To not believe how expensive Topshop is?

So I grew up in the age of Topshop hype, when Kate Moss did a range that was like elite back then.

Obviously it declined hard, I stopped liking a lot of their stock. Now it’s on ASOS I absolutely love so much of their range but the price …

Almost £50 for a fluffy cardigan??

Topshop shop was always pricier, it was a 'couple of items a Christmas and birthdays' type shop! I remember in the early 00s with the pay from my first real job buying a lovely green wool coat from there and a tweed-ish pencil skirt. Both had really high amounts of wool in. The quality now is terrible and when they do open up actual shops again I won't be going as its just going to be a disappointment.

I've still got a really expensive designer collab jacket, a Kate Moss dress and waistcoat from 2001 Topshop. The stuff was mad expensive but looked a lot more so and hasn't massively dated. Now all I need to do is lose three stone and it will be phenomenal value for money in terms of pounds-per-wear 😝

I used to work there, the prices are pretty much in line allowing for inflation, they were never cheap. Yes quality has declined but that’s true for most fashion brands.

New2thisshizzle · 17/09/2024 16:08

Cost of materials, production, logistic, salaries etc has all gone up. Even in places that are cheap to manufacture

I always thought topshop was expensive. I went from being too poor to shop there to too old to shop there😂

Totally agree. It was a shop that made me feel both poor and uncool, despite having a Saturday job.

TopShop clothes were never particularly cheap or that well made. The one on Argyle Street in Glasgow did stock loads of Levis 501s though, and that's where I got mine before the Levis shop opened.

Jellybott · 17/09/2024 16:26

There's tons of their stuff on vinted in nearly new condition!

Suzuki70 · 17/09/2024 16:38

I could never afford Topshop prices (I was 16 in 2001). Their jeans were more than I earned at my Saturday job, at £40 for Moto flares and the boots were about £80.

I've some Jamie jeans from the ASOS Topshop range and they are better quality than ASOS version of skinnies from the same season (Ridley).

You had New Look and Dotty P's for cheap(ISH), Topshop/Miss Selfridge/Warehouse in the middle prices and Jane Norman/Miss Sixty at the top end.

They shouldn't be allowed to describe it as a wool coat when it only contains 2% wool. Increasingly brands are charging the earth for 98% polyester garments.

Agree. 2% is particularly ridiculous.

I was going to call you out because the 90s are def not 30 years ago.

Well now I feel old

Don’t be daft. The 70s were 30 years ago. The 90s were ten minutes ago.
