To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

Like many other PPs, I wouldn't go back to Eygypt again, which is a shame, because there's more I'd have loved to see. And yet again, it was the vile attitude of too many of the men that would stop me and I had my ExP with me most of the time , but he didn't see some of the disrespect and leching. When he did, he had my back though to be fair to him and the creeps cowered like wretches- some of the staff in the hotel and one young man in a phone shop were the finest though. I also didn't like that I didn't see any women in jobs except for searching other women at the airport. In fact there seemed to be very few Egyptian women out and about in Sharm. Plus, the experience at the airport at Sharm on the way home was awful- I accept they had to have tight security but the amount of times we had to show our passports when we'd literally just shown them to an official about a minute before was insane. A stressful experience.
Now, not only would I not go to any country where women are harassed and discriminated against like that, I would also not go to a country where Christians are discriminated against, oppressed or persecuted either. This now includes the Holy Land and I can only pray for peace there. For ALL who live there!

@moodiemoo

What is it about Tunisia in particular that has so many people visiting?

Yes I want to know this too. It's hot there, so perhaps attracts sunseekers at points in the year where it's cold in Northern countries

TheaBrandt · 16/09/2024 14:54

Yes Vergus I travelled to Egypt as a naive twenty something didn’t realise how bad it was until I got there.

Sadly have had to strongly advise my dds that whole swathes of the world are out of bounds to them simply because they are young women. Which is very sad.

Wales.

Got screamed at on a beach because their dog wanted our lunch. We weren’t near the dog, they just couldn’t control it. So they screamed at us for having food and daring to eat it.

Same holiday, got served “home made” soup multiple times in multiple establishments that was clearly from a packet. Complete with shrivelled dehydrated peas.

Awful holiday.

The whole of Wales. 😂

@TroysMammy

Glangwesyn, Abergwesyn, Powys.

So not all of Wales then. You wouldn't get attitudes like that in Swansea.

Vergus · 16/09/2024 15:00

Also - everyone I know (and I do mean everyone - work colleagues, friends) who have been to either Turkey or Egypt have recounted coming down with a tummy bug of epic proportions. Without exception.

Toomanysquishmallows · 16/09/2024 15:02

i have family members who visited Tunisia , because they offered cheap all inclusive holidays .

Qatar is a strict country all right, I lived and worked there for three and a half years employed in a government operated organisation. It was not a nice or easy place to work, ridiculous long hours, and the clients were rude and aggressive. I got burned out and frazzled and just before leaving, de-mob happy and feeling carefree, told a (European) client where to go in a way that's rude but not illegal in the UK. Think "you and your boss can get stuffed" but with stronger language. His boss was a high-level Qatari.

I was arrested, detained, released on bail with no conditions thanks to the intervention of my boss, another well-connected Qatari, got the hell out of there. If I ever go back, there's a prison sentence and huge fine waiting for me. That strictness can cut both ways.

Wow

Lentilweaver · 16/09/2024 15:08

Well people complain about tummy bugs in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam,, Turkey...any country that is not European. Personally I dislike European food and only like spicy flavourful food, so sampling these cuisines is one of the reasons I travel. I also like street food far more than Michelin star and five stars.

Horses, courses etc. I am rarely ill perhaps because I eat that kind of food daily.

The comments about North Wales being anti-English are hilarious. Most people open their mouths and sound like they come from Liverpool (or at least the Wirral).

I had a great experience in a teashop in Denbigh where the ladies who ran it were talking Welsh to themselves and then English, with a light scouse accent, to us.

If people with English accents have a bad experience in (North) Wales they are inviting it, in my opinion. It's a great place to visit.

As for Brexit, the Welsh voted for it (and people from the likes of Manchester and Liverpool, who often go to North Wales for holidays, or at least short breaks) did not. That was turkeys voting for Christmas (see also Kent, Cornwall and, to some extent, Northern Ireland which was nowhere near as pro-remain as Scotland was).

So you think having a drink in a pub in Wales and speaking English means we are inviting to be attacked What the actual fuck

So folks, now you know. Don't speak English in Wales as you are inviting them to attack you

ChampagneLassie · 16/09/2024 15:14

Marrakesh - terrible service, and getting hassled in the street and just not nice at all. However we also visited Essouera and it was totally different so I wouldn’t rule out returning to Morocco, just not Marrakesh

Yes their immigration staff are really unfriendly! I know immigration staff are hardly ever chatty but they seem very unwelcoming.

I go every year, so they trust I am going to go home and they are fine 😆

Don't be ridiculous! Most of us in south Wales only speak English. I never even got taught Welsh in school. And no one I know around here would attack someone for having an English accent.

But according to Sharpclawedkitten I invited being attacked because I was speaking English in a Welsh pub

And yes I know it is different in South Wales, lovely place lovely people, spent a lot of time there. Just had the misfortune to venture into North Wales

I agree. I think that you should stay at home. nods

You can keep your midgets, I was bitten all over my arms and legs and had to use aloe vera cream for weeks after getting back. We used to get them in England back in the 70s and 80s but for some reason not so much now they have all moved to Scotland

Jordan is somewhere I'd like to go in the future. Has anyone had any negative experiences there?

I had some pervy guides who stopped when I was firm with telling them off. But overall my time was brief but fine. I was only there for 2 days one night visiting Petra.

@InWalksBarberalla

England. The countryside is quite pretty and the historical sites are interesting. But it's just so grey and grimy and the people are miserable.

We like to be miserable - particularly about the weather. It's a cultural thing. At least you won't get stoned here for not wearing a head-covering if you're a woman, and our laws advocate fairness, gender equality and respect in line with human rights legislation. But each to their own.

You maybe attacked for wearing a head covering though.

Where are you from? If every major city in UK you visited look like pig sty to you, you must be from a perfect country.

Wonder if she can even understand us though, what with all of our squealing while rooting around in the mud.

I too would like to know what perfect utopia she comes from 🤔

Middle East (UAE). I went with my young son who was terrified of the women wearing metal masks over their hijabs. I am not sure what those are called actually, but he was haunted by them. I was haunted by the fact that they were walking a few metres behind their husbands always - carrying bags and small children. Just chattel. I then decided that I would never return to that part of the world. I have travelled all over the world but it was horrifying - and those are the more liberal parts!

We have these in Oxford now. I saw a group in the market. Very unsettling.

San Francisco

Egypt/Red Sea - but only becasue of the shark attacks and the way they are encouraged.

Can you elaborate on San Francisco? I have never been there but want to visit.

Also, have you been to LA?

None of what you say answers my question. As I am brown, quite a lot of my extended family live in countries that don't treat women well. Not much choice in the matter if I want to see them. The luxury to travel only in Europe is afforded mostly to native Europeans with close knit families no?

Also it's not quite as black and white as you think. As I said my female relatives in India can get abortions. Those in the US can't or find it hard. And yet the general wisdom is that the US treats women as equal citizens.

It all depends. In day to day life US has more equality than India. But when shit hits the fan and you need abortion, you may find India better. Not that an Indian single woman will be treated with genuine respect for being pregnant or having abortion.
There is still an expectation of women to live with in laws in today's day and age, but not of men. Of course, there are exceptions.

I'd like to hear too. I haven't been to SF for 15 years but I loved it then. It was a fascinating city and I always felt safe. I've heard how things have gone bad there but not direct from someone who's been.
It's such a shame it's gone downhill.
