To clipper cut DS’s with lice

ThatHappyAmberDog · 14/09/2024 06:58

DS7, 9 and 11 all have lice. I’m in the process of treating them but their hair is quite long and very thick. I have bought a pair of clippers from Amazon and plan to buzz their hair after school to make their treatment easier. I imagine they won’t be fond of this but it is going to save me hours of treatment and it will grow back. AIBU?

Many years ago my sister shaved her daughters heads.
It was the last day at school but she could not get rid of the lice it must have been an outbreak at the school both girls were bunched with them.
She told the girls she will treat their hair and go through it 3 times aday.
However her oldest at the time said just shave it.
So she got the clippers out and went with the blade job done.
It grows back.

You've clearly made your mind up so not sure why you're posting to ask aibu? Most have said you are.

TeenLifeMum · 14/09/2024 09:24

Just use a nitty gritty comb. I have 3 DDs with long thick hair and work full time. It’s a massive pain and doing it at midnight nearly broke me but it’s something you have to do.

I have and my sister has had a buzz cut for years.
One of her daughters have a buzz cut as well.

What to help with slapping on a bit of conditioner and helping keep a 7 yo entertained/still to help his Mum out? I'm not saying make him do everything but families help each other out don't they

Yes. It's disgusting to expect and older child to touch lice ridden hair

I’m a Primary teacher, in 20 years of teaching I’ve never seen a girl with a buzz cut. You’re talking rubbish.

I have no way of proving it to you but I would have hoped that a teacher would have a more open mind. Do you not believe anything unless you have seen it yourself?

I am actually quite upset that people think that I am not telling the truth. I can't prove it as I am hardly going to whip out my phone and photograph the child next time I encounter it.

I believe you. Ignore the haterz

SonicTheHodgeheg · 14/09/2024 09:36

I did it when did was about 9 and he was delighted not to have to endure sitting down and combing for ages. Think he had a number 3 or so all over.

You probably need to ask the 11 year old though as buzz cuts aren’t really fashionable for secondary students (although some like it which is obviously fine )

Barney16 · 14/09/2024 09:38

My mum who was a teacher for 40 years says the only children in her classes that didn't get nits if there was an outbreak were girls with very tightly plaited hair. Not relevant to the OP obviously. Treat them and then get their hair cut shorter so it's not a mission if they get nits again.

sleepyscientist · 14/09/2024 09:41

Just buy a couple of bottles of the full marks solution absolutely soak the hair for 5 minutes and wash out. We didn't combs at all and it worked fine even on my very long hair (thanks DS) just made sure we had enough product on the hair to kill everything.

WorriedRelative · 14/09/2024 09:49

It's the weekend. Buy a couple of bottles of cheap conditioner and two rubber swim caps. Tonight before bed slap absolutely loads of conditioner on put the swim cap on and let them sleep like that.

Comb through then wash out in the morning. Blow dry on hot until very very dry.

No way any lice will survive all that.

Shineybrightthings · 14/09/2024 09:51

Ahh a touch of nostalgia. The good old 1930s when heads were shaved to treat/prevent head lice. I remember my dad telling me that when he went to the cinema as a child a member of staff would walk along the aisle and spray everyone with toxic DDT insecticide to combat lice and fleas. Maybe if you take it up with the school they could do this at assembly and treat everyone at the same time 😊

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 14/09/2024 09:53

Get the extra strong 5 minutes lice treatment shampoo, Comb normally and liberally apply it to all three children's dry hair. Put a shower cap on them and leave 10 minutes. Wash it off. You don't need to lice comb

Seaside3 · 14/09/2024 10:01

Don't forget ti do yours too, if they all have them, you likely do too.

msbevvy · 14/09/2024 07:18

I certainly have. You must live in a much more affluent area than I do. I strongly suspect that these haircuts are directly connected to head lice outbreaks.

Why do people come on here to lie. You haven’t seen loads of young girls with buzz cuts. Maybe you’re getting real life mixed up with a disaster movie you’ve watched.

He HAS lice ridden hair - at the very least, he can help do his own conditioner and help with keeping the 7&9 year old brothers still and entertained. It's got to be a bit of a family effort when it's a single parent working long hours. Its just hair and lice, we arent asking him to de-worm his siblings for fucks sake. I don't wish to argue about this anymore.

Arrivapercy · 14/09/2024 10:23

Are you seriously implying that those in less affluent areas just shave their kids hair if they get headline??? I live in a very deprived area and can assure you that no one is buzz cutting kids hair whether they are male or female.

My mum taught for 30 years in a deprived area. It was extremely common to buzz cut boys to treat/avoid lice. Its not a new thing. For girls it was more common to send them to school with very tight french plaits, close to the head, lots of hairspray, again as a way to reduce chance of nits. People do it because it works!!

Terracata · 14/09/2024 10:23

I'm a lone parent and my son has long, thick, tight afro hair. If I can do it you can too OP. Brush with a nit comb and conditioner, nit treatment, tie it up at school. They were gone in a few days.

I believe you i went to school with a buzz cut.
As i said above my sister has had a buzz cut since she was 16.
Her oldest daughter has had a buzz cut since she was 12 now 24 still got a buzz cut.
My friends daughter 15 has a buzz cut and goes to high school.
Ive seen loads of girls and young women with buzz cuts.
I had one for years,

There are no treatments that kill all the eggs in one treatment. None.

You have to comb & re- treat. Otherwise you are one of the fools who's kids keep infecting everyone else when the eggs hatch and the whole class has lice again.

Allnewtometoo · 14/09/2024 10:26

Just get a decent treatment, slather it on and deal with it. Repeat next week, and the week after.

Arrivapercy · 14/09/2024 10:27

Full marks etc do not kill the eggs. Even hedrin once only has somethng like a 50% kill rate on eggs, which is why in their own faqs they tell you to treat again a week later. So its not really once.

Of course he can do his own hair.

But I don't care if its a single parent family. No kid should have to touch their siblings lice ridden hair. Even if they have their own lice.

Yeah I'm worried about all these people not reading the instructions.

TheNoodlesIncident · 14/09/2024 10:29

You don't need to go as short as a buzz cut, that looks really severe and they'll stand out. We've always cut our DS's hair at home with clippers, it's not that difficult (and I have dyspraxia). We take the bulk off with scissors all round, then trim with an 8 guide on the top and a 5 for the back and sides. It looks very neat and is easy to manage when you need to treat for nits.

Lice don't have lungs, they breathe through pores in their exoskeleton so covering them with anything that will coat the insect's body will smother them - oil, conditioner, Hedrin, etc. Doing this and going over them with the nit comb for a few days afterwards should sort it, and your sons might decide they prefer having this cut, who knows?
