To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

Brussels is grey and grimy but have had some lovely holidays elsewhere in Belgium.

San Francisco. So many homeless people in the street. Constant smell of urine in the centre.

Río was awful. Absolutely stunning but so much hassle. We'd arrived from Argentina which was lovely and safe to suddenly be surrounded by people constantly try to get you to buy stuff.

Flossflower · 15/09/2024 22:22

I didn’t like Costa Rica. Yes the national parks were lovely but the capital San Jose was very busy. The traffic jams from the airport were awful and the trucks gave out the most terrible fumes. They were clearly not monitored. Carbon neutral my foot!
Most of the towns and places were very dusty if they were anywhere near a road.
I agree with a lot of the comments here though I love Wales for walking. I liked South Africa and India but in India we visited with a driver and a guide. We only ventured out on our own a couple of times. I am an old woman and I usually holiday with my husband. Times have not changed because I remember being touched/groped by men in the same countries mentioned here when I was in my youth.
I have never been to Dubai and I don’t think I ever will.

My friend has just returend from a month in Vietnam - her second visit as she loves the country so much, and plans to go again. Her experiences, and the photos I saw, very much contradict your experience. Everyone I know who has been there raves about it.

Well here we go, different people have different tastes, the question was which country would we, as a person, never go back to based on our experiences. DH felt exactly like me about Vietnam and he loves travelling. I certainly didn't expect to hate it, even though some landscapes are breathtaking.
In the same way, I love a lot of countries quoted in the posts! Including Marseille which I find to be a joyful chaos (but yes, not the cleanest).

I would LOVE to see you try to cuddle a roo 🤣🤣

Well a joey obviously, not going near the adults, they're a bit big! I should have made that clear😂

Drawahardline · 15/09/2024 21:50

I was just going to say I’m not sure they’d cooperate Grin

Also Koalas are not actually particularly impressed with cuddles 😆

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/09/2024 22:24

Thailand. I know most people love it but I felt a sleazy/sinister undercurrent everywhere

Ditto

Also Scotland - I've travelled all over the world and have never encountered widespread rudeness like it

Flandango · 15/09/2024 22:25

Wales. Ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough, sinewy men roam the Valleys, terrorising people with their close-harmony singing

CJsGoldfish · 15/09/2024 22:25

The "they're eating the dogs" US
I just can't.
Yes, I know that not everybody is as stupid as those who support the orange twat or sleep with their guns. I know many, many lovely Americans but I just wouldn't return there after how backwards it's gotten. Not even for the cheap Disneyworld holibobs that are all the rage 🤷‍♀️

Damn (I keep double posting).

I hit post but nothing happens, so hit it again and then two posts appear.

Nothing to do with your username…? 😜

Misogyny and harassment are a bit of a theme.

It would be interesting to hear men's answers to the same question. Their experiences are so different.

A male friend of mine says he wouldn’t go back to Tunisia due to the constant hassle. It was mostly from traders/touts, but he was also pestered by a rent boy when he was trying to relax on a beach. The rent boy started massaging his back and was very persistent.

HandShoe · 15/09/2024 22:26

Egypt - same as previous posters. Sexually harassed and assaulted by men.

DreamTheMoors · 15/09/2024 22:14

Mexico - not ever.
I flew to San Diego to visit my cousin one Easter and she and her friends decided we should go down into Mexico to Ensenada and have dinner. Sounded like fun.
We had drinks at the Rosirito Beach Hotel - a hangout for college kids (which we weren’t) and afterwards, we headed to the car.
When I got outside — I blinked once, twice — no car. My cousin and her friends had left me. They actually ditched me.
There were two Mexican police officers standing there and I described the group & the car and asked if they’d seen them. They said yes & to “go with them.”
Insteaf of taking me anywhere near civilization, they took me deeper & deeper into Mexico and finally let me out at some random cafe/bar.
On the way, they tossed a huge bag of weed at me & some papers & demanded that I roll a joint.
I couldn’t, because I don’t know how to roll a joint.
I had to hitchhike 85+ miles back to San Diego with complete strangers.
It was terrifying.
The police in Mexico don’t give a rat’s ass about serving the public.
The gangs and cartels are out of control.
I’ll never set foot in Mexico again.
And my cousin? She thought it was funny.
I still fail to see the humour.

What a horrific thing to do to you, you could have been in serious danger.

Shecan · 15/09/2024 22:26

Turkey - Marmaris - lovely hotel with great staff but was hassled at every step once we left the hotel grounds. It was relentless and often insulting.

Mexico - Again lovely hotel and staff were excellent, but felt unsafe leaving the complex, was in a car crash because the driver was watching a tablet, then just abandoned us in the middle of the night. And there was an attempt to scam us in a shop.

Combattingthemoaners · 15/09/2024 22:27

Another one for Egypt. Was harassed all week by men.

Loonaandalf · 15/09/2024 22:28

Tunisia for same reasons people above gave, grabby, gross leery men

and probably Malta as it was just a disappointment- Gozo island was nice though

Scentedjasmin · 15/09/2024 22:28

Tunisia. Went once many moons ago. Got mollestered. Food was also terrible in the hotel, but even more unhygienic in local restaurants. Lots of litter. Men generally very misogynistic and disrespectful.

Ugh yeah I’d forgotten about Lanzarote! Same, cockroaches and hot but weirdly windy, but that might’ve been just unlucky with the weather.

Yes same with Lanzarote and that odd wind. I never burn myself and am
usually careful but as it was only 20 I went with factor 15 and to this day I have bloody freckly shins from burning them in Lanzarote. Bit boring too 😏

Is it something about solo travel that makes a difference? I loved Egypt (multiple times) Morocco, India, South Africa (twice - tho once on my own), New York (twice). Enjoyed all of them - so interesting.
I"'d also love to return to Russia, and to Jerusalem, but they look unlikely for the forseeable, for political reasons.
Been to Dubai a couple of times, but I probably wouldn't go back.
I really can't say there's any country I absolutely hated - I don't think you can judge a whole country on a few days in just one or two places.

I’d agree (apart from there being nowhere I hated, as above). I’ve been to several of the countries in the first sentence of your post and loved them. I think some of it is an attitude or an approach to different cultures thing, people trying to sell you something or ask you to come to their restaurant is seen as harassment when it isn’t - I’ve always found a “No, thanks” with a smile and walking away means they leave you alone. I absolutely don’t recognise the description of India and Morocco, even as a solo female traveller.

Reading all the appalling stories on this thread, someone needs to start up a country with no men.

Yes, I think you've pretty much nailed it

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/09/2024 22:31

Belgium. Overpriced, grasping and boring as fuck.

CuttySarcasm · 15/09/2024 22:33

I'm surprised people don't like Egypt, I travelled around and did Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Mt Sanai, Dahab, Abu Simbel, we also did a few days on a boat down the nile, and I found it fascinating and the people friendly. But we were with a Local male guide in a group the whole time, so I guess we got left alone. I also loved India and Mexico, which have cropped up on this thread.

I do agree on the US, homelessness, severe mental health issues and drug addicts are far worse than I the UK, huge tent cities, with human poo on the pavements. Immigration and airport staff so unbelievably unfriendly, I felt like it was racist against any one who was non US!

Gambia I hated, there was nothing to do, I felt on edge the whole time, and the sex tourism was grim.

New York in summer. Awful, dirty, feet sticking to the pavement with fizzy drinks spilt everywhere and rubbish. Vile smells, homeless people sleeping in the subway in their urine, and everyone is trying to rip you off. Hailed a taxi cab, asked how much to get to a concert in NJ, the answer came - so much for the ride, so much for the toll and 30 dollar tip - yes, seriously, the taxi driver said that. Restaurants adding tips on top of service charge, inedible food. Absolutely vile, and even dirty toilets in the Plaza, which was such a disappointment for my dc, as they love Eloise!

I go to NYC every year in summer. I don't use the subway and I stay away from Midtown. I usually stay in the West Village and it's gorgeous. People are very friendly to me.
