And Keir Starmer should have paid himself for his 'several pairs of glasses' and £19K worth of work clothes? On top of that there was £20K for accommodation for Sir Keir and another 'similar sum' on 'private office' costs.

Purely by coincidence, it seems the donor was given a Downing Street security pass allowing easy access to the corridors of power without any role in government.

And yes, Carrie and Boris Johnson should have paid for their wallpaper and hampers too, that is just as sleazy.

Sir Keir Starmer faces investigation over possible breach of parliamentary rules after Labour donor 'pays for wife's clothes'

A Labour peer paid for a personal shopper, clothes and alterations for Lady Starmer, both before and after the Labour leader became prime minister in July, according to The Sunday Times. But Labour said they have contacted authorities over the matter.

Oh yes I agree, except that they did say they’d be different….

If you are going to take the moral high ground, it’s best to be whiter than white yourself in your conduct. And to give Angela her credit, she did at least declare everything in the appropriate timeframe, which Starmer failed to do

Yes I agree.

Rayner did everything properly, so can't really be singled out for criticism.

Starmer fucked up by not declaring the donation. He has handed his opponents a massive stick to beat him with and has put his wife into the firing line too. I feel a bit sorry for her.

All politicians are exactly the same.

First reply nailed it. Every single one of them manipulating the population to vote for them so they can get their noses further into the trough. I understand why people vote for smaller parties where politicians are still guided by values and a desire for change, rather than a desire to win at the game of politics. I don't think I could hate anyone worse than the Tories but imagine convincing yourself that your wife needs thousands of pounds worth of free fancy clothes while other people just beyond pension credit limits are ok to go without heating, or that education should be taxed so only the true elite can pay for independent schools while the remainder are treated to a third of a teacher extra in their school to compensate for an influx of sen kids and larger class sizes. I could stomach the latter better from people who didn't believe they personally are owed a life of comfort and privilege.

Mmm. Not all small parties are any better. Look at Farage.

olivehater · 15/09/2024 20:09

Literally couldn’t care less. They are on the world stage being scrutinized for their clothes constantly. If I was his wife I would want a little help too. Its a drop in the ocean fro one of the most high pressure jobs in the world in comparison to the pay.

In fairness, Farage’s party have put in their ‘contract with the people’ that they would raise the tax free allowance to around £20,000. I’m assuming that would put money into the pockets of the people. They do want to cancel the short-term climate goals so we stop impoverishing the country. I’d quite like to see a bit more of my money and have a bit more put into the British Economy.

However, I imagine that just like the Tories and Labour, Farage and Reform would likely show themselves to be just like every other self-serving politician and be a huge disappointment to their voters. But right now we don’t know and I can see why plenty of voters will be turning to them in desperation.

urbanbuddha · 15/09/2024 20:17

I voted Labour and I think it’s disappointing. I think it shows a real lack of political nous which is concerning.
I did notice that Lady S was never in the same dress twice but I assumed she was renting, or that Me + Em were courting her as a customer and that was why they were suddenly making so many red dresses.
But overall it leaves a sour taste. They’re going to have to up their game, especially as hard times are a-coming.

£2000 tickets for a fight or something? Not good. But not as bad at nearly £100,000. At least the rest he earned.

And per my previous post, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at Starmer’s donation’s had he not been preparing us for austerity and hardship. If he had raised the tax-free allowance and put more money into people’s pockets, I would not find it so hypocritical.

So who will people want? A politician who takes tens of thousands in gifts and makes us poor…or a politician who will likely take tens of thousands in gifts, but allow us to keep more of our money.

This is the question that many will now be asking themselves.

Buildingthefuture · 15/09/2024 20:29

@PandoraSox ”Raynor did everything properly}? In WHAT world? She shouted abuse at Matt Handcock in the House of Commons. Whilst yes he was an absolute dumb ass sleaze ball, yelling about the morals of an affair whilst having one yourself frankly takes the fucking biscuit. She scammed the system for CGT, which her party are now going to ramp up and she benefited massively from right to buy which she now claims is the devil in Tory blue clothes. And she’s taking multiple thousands from “donors”? She is a hypocrite, same as the rest of them.

Creamcarpetandwhitewalls · 15/09/2024 20:37

And the party have done this to themselves.

Nat6999 · 15/09/2024 20:39

Would it be any different if designers were donating clothes for her to wear as free advertising? I seem to remember designers giving clothes to Princess Diana & there was no uproar then.

Boringcatchronicles · 15/09/2024 20:40

Some shocking responses. This is not a non story. I am so angry. Starmer has accepted "gifts "..... do people think these gifts came freely? Of course not. He didn't even declare all of it, but regardless politicians should not accept anything. They need to be above this. I work in public sector..cannot accept anything.

Against the backdrop of lies about why they got rid of wfa, the lies about the rise of the "far right", the release of prisoners......

Absolutly shocking from labour.

To be honest for me the anger stems from
‘You will all feel pain, but I will feel rather snazzy in my free expensive suits’. It’s tone deaf.

Same, I'm pretty shocked by those saying its not a big deal or who cares or youtubers do it so why not them :S

These donations arent just a PR package of ooh try my product, its to buy influence or its to buy access or some other benefit off the man running the country.
I hope gifts bribes to individuals are banned in the future, there are lots of industries or jobs where that is the case. Prime ministers shouldn't be for sale, buy your own fucking clothes and soft furnishings.

I was talking about Rayner's handling of her donation declarations. As for the housing stuff, that has been rehashed and rebutted a thousand times on MN.

It is funny how Rayner really sets off the froth mode in some posters.

Buildingthefuture · 15/09/2024 20:52

@PandoraSox i don’t find it funny at all that Raynor et al are all hypocritical, self serving asshats. All the parties are as bad as each other and it’s not funny in any way that THIS shower is the best we can find to represent us.

Don't the Royals have a system of wearing carefully researched clothes in order to promote UK designers? I think that's a positive. I think I remember that a pair of jeans Meghan wore secured the future of Huit jeans in West Wales. This isn't that.

She wasn't an elected member of parliament or married to an elected member of our legislature.

When you’re talking about dresses costing several thousand pounds for state occasions then, yes, anyone who didn’t inherit their wealth would struggle.

What arrangements about clothes did Theresa May have? I thought she bought them herself. She definitely had a local boutique that sourced stuff for her.

In every job I’ve had taking gifts has always been mentioned in inductions and a very big no no
in my last company people have been sacked for accepting gifts
anyone explain why these lot are different

hilarious they were the first to shout about other parties taking gift then fuck me they do the same

the decent from the moral high ground seems to of been rapid

Precisely- it is the lack of nous, more than anything, I find upsetting. There’s also something distasteful about pouncing on the freebies the minute they have the chance, while telling us life is going to get hard. I (naively) hoped Labour would be better.

Yet both Carrie Johnson and the Princess of Wales have hired dresses for big occasions in recent years - more environmentally friendy as well as cheaper.
