To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

I've been to almost 50 countries, some of them multiple times.
A little surprised by some of the comments!

For me the worst places were:

  • Greece. Been multiple times and find some of the locals so so rude.
  • Amsterdam. Again rude people, drug and smoking people. Where are the toilets?
  • Belgium's lack of toilets.
  • Dubai - agree with all comments above.
  • Egypt - was there with security and wouldn't go again unless with security again.
  • Stockholm. Again rude people everywhere and where are the toilets?

The most outstanding country by a mile was Switzerland.

@Pigeonqueen I don't like Switzerland much either and I've been quite a few times with work things over the years, including about 10 months ago , very expensive, dull, mediocre , often surly poor service and very keen on shutting for several hours at lunch etc- nice scenery and obviously good skiing and Zurich's reasonably attractive and ordered but on the whole I wouldn't rush back -

I have visited many countries, but really didn’t like Switzerland. Ridiculously expensive and boring

Yes their immigration staff are really unfriendly! I know immigration staff are hardly ever chatty but they seem very unwelcoming.

I went through US immigration yesterday in less than 10 minutes and border guard or whatever they’re called, was lovely. Maybe they’re having a charm offensive?

If I had to chose a country I’d say France. Or Romania. Or Slovakia.

Osaka, Japan. Sexually assaulted by local man. Police didn’t give a shit.

Felt dreadfully unsafe the whole time, being perved at by men. The misogyny in Japan is like nothing I had ever experienced before, despite being well travelled.

Never ever going back.

Wow I’m shocked by that

Solotwo · 15/09/2024 23:21

Pepperama · 15/09/2024 21:42

UAE and Saudi - same as everyone
Texas
Canaries - not my kind of landscape and overly touristy
Brussels and Amsterdam - both felt seedy, dirty (rest of the country is lovely though)
South Africa - felt really unsafe in Jo’burg
Thailand - bad experience I wouldn’t want to repeat
Much of Northern Africa - which is a shame as it’s beautiful and I have met lovely lovely people there when I worked there for a bit, but as a tourist it’s a nightmare

Yes hated Amsterdam. Dirty seedy place with drugs being sold on street corners.

I've had similar experiences with unfriendly behaviour and also experienced racism there

Italy is very racist.

You see it in football stadiums.

As for Rome, "stab city" (away fans get knifed..hence they have to be escorted by police when they leave the stadium, an hour after all the home fans have left).

Stunning culture though.

There is no city on Earth that matches Rome for culture (London imo is probably the best for contemporary culture, but for historic landmarks its Rome).

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 23:24

@Harry12345 my H has been 3 times with work with bands and I was going to go with him next time but after he insisted on giving me an etiquette/manners thing on Japanese culture and when you can speak or stay quiet , wait to be poured a drink and basically 'men as a priority' if you go out in mixed groups --- I won't be bothering.

was going to take DD14 to Amsterdam for her birthday but if it’s like that I’m not sure I will….

PeloMom · 15/09/2024 23:26

Ive travelled quite a bit and the only place I wouldn’t go back to isn’t a country but an island- Formentera. Everyone was highly recommending it so I decided to do a day trip from Ibiza. There is NOTHING there. We drove from end to end - takes less than 30 mins; came across few restaurants and a hotel but I wouldn’t go back.

Spain. Way too hot. They also hate tourists.

Not my experience whatsoever. Have always felt very welcome in Spain.

ImNotTheMatix · 15/09/2024 23:27

Wales. They are racist to the English. Stopped speaking English and started speaking Welsh in lots of shops and restaurants. Got turned away from empty restaurants saying they were booked up, because I was English.
Tunisia. Got touched up in the markets in Tunis. The hotel resort had armed guards and we were warned not to travel too far out of the resort. Terrible treatment of donkeys on an overnight trip into the Sahara.
Egypt. Dirty and expensive, got ripped off for being English. Armed guards on the hotel doors. Felt very threatened walking round local shops.
Florida- too hot, too expensive, kids wanted to be in the villa pool rather than at all the theme parks we’d paid hundreds for the tickets. Overrated.

Wales - in particular Aberystwith.

Drab, miserable and couldn't wait to get back home.

Grannyinnwaiting · 15/09/2024 23:30

Morocco - been incredibly sick on return home both times

@SailingOnAWave plenty of toilets maybe ? I hate Switzerland - dull and expensive and rude as hell.

Have to Totally disagree about Greece or Stockholm- and I know both really well- swedes aren't arselickers though - maybe you like that kind of service - I wouldn't say it's rudeness more matter of fact ness- Dutch very blunt too -

Maybe it's you !

US immigration staff are notoriously awful

I had two unbelievably long waits at LAX immigration last year - made the mistake of using the city as a hub for my travels. But the staff were all lovely. They asked way more questions than I've been asked at any other border but they were unflinchingly polite in that way Americans are famous for. All 'yes Ma'am' and whatnot.

LBFseBrom · 15/09/2024 23:33

Ireland. Boring and wet.

If you re-read my post I didn’t say I felt unsafe in the Caribbean. The hotel staff told us not to venture out due to the crime. I felt uncomfortable being in a luxury hotel next to people living in poverty. Not unsafe.

It was Jamaica.

My ex MIL is Jamaican, born there and has family there. They came to visit her in the hotel last time she visted as it wasnt safe for her to to leave the resort. As a woman who lives and worked in the UK she was seen as rich and would be targeted. Her family is well known (for good reasons!) in the the capital so her name would immediately flag her up, quite apart from her clothes and accent etc. My DD would be very unwise to visit, she would be a kidnap risk, at least thats what we were told 15 years ago due to her name and the fact that she is half white European. We are, by their standards, rich.

The only time exH went he was 15 which is nearly 45 years ago, and although they did stay with family, his mother arranged for two yardies to act as armed body guards while they were there.

I personally dont see the point in spending thousands and travelling so far just to be hot by a pool when I can do that for a lot less in Europe. If I go somewhere its because I want to see the place I am in. DD has already said that she will never visit the Caribbean as her grandmother has put the fear of god into her about it, and for good reason.

I love Amsterdam. There are lots of nice bits, great museums and Anne Frank house is so moving and interesting. The canals are lovely to walk round. I went with my Mum and we had a fabulous time. Yes there are seedy bits - but you can easily avoid those if you know where they are. We didn’t tend to stay out that late and found it a lovely place to visit, we didn’t see any of the drugs / prostitution etc people talk about.

I took my DD16 and her friend to Amsterdam last year as a post GCSE celebration and we all loved it.

We stayed in a lodge 10 minutes outside Amsterdam (so weren't really there at night) but the canals were beautiful, the shopping was great, the food was good (recommend Foodhallen).

Would say it would be a nice trip for her birthday

Thanks. I was genuinely interested because I assumed if your hotel said not to venture out due to crime it would also mean people felt unsafe. Apologies if I came across badly. I recently changed my mind about wanting to go to Jamaica. The crime rate appears to be growing which puts me off now.

Ap42 · 15/09/2024 23:50

Singapore, found people so unfriendly and incredibly rude. From locals to hotel staff. Never met such a frosty bunch of people.
India, I have never been so ill. It was great for my waistline though. It can be a very depressing country with the amount of poverty and a real culture shock. I wouldn't return.
