To give my 12 year old decaf coffee?

SweetOneSizeFitsAll · 15/09/2024 20:42

DD likes the taste and smell of coffee. She has had a few sips or tea spoon full from my cup and has asked to drink coffee as a now and again treat. I'm not sure I should give her caffeinated coffee so have bought some decaf but my sil says I'm poisoning my tween.

What age do people start drinking normal coffee and AIBU to give dd decaf once a week?

The tanin in both tea and coffee prevents the absorption of iron from food, kids obviously need iron.
That’s why I didn’t give either to my kids.

Sepoctnov · 15/09/2024 22:16

Obsessive coffee drinker here but I would say it's unnecessary for a child but I'm in the minority here. Too much caffeine.

Just say, we enjoy lard too. Heeeeeee

Katemax82 · 15/09/2024 22:19

Poisoning? Ffs I've been drinking proper coffee since age 8

SleepToad · 15/09/2024 22:22

BurbageBrook · 15/09/2024 22:31

Of course it's fine! I used to have a cup of tea before school from around year 5 onwards. Coffee from around year 8!

JohnofWessex · 15/09/2024 22:44

Please please make sure its decent coffee, ie single estate beans ground at home and NEVER use boiling water to make it

Your SIL is talking nonsense. Just try to opt for a chemical free decaf. Good coffee has been proven time and time again to come with health benefits!

Same here.

TeaAndCakeFTW · 15/09/2024 23:01

Yanbu op children shouldn't be drinking coffee imo. It's disgusting seeing young teens walking around with coffee cups.

dinmin · 15/09/2024 21:28

Fine. So long as you are aware that there is still caffeine in decaf and are OK with that

I didn't know this.

Which ones are chemical free?

Perhaps look into it for yourself.

Here is a consumer report about it.

RedSoloCup · 15/09/2024 23:10

My 19 yo DD was drinking normal coffee from year7 maybe younger, younger two not really interested, I'm sure I drank it younger I'm not sure what the issue is? I don't allow energy drinks though ( well 19 yo can do as she pleases now obvs)!

milkysmum · 15/09/2024 23:10

It's coffee not crack. My 12 year old likes a coffee sometimes, maybe a couple of times a week. My 15 year old loves a daily iced latte.

What's Camp coffee?

Camp coffee is a concentrated coffee extract that was quite popular until about the 1960s, when real ground coffee was still considered quite bougie.

SIL says decaf is processed food and why would I give that to such a young child. Her dd drinks fruit tea, as apparently that's much better?

Fgs, what food or drink isn't 'processed'? Does she think milk goes into bottles directly from the cow, and water comes straight from some babbling brook somewhere?

Don't listen to people with eating disorders - and living your life according to unfounded fears about food is exactly that.

KenAdams · 15/09/2024 23:12

Mine had her first PSL today. A decaf but with the same amount of pumps of the syrup as usual (it's way too sweet for me). She doesn't want coffee, she wants sugar!

My Mum gave me fully caffinated milky coffee BEFORE BED!! from when I was about 5 as I loved the taste. She moans that of all her kids I was the worst sleeper. I kid you not….🤦🏼‍♀️🙈. A small mug of decaf will be fine!

Same lol, I had terrible issues sleeping

nomorezoflora · 15/09/2024 23:13

SweetOneSizeFitsAll · 15/09/2024 23:06

Which ones are chemical free?

No decaf coffee has any non-coffee chemicals in, no matter which way they've been processed to remove the caffeine. SIL is talking nonsense.

It's a brand of coffee concentrate made from chicory, water, sugar, and a little coffee.

spikeandbuffy · 15/09/2024 23:14

I was mainlining tea from about 10, not seeing it's an issue!

Why?! It's probably better for you than a can of Diet Coke and that's still got caffeine in

EngineEngineNumber9 · 15/09/2024 23:16

I drank homemade mochas at that age - half a spoon of instant coffee and a spoonful or two of hot chocolate powder. Sometimes with skooshy cream.
