To not go on the residential?

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 11/09/2024 23:22

I've just started a new p/t teaching role. Towards the end of the academic year the whole year group go on a residential which is about 3.5 hours away, for a full school week.
I have a just-turned 4 yo and other academic commitments outside of school.
AIBU to say I can't attend the residential?
As an aside, my mum (love her) thought teachers got paid for any additional hours regarding this. She was surprised to learn I'd just be getting my standard pay!

You weren’t told as it is a given that teachers take kids on school trips 🙄

I must have missed this part in my job description 🤔

But you are being paid- you are paid an annual salary- you aren’t paid by the hour and like in any job some flexibility is required. And presumably you have to already pay for childcare when you are at work.

Work is a day, not a full week, 24 hours a day. My childcare is paid for and scheduled around mine and DH’s regular work patterns, not DH working and looking after the children as a solo parent for a week.

I’m not sure that you know what a residential trip is.

Doitalready · 14/09/2024 13:53

No way don't do it. Ridiculous to expect this from teachers who are already under resourced

😂😂😂😂😂Me too! I wonder if the poster is confusing day trips with residentials? 😂

No I am not. Overnight trips away are to be expected in teaching.

And yet the thread is full of teachers saying the opposite. And you are not actually a teacher 🤨

The particular poster that you are referring to actually described residentials as "free holidays" for the staff so I wouldn't be giving much credence to her opinions. 😂

Jessie3 · 14/09/2024 15:28

An obvious wind up merchant.

Janedoe82 · 14/09/2024 16:14

100% believe what I am saying- not trying to wind up. Just calling a spade a spade which clearly is annoying all the teachers who don’t want to take kids on residential trips. 🙄

Do you honestly believe the teachers taking kids on the annual ski trip, all paid for, don’t want to be there and would rather be in school teaching as opposed to in Austria?? Really?

Jessie3 · 14/09/2024 16:28

The reason that I think you are in the wind up is because I can’t believe anyone could really be this dense.

Try checking the facts before typing more rubbish! Where have I said that staff on residentials do not want to be there and would prefer to be in school teaching?
Residentials are not "free holidays", they are hard work.....very hard work! I have been on many. I have never resented being there (I wouldn't have agreed to go if I didn't want to). However, your perception of what these residentials actually involve seems rather skewed (if indeed you do actually believe what you say you do and aren't just trying to get a reaction). Either that, or you have had some weird holidays in the past if you liken a residential to a holiday.

Being as the ski trips take place when there is no school. I doubt that the teachers on the trips worry too much about teaching.

Except that they are not a requirement in teaching, no amount of you or other posters saying so will make it the truth.

If it wasn’t seen as a free holiday and was ‘very hard work’ why would they go during the flipping holidays when they could be at home!
Honestly the amount of rubbish rather than just admitting that a free trip abroad is a perk rather than this horrendous onerous thing being put on teachers!

FrippEnos · 14/09/2024 17:17

Has anyone said "horrendous onerous" or is it just you twisting things to suit your narrative?
Some teachers go on them because they enjoy them.
Some teachers go on them "for the kids"
Some teachers go on them because if they don't the management coerce them and won't promote them or give them a pay rise.

And it s only a perk if you want to do it.

At least you have run out of points to make.

@Youthiswastedontheyoung

Well OP, those who work in the profession and actually know what this all entails are clearly behind you 100%. Your child and husband come before any additional work demands. Ignore those who don't have a clue. Sadly, you will never change their mindset. Good luck x

He does have responsibilities yes. He's a lecturer.

For adults then, not the same as re: the U18s.

Beekeepingmum · 14/09/2024 18:58

Don't go. There is no upside to you, only downside. Personal risk if something goes wrong under your responsibility but no pay to compensate. Evenings looking after other peoples shitty children. The parents will think you are getting a cushy free holiday. If the school wants to run these trips the parents should pay for the real cost of providing staff to cover it.

This! Yes I do it because I enjoy it, like I enjoy many parts of my job. But it is not a free holiday, it is hard work, particularly for the group leader. Also, depending on the trip, it’s often not exactly the kind of place you would choose to go on holiday- sleeping in draughty dorms, getting up at 6am and going orienteering in the rain anyone?! Yay, free holiday! 🤨

Thankfully in most schools there are enough people who want to go that noone feels coerced. OP, just make it clear you won’t be going, and don’t feel bad!
