Went to a podiatry appointment today and was all ready for the minor surgery and the man randomly said ‘ so how much do you weigh roughly’ And then I told him I’m not sure exactly and then he tried to guess ‘about 10 stone?’ Aibu to think this is rude to guess my weight and my weight is no relevance to what I was having done

No its not rude, but he could have just weighed you. People always have weights taken for surgery appointments don't they?

viques · 16/09/2024 10:42

I think even for minor surgery weight is important. If you don’t know your own weight, and there wasn’t a scales available then he would have to estimate your weight. Not rude at all.

JMSA · 16/09/2024 10:44

Oh come on. It's not like he hazarded a guess at 18 stone. This is a non-issue, so move on from it.

Did he touch you OP? Medics do that. They also ask you relevant questions about what you may consider is only personal information. You should be aware of this for any future interaction. Or cut your own toenails.

I had partial nail avulsion.

I haven’t weighed myself in a while. Wasn’t expected to be asked though

I'd complain.
Outrageous.
And obviously there's people hanging around with nothing better to do than process this utter bollocks your entirely legitimate concern.

TrumpIsACuntWaffle · 16/09/2024 11:01

I'd chuffed as fuck if someone estimated 10 stone.
Get over yourself.

Same! I'd skip out of the bloody door at the end of the appointment! Catch yourself on OP, it's no big deal

bifurCAT · 16/09/2024 11:16

Need more tranqs to knock out an elephant. I know this is not the case here, but medical practitioners need to know weight for things, I'd imagine especially podiatry, as it's more weight on the affected appendage.

If you didn't know, he was either going to weigh you or make an educated guess.

I think you're just upset he verbalised it.

TheShellBeach · 16/09/2024 11:19

It's an essential question, even for minor surgery.
He should have weighed you, not guessed.

WhateverMate · 16/09/2024 11:22

Yeah he should've weighed you, but as he was guessing around 10 stone, there was probably no need.

And body weight can affect toenails and feet.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 16/09/2024 11:27

Unless he laughed and called you a fat cow or said you needed a sandwich...
He was asking a relevant question

Boidont · 16/09/2024 11:30

I had the same surgery when I was younger and they needed to know to know how much local anaesthetic to give me.

Psychologymam · 16/09/2024 11:31

Were you having any pain relief? Probably used to calculate that. It’s a non issue.

ThePrologue · 16/09/2024 11:47

Do you weigh more or less than 10sare you offended because he overestmated?

I actually weigh a bit more tbh. I just wasn’t expecting to be asked

OP posts:
WhateverMate · 16/09/2024 11:51

But how does you not expecting to be asked, equate to him being rude?

Su189 · 16/09/2024 11:51

He didn’t actually explain why he was asking

OP posts:
spanieleyes · 16/09/2024 12:02

Do you think he has a weight fetish?

Or perhaps he needs to know roughly for the anaesthetic?

WhateverMate · 16/09/2024 12:07

Su189 · 16/09/2024 11:51

He didn’t actually explain why he was asking

And you didn't ask him why he was asking 🤷‍♂️

But you must know weight is taken into account when pain relief is being used?

I should find it staggering how many posters seem to have missed the point of this thread. Then I remembered we’re on MN and the penny dropped.

Ok, what do you see as the point of the thread?

I see it as yet another patient aghast that a professional had the audacity to talk about their weight, in a completely appropriate setting.

Unless you think they should administer the same amount of drugs to everyone, regardless of their weight?
