To clipper cut DS’s with lice

ThatHappyAmberDog · 14/09/2024 06:58

DS7, 9 and 11 all have lice. I’m in the process of treating them but their hair is quite long and very thick. I have bought a pair of clippers from Amazon and plan to buzz their hair after school to make their treatment easier. I imagine they won’t be fond of this but it is going to save me hours of treatment and it will grow back. AIBU?

If you look up the stats, even a completely shaved head can get lice..my youngest DD at primary school a long time ago,had thick waist length hair, tied in high ponytail , because of asthma and eczema could not use standard treatments. Our local pharmacist said you have to check the hair 3 times a day, morning, after school, bedtime. I relayed this to the Head, nothing happened. Standard letter still went out....check hair every 3 days. I tried electric combs. In the end it was in the bath and comb through with thick conditioner every night
We were told they prefer blonde straight hair, this was certainly her!

As they've all got nits , it must have taken a few days to spread , so you'll need to treat yourself and DH . Are you going to buzz cut yourselves too !

They just have very very thick hair and so it’s difficult to treat when I work so many hours

You can’t shave your children’s heads just because you are too busy to treat them properly, that’s appalling!

Katemax82 · 14/09/2024 08:57

You can douse their hair in vodka if you want a good effective treatment (or perfumers alcohol) I did this on my daughter when she was 6 and her lice kept coming back

Comtesse · 14/09/2024 08:59

No don’t do that. Go to a big chemist and buy whatever nit products are on special offer. Treat them today and then do it again next week. There is one that you need to leave on for just 5 mins. A buzz cut would be horrible for them.

loudbatperson · 14/09/2024 09:00

Are you going to shave your head, as most likely you have them too?

If the boys want their heads shaved go ahead. If they don't then it's cruel. Just treat them properly.

I have seen plenty of young girls with buzz cuts in our area.

I’m a Primary teacher, in 20 years of teaching I’ve never seen a girl with a buzz cut. You’re talking rubbish.

smallchange · 14/09/2024 09:00

If they're ok with having short hair, give them a no.8 clipper cut (1inch), then get rid of the nits and then take them to the barber for a proper style.

No need to buzz it all off.

FuckMiniBabybells · 14/09/2024 09:01

Don't be so bloody lazy. Yes, it's annoying and time consuming but it's part and parcel of having kids in school.

Conditioner and a nitty gritty comb and just get on with it woman. They'll be lice free after a couple of weeks.

freakinthespreadsheets · 14/09/2024 09:02

Get them all to absolutely slather (and I mean SLATHER) their hair in the thickest cheap conditioner you can find, they need to really rub it in thick. They can sit like that for a few hours and it should smother the lice. Then start combing through. Not all on ypu though, 11yo can help surely with his younger brothers?

Flashcardsagain · 14/09/2024 09:04

What grade are you defining 'buzz'? Because a grade 6 is very very different to a grade 1 cut.

Also remember that you still need to treat and regularly check for lice and eggs. Lice can live on very short hair.

I buzzed my ds’s hair to a grade 3 when he was 6yo. There was a kid with long curly hair whose parents just never bothered with his nits. He was a good friend of my ds and my ds kept catching them and giving them to me and my dd.

After I buzzed his to a grade 3, the nit problem was solved. They can’t live in very short hair because it’s too warm if they are too close to the scalp.

My ds is now an adult and has had the grade 3 haircut constantly since the age of 6. No brushing no combing no nits and never looks out of place. Less use of shampoo, dries instantly. It’s absolutely brilliant.

That comment is unnecessary.

How would you treat it if it was your daughter's hair?

Don't choose the lazy option, treat the poor kids properly and let them keep their hair how they like it.

I actually cut my DDs hair pretty short after months of repeated lice (class not being treated).
Girls can have short hair!
OP are they up for having their hair shorter? Doesn't have to be a no.1

It's not fair to get the 11yr old to do that

FloofPaws · 14/09/2024 09:12

Just wash the hair, slather it in cheap conditioner, brush all the knots out then use a bit comb, so this every day or two and the bits go, lice hatch and you catch them too. Easy
Don't buzz cut them they'll look like little thugs

Righttherights · 14/09/2024 09:13

There are so many different treatments these days that aren’t a major pain. Social suicide to buzz cut. Telling the world they have nits! Maybe treat overnight , get a shorter haircut and spray school clothes with repellent .

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/09/2024 09:14

I'm sure I read the same thing a couple of weeks ago.

No they won't. They'll look like kids with short hair

What to help with slapping on a bit of conditioner and helping keep a 7 yo entertained/still to help his Mum out? I'm not saying make him do everything but families help each other out don't they

alpacachino · 14/09/2024 09:17

Beautiful3 · 14/09/2024 08:40

Yes absolutely. It's just a buzz cut. It will soon grow out. You're lucky they're boys!

What? What does their sex have to do with it?

HelenWheels · 14/09/2024 09:20

treat them every other day,
they can run a lice comb through themselves also

CharlotteBog · 14/09/2024 09:21

As pp has said, check the rules especially if your oldest son is in secondary. They often have rules as to how short it can go.
I really feel for the boys; they may get teased turning up with buzz cuts done by their mum.

You can absorb alcohol through the scalp, this isn't a good idea. The cheapest way (though time consuming) is combing with conditioner.

Op you do get treatments that are done in 20mins.
