To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

Belgium. Overpriced, grasping and boring as fuck.

I can understand where you're coming from. I had a similar experience and found Belgium to be quite disappointing in terms of value and excitement.

Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union.

They done exist any more

Anywhere and everywhere in the USA. It's literally third world!

It literally isn't.

When will people actually learn what literally means? Does my head in.

I'm literally by your side on this one!

The US. It’s overhyped as a destination and certainly not worth dealing with the aggressive staff at the immigration counters.

US immigration staff are notoriously awful

moodiemoo · 15/09/2024 22:55

US cities I don’t rate but I don’t rate cities in general, but to slag off the entire country is incredible considering how vast and varied and beautiful the many national parks are, for example.

Moldova
Serbia
Burkina Faso
Gabon

Interesting you put Serbia. I went to visit a friend there before heading to Montenegro and had a phenomenal time. Nightlife was amazing, food great and people were so welcoming.

Some parts of the US. Too bloody trigger-happy.

Being in the supermarket checkout queue and noticing that the couple in front are both carrying weapons in their belts can be a bit disconcerting!

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 22:56

@Pigeonqueen I don't like Switzerland much either and I've been quite a few times with work things over the years, including about 10 months ago , very expensive, dull, mediocre , often surly poor service and very keen on shutting for several hours at lunch etc- nice scenery and obviously good skiing and Zurich's reasonably attractive and ordered but on the whole I wouldn't rush back -

USA and Dubai. Spent quite a lot of time in both. No more thanks.

Re USA - you have not spent time in the right places, then. Unless you are not white, in which case I know your experiences will be very different to mine.

travelcat · 15/09/2024 22:59

Wales. Ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough, sinewy men roam the Valleys, terrorising people with their close-harmony singing

I had a challenging experience there myself, including some racism, which definitely affected how I feel about the place. It wasn't a positive experience for me either.

Tunisia, hassled by men the whole time

Australia, too far away, racist, fairly dull

Israel

I'd go back anywhere else though

You would think Israel would be super developed and comfortable but a few have said they wouldn't go back. Do you mind me asking what you didn't like?

I would like to see the sites in which Jesus' life played out but it seems very expensive.

Pipecleanerrevival · 15/09/2024 22:48

Morocco -horrible atmosphere in Casablanca, people unfriendly unless they thought they could get money off you. Men staring.
Barbados - run down and dirty. Saw a women being followed by a group of men catcalling and making lewd comments
Czechia - people openly racist and I felt unsafe

however I really liked Belgium, Netherlands and Israel and would happily return to any of those places in times of peace.

If you thought Barbados was bad, never go to Jamaica or the Dominican!

I was expecting a lot when I went to Barbados but I just don’t get what all the fuss is about. It was ok but just like Mauritius, overhyped

CeruleanBelt · 15/09/2024 23:05

I can't see myself going back to Paris.

Visited with a very pretty blonde friend and she was constantly harassed by gross men trying to touch her and chat her up. They didn't want to take no for an answer. We had some French guy try and tell us off for not speaking French. He said we should be speaking in his language in his country, even when we were talking amongst ourselves. He was really aggressive about it.

Plus Paris itself is filthy, smelly, overcrowded and expensive.

wonderfulcopenhagen · 15/09/2024 23:06

Cape Verde. Nothing really there except for the resorts
If you only go to Sal which is a desolate sandpit then yes. Some of the other islands are lush and there is some good walking.

USA has some amazing scenery but the politics, drugs issue, bad food and awful towns put me off. Las Vegas is dreadful.

Someone mentioned Oman - we had a good trip there, epic scenery in one part, forts, culture etc. You do have to get out of the capital. Whereas UAE is devoid of any charm whatsoever.

The Gambia is not inspiring. There are much more interesting countries to visit in Africa.

I hit post but nothing happens, so hit it again and then two posts appear.

Thanks for that, thought I had a bad case of deja vu!

Yep, similar experience here.

I enjoyed the art galleries but that was about it.

I had hoped Marseille had changed. Visited over 40 years ago. It's beautiful down in the harbour but walk a few hundred yards and it was a slum. Fortunately we were only there for 1 night but we did leave at 6.00 in the morning we hated it so much

I loved our brief time in Marseille! Our rustic hotel in the Vieux-Port was beautiful and the people we met were friendly. We strolled around the harbour in the sunshine, acquiesced to the locals’ recommendation that we must take the little tourist train up to the cathedral and later, we found a great perfume shop in the outskirts where I tried on Jean Patou’s Joy.

I admit that the city was a bit edgy. Emergency sirens wailed day and night and once as we returned to our hotel, we saw about 20 police officers standing outside a nearby building preparing to launch a raid.

Barbados. For all the hype, I found it quite underwhelming ☹️.

Too many English people in Barbados. It was just like being at home but with a better climate. Very underwhelming
Other Caribbean Islands such as St Lucia are more beautiful

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 23:10

@NonsuchCastle got to admit California is one of my favourite hols- we've been 4 times now - Laguna, Santa Barbara - love it!! I like LA too but I'm just really specific- we stay in West Hollywood or laurel canyon , walk in that sunset and Melrose Ave area or use the car, drive to studio city area or Griifiths park or the Grove or Santa Monica or Burbank or Pasadena etc - I stick to really specific areas all the time and specific places.

I think plenty of US is awful- land of freeways and strip malls - but lots of it can be a great holiday too -my H really liked Chicago and Milwaukee too and Austin, Texas and phoenix etc -

Drinkdrinkduuurink · 15/09/2024 23:11

I haven't been to New York City, but I have no real desire to as the twin towers was such an iconic part of the skyline I think its lost something.

My brother was on the top of one of them earlier in the year they were destroyed and I'm forever envious of him.

As much as I loved my first visit to London, there is one elephant in the room. What on earth have they done to Big Ben? Looks like a big cheese slice around the clock face. You don't change an iconic landmark regardless of "that's how it looked 150 years ago". When it was built the statue of liberty was a different colour than it is now, with the weather changing the tint....you don't see it being "restored to it's original colour".

Idiots!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/09/2024 23:11

Thailand. Not because I didn’t like it, but I just had a strong sense of what could go wrong, and don’t want to roll the dice again.

I didn’t get up to anything dodgy but equally I don’t think that was a guarantee of no problems.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/09/2024 23:13

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/09/2024 22:24

Thailand. I know most people love it but I felt a sleazy/sinister undercurrent everywhere

Ditto

Also Scotland - I've travelled all over the world and have never encountered widespread rudeness like it

We’ve just come back from Scotland. I was absolutely blown away by how really lovely almost every single person I met was. Genuinely.

What on earth would anyone go to Dubai? By its very definition (not really being there until very recently) it has zero culture. And it has an appalling attitude to Westerners. What kind of holiday is that?

Seems to be one that some people go to every year. I don’t get it either.

travelcat · 15/09/2024 23:15

Italy. Found the people quite unfriendly each time I have visited.

I've had similar experiences with unfriendly behaviour and also experienced racism there
