To eat this some nights before bed?

OrangeRoseApple · 13/09/2024 11:01

Maybe about 4 nights a week I'll have a bowl of oats or homemade muesli before bed as I'm craving it sometimes. The following day then I won't eat till lunchtime. I actually sleep better the nights I eat this. I've no extra weight gain, am about 9 stone.

Is this bad for me and should I stop?

I don't see a problem with this at all! Intermittent fasting is also meant to be quite beneficial.

Sparklywhiteteeth · 13/09/2024 11:06

Are you prone to anxiety or something, why is this even a question?

OrangeRoseApple · 13/09/2024 11:09

It's just the fact you hear how eating late can be bad for your body, disrupt sleep etc. I'd eat it at 9 or 10pm

It's a healthy food option, it helps you get a good sleep and you aren't gaining weight.
Sounds like a win win situation to me.

1: 9 or 10pm isn't late.
2: you're eating a bowl of cereal, not a four person Indian takeaway with rice and naan and a pint of Ben & Jerry's for afters.
3: 'hear' where? I have never 'heard' this anywhere.

If this is truly your most pressing concern, I'll happily swap. I would love to have the time and headspace to be this self obsessed.

This is the challenge, you hear lots of things and lots of them are rubbish . You know your body so listen to that! I think it’s taking about a very heavy meal, sure some of us have been out for dinner late and almost got a good hangover or had Chinese or Indian food and felt dehydrated and just rough in bed. Not oats.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 13/09/2024 11:28

OP. In the north this is called 'supper' a bowl of cereal before bed. Perfectly normal and absolutely fine.

Is it causing a problem with your sleep?

To me it sounds perfectly fine, but then I am a Lancastrian, and it just sounds like a normal supper.

OneTC · 13/09/2024 11:31

Do you have it with milk?

OrangeRoseApple · 13/09/2024 11:32

Yes, with milk, and dried fruit, nuts, thrown in

OP posts:
sunsetsandboardwalks · 13/09/2024 11:33

You can find research that tells you anything if you look hard enough.

If it's not causing you any problems then I'm not sure why it would be an issue?

Ghilliegums · 13/09/2024 11:34

Do you have issues around food? Otherwise this is a totally irrelevant question.

MovingTooFast121 · 13/09/2024 11:36

Why do you need to ask strangers if you should eat when you are hungry? You need to stop ascribing moral value to food. Eating is not ‘bad’, nor indeed is it ‘good’.

Milk can be pretty good for promoting sleep. Maybe that's the bit you're craving.

fwiw I like eating late because I am a food coma type and combining the two seems efficient. It has never had any sort of noticeable effect on my health or weight.

What the actual fuck is this response?

God this thread is full of wankers.

If you sleep better OP then go for it. I have also heard that eating late can be detrimental but then I’ve heard all sorts of things over the years that can be good or bad for you. If it’s making you feel good then go for it.

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 13/09/2024 11:39

Just do what you want with your own body and never mind what you 'hear'.

In many homes it's called 'supper' and has been for centuries.

I'm pretty sure people realised that was rubbish back in to 80s.

wetpebbles · 13/09/2024 11:52

sounds like it helps you sleep, I always have carbs before bed for the same reason, I think it's called a carb coma

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/09/2024 11:55

It’s not even that late!

9 pm is dinner time for some adults.

Although I wouldn’t advise eating dinner that late for your health, a bowl of oats, I believe, can actually help you sleep.

What an unnecessarily aggressive and insulting comment.

We are deluged with conflicting information about what and when to eat, this includes the advice not to snack late at night. It’s perfectly reasonable for OP ask for advice on a public forum.

@OrangeRoseApple if your late night snack isn’t causing weight gain or stopping you from falling asleep, there would seem to be no problem at all. I’d only mention that when I want to eat before bed, it’s because I’ve not eaten enough earlier in the day - but we’re all different.

RaspberryBeretxx · 13/09/2024 12:04

If it works for you then I'd go for it all the time! It's just like having breakfast the night before.

FiveTreeHill · 13/09/2024 12:06

Do you normally have this much anxiety around your food choices?

Well you sleep better so it's clearly not bad for you or disrupting anything. In fact it must be good for you as you sleep better.

Just googled and it's apparently because some slow release carbs before bed can enhance sleep and the tryptophan from milk passes blood brain barrier and enhances mood and sleep.

Every day is a school day etc...might do it myself!

Wow chill out, maybe have a bowl of oats.

Spomb · 13/09/2024 12:14

I eat my dinner between 2100-2200 every night. It’s never crossed my mind this was bad for you!!
