To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

Malta. I had pretty bad morning sickness and a constant sense of nausea and found the food to be quite peculiar but maybe it was just me! It was kind of like Italian food but not as nice.

Farmhouse1234 · 15/09/2024 22:12

Dubai, boring. Marrakesh - just prefer other parts of Morocco. Don’t like the city.

Mynewnameis · 15/09/2024 22:13

Tunisia, especially Sousse

AbbeyGrange · 15/09/2024 22:13

Thailand, Israel and Domincan Republic, I've been to all three and I hate them all for different reasons. I never got the hype about Australia either, it's ok but nothing special..

Yes their immigration staff are really unfriendly! I know immigration staff are hardly ever chatty but they seem very unwelcoming.

I recall having a horrible experience with US immigration staff at JFK airport. My child was young at the time and was absolutely terrified

When did you all go to Tunisia ? I went when I was 20 as a solo traveller and stayed for 3 weeks, I never ever had any problem being harassed or men coming onto me. I wore a scarf on my head and long sleeves/long trousers though, maybe that saved me from it?
But yeah, no issue and I was alone everywhere, and we're not speaking nice hotels here but hostels on the suburbs of Tunis and Tunis itself. quite unsafe when I read about your experiences actually!

The only country I genuinely hated was Vietnam. Everyone I met was rude and horrible. It was awfully dirty and I am used to big bustling Asian cities, but this was just terrible, and not in a cool exotic kind of way. The pollution was so thick it burned my.mouth, I felt sorry for the locals living in this smoke. I had an amazing experience in neighbouring Myanmar and Thailand.

I will never set a foot in Vietnam anymore.

My friend has just returend from a month in Vietnam - her second visit as she loves the country so much, and plans to go again. Her experiences, and the photos I saw, very much contradict your experience. Everyone I know who has been there raves about it.

Mexico - not ever.
I flew to San Diego to visit my cousin one Easter and she and her friends decided we should go down into Mexico to Ensenada and have dinner. Sounded like fun.
We had drinks at the Rosirito Beach Hotel - a hangout for college kids (which we weren’t) and afterwards, we headed to the car.
When I got outside — I blinked once, twice — no car. My cousin and her friends had left me. They actually ditched me.
There were two Mexican police officers standing there and I described the group & the car and asked if they’d seen them. They said yes & to “go with them.”
Insteaf of taking me anywhere near civilization, they took me deeper & deeper into Mexico and finally let me out at some random cafe/bar.
On the way, they tossed a huge bag of weed at me & some papers & demanded that I roll a joint.
I couldn’t, because I don’t know how to roll a joint.
I had to hitchhike 85+ miles back to San Diego with complete strangers.
It was terrifying.
The police in Mexico don’t give a rat’s ass about serving the public.
The gangs and cartels are out of control.
I’ll never set foot in Mexico again.
And my cousin? She thought it was funny.
I still fail to see the humour.

Anywhere and everywhere in the USA. It's literally third world! The amount of poverty, homelessness and drug addiction is terrifying and single use plastic is on a level I have never seen.

The poverty there is astonishing.

I was reminded recently just how bad it is there when 1984 gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton had to beg via GoFundMe to pay her medical needs.

Stanley Edmunde Brock (April 21, 1936 – August 29, 2018) was a British philanthropist, presenter, actor and author who founded the charity Remote Area Medical in 1985. Critical of healthcare in the US, The Independent states his work rescued millions of uninsured Americans.

"Founded by British philanthropist Stan Brock, it was originally conceived to treat people in the developing world, but turned its attention to those in need of health care in the United States".

The Fetanyl issue is also shocking.

Turkey - shithole.
Israel - loved it and will go back again.

I've been to both India and Morocco in the last year and don't recognise these descriptions (with the exception of central Marrakech where locals absolutely see tourists as cash cows) Further out of the city in Marrakech and Fes we were fine walking out and going for dinner.
I wonder if it's because I was in a mixed sex group both times, or had a local guide?

The only place I've really disliked was Marseille. I generally like France but Marseille was awful - unfriendly, dull and busy.

I had hoped Marseille had changed. Visited over 40 years ago. It's beautiful down in the harbour but walk a few hundred yards and it was a slum. Fortunately we were only there for 1 night but we did leave at 6.00 in the morning we hated it so much

Drinkdrinkduuurink · 15/09/2024 22:16

Damn (I keep double posting).

I hit post but nothing happens, so hit it again and then two posts appear.

Paetina · 15/09/2024 22:16

Egypt - didn't hate it all (enjoyed Mt Sinai/St Catherine's monastery and a beach camp in Nuweiba) but, overall, probably wouldn't go back .

Turkey and Morrocco- overall great experience. Would recommend them and would go back but would avoid some places (e.g. Casablanca).

Edit- typo.

hattie43 · 15/09/2024 22:17

Bahrain .

You could feel the oppression. Never been anywhere as awful .

Deliiciousllydifffident · 15/09/2024 22:18

Egypt. They are cruel to horses and I hating the begging.

justasmalltownmum · 15/09/2024 22:18

Barcelona & Marrakesh.

Misogyny and harassment are a bit of a theme.

It would be interesting to hear men's answers to the same question. Their experiences are so different.

I always used to say this while watching any of Michael Palin's travel series. I used to shout at the television "try doing that as a woman!" All of the warm and friendly welcoming men (women firmly in the background) in developing countries. It's a different planet for women.

betterangels · 15/09/2024 22:19

America. I've been to several different places there. It's just not worth it.

SantoriniSunrise · 15/09/2024 22:19

Hungary - Budapest another one, all I remember really is going to one of those baths/saunas which seemed really unhygienic. Beautiful building though. Also food not great.

CharlotteLightandDark · 15/09/2024 22:19

Dubai was awful, hated it. The embodiment of more money than sense. Wouldn’t go back.

I had a good time in Marrakech but wouldn’t be bothered about going back, would like to see more of Morocco though.

hattie43 · 15/09/2024 22:19

Oh and Jamaica. Never again , had a very lucky escape from being robbed and stabbed on a trip to the falls and waiting at the airport for the flight home we bumped into a couple weeks ago met on the way out . The guy had been stabbed and spent the entire two weeks in hospital.

moodiemoo · 15/09/2024 22:20

I would unfortunately not visit a developing country due to all of the above experiences. In terms of places I have visited:

Las Vegas - grim unnatural tacky
LA - not glamorous at all
Osaka - not my vibe at all, feels run down in comparison with the rest of Japan (I love Tokyo)
London - dirty, so many people aggressively begging
Leeds - mini London see above

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 22:21

@RedHelenB I understand why you said 'wow' but have to be honest I would feel the same- and it's one reason I wouldn't go to India -

BlackForestCake · 15/09/2024 22:21

In contrast to the stereotype, I found New Yorkers friendly and very polite. I probably won't go to the US again but that's down to disliking long haul flights.

JaffavsCookie · 15/09/2024 22:21

Dubai, for same reasons as many pp
USA, overhyped, why would I bother ( have been to a number of different states over the years)
wales - got spat at in the street for not speaking welsh, literally my only sin.

standardmum · 15/09/2024 22:22

RainbowColouredRainbows · 15/09/2024 21:59

Czech Republic. It was so dirty and I felt so unsafe. We were in Prague and just got so bored, we literally left and took the bus over to Germany after 1 day for the rest of the holiday.
Malta as well is not worth the money getting there. Very meh.
I love Italy but I'd never go back to Rome again. I just felt like I spent the entire trip beating off scammers and I remember a lucky lucky man yelling at me for not buying some of his sunglasses. It was tiresome.

Really? Prague is generally rated as one of the safest cities in the world with statistics to back it up!
