Find the switch (you'll know it's off if you open the fridge and the light stays off!) and then you're sorted. Ours is integrated and the switch is on top.

Then just use the tips on here. It's very satisfying! No point doing it when it's on, the freezer just registers that it's too warm and works overtime to try cool down.

I dont know where the plug is as it's integrated.
I didn't think you had turn off to defreeze

Of course you do!
That's why you've had no success so far.

JC03745 · 10/09/2024 20:05

OP- do you have any friends/family to help?

I too have an integrated fridge/freezer with a separate on/off switch on a panel.

Defrosting it seems to be a massive PITA for you. Personally, I'd save the money on a handyman/cleaner and buy a frost free fridge freezer! Turn it on, add all your current fridge/freezer items to the new one, then defrost the old one and try selling it.

Use any money you would have spent on a handyman for defrosting, to use on a handyman to move the integrated doors to your new, frost free fridge/freezer.

BarbaraHoward · 10/09/2024 20:05

Fridge off is fine for a little bit, just leave the door closed.

HappyDane · 10/09/2024 20:07

Yes and if you put everything from the freezer into the fridge packed around the contents then it'll all stay colder for longer.

sonjadog · 10/09/2024 20:08

In my integrated fridge freezer, the on/off button for the freezer is in the fridge part at the very top. It isn't near the freezer so if you didn't know it was there, then it would be easy to oversee. Have a look at the top edge of your fridge when you have the door open, OP. Or else look carefully along the whole edging. The off button will be there somewhere.

SunflowerJones · 10/09/2024 20:10

My switches for my freezer and my oven are inside a kitchen cupboard on the back wall.

Ohnobackagain · 10/09/2024 20:13

@Aquarius1234 look up the model and the user guide will tell you how to defrost? Better if you have it empty but it can be done more quickly if needed …

Aquarius1234 · 10/09/2024 20:14

I can only see the temperature thing inside fridge.

It's tall fridge then small freezer. Completely fitted in.

I don't want to sound judgemental, but: the OP's question is surprising.

If you can't access the power for the fridge freezer then turn off the power to the whole house at the fuse box.

Open the freezer, put towels/trays under the freezer, leave the door propped wide open and go out for the day. The fridge should be OK for a while if it is left closed but I would run down the stuff in the fridge and freezer before you do it - just a few sauces and butter will be fine.

LouH5 · 10/09/2024 20:22

My boyfriend and I had a big freezer clear out at the weekend, and have vowed to spend this week eating nothing but frozen leftovers so it’s (hopefully!) empty in time for this coming weekend when we plan to defrost it. I’m loving the ideas of putting a cake tin/sauce pan of boiling water on each shelf to speed up the process- would never have thought of this! Thank you!

Why can't you do it?

You really don't need to buy harmful and dangerous chemical. Just turn the freezer off.

Scentsless · 10/09/2024 20:23

If it is a combined fridge/freezer, you won't be able to turn one off without the other. Just flick the switch off at the socket.

When I defrost my fridge/freezer I run the contents down a bit, then freeze some ice packs and move the contents of both fridge and freezer into an ice box whilst I defrost and clean both out.

LittleRedYarny · 10/09/2024 20:23

I feel you OP my fridge needs sorting and I have a psychological block (I’m going to bribe my mate to help me face it.) I saw a new app on Instagram called TaskHer for female tradespeople, might be worth a look? Maybe whoever would be open to you watching over their shoulder to get a couple of tips?

Its a horrible job when there is a crazy amount of ice.
And yes I was trying to do it previously without turning if off.

The fridge will be fine switched off for a bit if you don't open the door. Just like it's ok if you have a short power cut.

But you do need to switch the freezer off to defrost, otherwise it's just going to be going full pelt trying to stay cold while you're making it hot to melt the ice. You can damage it by doing that.

Also don't be tempted to try to chip the ice off, you can damage the cooling thingy doing that and puncture a pipe, then it'll be banjaxed.

ShamblesRock · 10/09/2024 20:28

My integrated FF, to get to the freezer I have to have the fridge open, there is then an on/off switch inside. It's a Hotpoint.

I put the freezer food into a cool bag and just leave the fridge food where it is.

Have you looked inside cabinets for plug / switches. Or a switch on the wall nearby. Itmust be somewhere.

Main power might be the only way. 😐

Another who can't understand how you can't do it? I've been known to deploy a hairdryer to speed things up (being extremely careful around the water, obviously).

2 x hairdryers at once

ODFOx · 10/09/2024 20:33

Your fridge is like a cool box so if you don't open it you don't have to worry about it warming up.
Eat as much from the freezer as possible so there's less to save.
Find the switch for the fridge freezer and turn it off.
Put any frozen food into a cool box or crate with as many cool blocks/ice cubes as you have.
Open the freezer door, take out the drawers, put a towel on the floor in front of the opening ( or a shallow tray if you have one that fits) and chip away and big bits of ice: then use any non-damaging means at your disposal to melt the rest: as pp have said. Once it's gone just wipe it out and put the drawers back in. Turn it on. Half an hour later you can put the food back as long as it hasn't defrosted.
