by years of ultra cheap clothing, a distressing amount of which was made in unsafe conditions in third world countries by kids that should be in school.

Clothes should be expensive. Then perhaps people would stop treating them as disposable.

GenAvocadoOnToast · 17/09/2024 15:53

inamarina · 17/09/2024 15:47

I just googled that coat because I also thought £75 is not too bad.
It only contains 2% wool though.
The rest is mostly polyester and acrylic.
Coat

They shouldn't be allowed to describe it as a wool coat when it only contains 2% wool. Increasingly brands are charging the earth for 98% polyester garments.

Yep, this

Completelyjo · 17/09/2024 15:56

Topshop as always expensive as a younger marketed high street store. I remember paying £45 and £49 for going out dresses 18 years ago.

modgepodge · 17/09/2024 15:59

I always thought topshop was expensive. I went from being too poor to shop there to too old to shop there😂

AdviceNeeded2024 · 17/09/2024 16:00

Ah I remember the Kate Moss range!! I do miss TopShop it was one of my favourites!

I do think it was always more on the expensive side but generally I think most of their stuff was decent quality. Seems now they are a tad more expensive with less quality. That cardigan seems expensive for what it is.

I’ve also noticed New Look seems to have gone up a lot for certain things, used to get blazers from there but they are usually £50+ now whereas a couple of years ago they were around £30. I appreciate costs to manufacture have probably gone up though.
