I can only open it for 2 seconds before the door doesn't work again. Have to really push it shut.
Black mould alone the seal I just wiped off.

I think a cleaning company would do it for you.

No idea how to turn it off. It's fridge freezer combined.

Switch it off and keep the fridge door shut while you're defrosting the freezer.

You're not succeeding if you don't unplug the thing!

Probably because there's far too much ice built up.

HappyDane · 10/09/2024 19:30

There's not always a separate on/off switch for each part. Put items into cold box/whatever to keep them cold. Turn off or unplug. Thaw out your freezer and give your fridge a quick clean at the same time.

Chillilounger · 10/09/2024 19:30

Well you can do what you want. Taskrabbit is an app for handymen. You can ask there, but expect to be charged a fortune (I once knew someone that got a handyman out to change a lightbulb and got charged a fortune). Empty it, unplug it, get some.old towels on the floor and wait. Then wipe it clean once the ice has melted, plug it back in and then stick the food back in. Simples.

(Is it psychological that you can't do it, or is it that you don't know how to?)

Both.

Where do you live? I’ll come and do it for you

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/09/2024 19:36

I would ask a cleaning company if you really can't do it but it isn't tricky. Run down the fridge so that you have a minimum of items and keep fridge door shut or put in a cold box if it is taking ages.
Turn off at the wall, I leave the freezer door open and put towels on the lower level and by the door. I leave the drawers in to catch water and lumps of ice . I get impatient and poke about from time to time to dislodge chunks of ice. It can take a day if very iced up so asking someone to come in to do it isn't v practical. Just go back to it every hour or so to remove loose ice and chuck out water. Defrosted food won't be able to go back in .

Yes loads of ice on top shelf. I don't have a top shelf It's just ice with hole.

I dont know where the plug is as it's integrated.

There will be a master switch on the wall somewhere.

If you try to thaw without switching off you will waste a lot of energy.

You can do this.

shellyleppard · 10/09/2024 19:49

@Aquarius1234 turn off at the main plug. Some have a switch in the freezer too

HappyDane · 10/09/2024 19:49

(it's also safer to always switch off anything electrical before you work on it)

How much did they charge for changing the light bulb?
I need that doing too. Lol it's cos it's an awkward one.

A hairdryer works wonders for this

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 10/09/2024 19:53

@Aquarius1234 with my old freezer, i used a wet/dry vacuum and used to bank on the sides of the freezer with the end of the hose and vacuum up the ice!! resort to a hairdryer. next time you buy a freezer, make sure it is frost free!

NeedToChangeName · 10/09/2024 20:00

OP, don't waste your money paying for a handyman. Ask a friend to help you find the plug / on off switch

nonevernotever · 10/09/2024 20:00

When I worked as a cleaner years ago I was asked to defrost the freezer a few times and I didn't think anything of it. You really don't need a handyman though. If you really can't face it, ask a cleaning company for a one off clean to include defrosting the freezer.

RandomUsernameHere · 10/09/2024 20:02

I did mine recently with a hairdryer (can't switch it off without also switching off the fridge).

Aquarius1234 · 10/09/2024 20:03

I like the idea of hairdryer or steam cleaner. Haven't got steamer.
Just worried about accidently getting water on it. Even though I'm careful. Things happen..

Same I think. Don't want the fridge off.

Yes these days I think its just finding the right cleaner. Never had one. So many bad reviews online. You get a cleaner and they do a worse job.
I guess I could say I just need bathroom toilets deep cleaned limescale and also freezer. 2 hours worth ?
