To think this is freaky … FREAKY?

On Thursday , 22nd August this year I journaled in my diary that I felt down and wished I’d gone to a certain school which happened to be 150 miles away from where I grew up - different city in a completely different UK region. My own school was terrible. I wrote in my diary that I was bitter about my background and if I’d gone to the school 150 miles away - I’d met someone on holiday who went there - I feel I’d have been much happier in life. I named the school SPECIFICALLY on my diary - it’s the first time in my life I wrote down that I wished I’d gone to a specific school.

3 days later - Sunday, August 25th - I’m on holiday at a B & B and I completely randomly meet someone who went to the school I wanted to go to. We had a convo and this info unfolded during the course of the convo. The B & B was 300 miles away from my ‘dream’ school - a COMPLETELY different region of the UK.

At no point did I give the person a ‘heads up’ that I ever wanted to go to the school or knew anyone who’d been there and I was on my own having a convo with them so no ‘friend’ could’ve leaked it.

so in a nutshell -

I write in my diary I wanted go to a specific school - first time in my life I’ve done this - and 3 days later I completely randomly meet someone who went to said school 300 miles away from said school..

I mean of ALL the schools literally in the UK!! And given we’re the same age we would’ve been at the school at the same time.

AIBU to think it’s freaky ?

thanks for reading if you’ve made it this far

Did you ask the second person if they knew your "lost love"?

No - I didn’t mention him - they would’ve been 2 years younger

I mean I think it'd be freaky if you got a letter from the school saying they're very sad you didn't attend and they've been thinking about you too.

This is just a coincidence.

This. And a very mild coincidence? I used to work at a popular uk holiday destination. I now live in a different country doing a completely different job. When I get asked where I’m from I mention the place, and regularly people will say oh we’ve been on holiday there, and then name the very specific place I worked at. I’d say it’s no more ‘freaky’ or interesting than that

TealTraybake · 09/09/2024 11:49

That is slight coincidence. I’m interested in why you wanted to go to (and how you knew about) a school that was 150 miles away from where you lived?? That was a long time ago and it doesn’t sound like it was a ‘famous’ school!

Cos I hated my upbringing and had a crush on someone who went to said school 😍

It’s not freaky, it’s just a coincidence. There have been much freakier coincidences.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 09/09/2024 12:01

Someone once told me all these seemingly weird coincidences happen because there are only 300 real people in the world. All the rest are just ‘extras’ who evaporate as soon as they’re out of your sight.

It was a joke, of course, but I’ve never heard a better explanation!

Osirus · 09/09/2024 12:02

I had a funny coincidence last week. Someone very close to me left my life abruptly some months ago, without a word and despite trying, had no success in contacting them. I was watching a game show on TV and one of the answers was the country he was born in. I thought, “wouldn’t it be a brilliant coincidence if today is the day he gets in touch?” Hours later, when I got home, I realised he’d emailed me, at the exact same time as I was thinking that thought!

I know that’s the thing - if I’d gone to this desired but much rougher school, I’d have no qualms about writing arse! 😂

Anyone can write "arse" - it has no relationship with what type of school they went to over 40 years ago 🤔

Sorry I can't get past the fact that a 40-50 something woman is "journaling" that she wished she went to a different school and is still bitter about it...

Breadcat24 · 09/09/2024 12:04

What is freaky is

  1. obsessing about what school you went to so many years later
  2. As an older adult discussing what school you went to with strangers

If you do this often enough then sooner or later you will speak to someone from that school.
Move on!!!

It’s bizarre that you’re still writing about this in your diary in 2024. Are you someone who tends to dwell on the past? I don’t think meeting someone from the school is ‘freaky’, I think you’re using the encounter as an excuse to ruminate further.

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 09/09/2024 12:10

Blimey, I was expecting something far more than this coincidence from the dramatic thread title.

It's one of those situations where I'd think, 'Ooh how strange' and then probably never think about it again.

Choochoo21 · 09/09/2024 12:11

You will never be happy if you continue living in the past.

Focus on all of the good things that are in your present and make changes to hopefully improve your future.

I truly believe what’s meant to be will be and you weren’t meant to go to that school or be in a relationship with that man at that time.

Why not look for him on Facebook and see if you can’t rekindle a romance?

You’ll probably spend 5mins with him and realise he’s not your dream man at all.

x2boys · 09/09/2024 12:12

It's just a really weird random coincidence
Here's one for you ,my parents went to my cousins wedding in Australia in the mid 90,s they decided to make a holiday of it and take it as an opportunity to travel around Australia,
I had recently moved back home to their after qualifying as a nurse
One night in a bar my parents got chatting to another English couple, the ladies job was to find accommodation for university students and she had recently placed a couple of students in a house in the city i trained
As she described the house my mum and Dad recognised the sound of it and on further questioning found it it was the same student house ,I had lived in and moved out off just a few months prior!

Breadcat24 · 09/09/2024 12:13

No but you talked about their old school- which is weird. I am 58 and it has been a good 38 years since I talked about school with someone- and I do not think that is unusual

Putmeinsummer · 09/09/2024 12:16

The freaky thing is talking to a random person in a b&b and then talking to them about this weird school hang up.

ClareBlue · 09/09/2024 12:16

Sethera · 09/09/2024 11:22

It is a really interesting coincidence!

It's easy to start feeling that such things are 'freaky' but you have to consider all the coincidences that don't happen - all the random things you think about that someone doesn't later bring up in conversation.

This
We only remember or know about the coincidence, not the millions of times things didn't coincide.

Sethera · 09/09/2024 12:20

Nothing odd about that at all! Have you really never fallen into a meandering conversation with someone you've met in a public place?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 09/09/2024 12:22

Try an experiment - write in your journal tonight that you wish you had met Christopher Biggins. Then see tomorrow if you meet Biggins or someone he went to school with. Then that'll be freaky AF.

Feel free to substitute Biggins for another random celeb such as Su Pollard though.

niadainud · 09/09/2024 12:26

It's just a coincidence, albeit an interesting one. It's not a "message from the universe" (what would such a message be saying, anyway??) or some other "woo" bullshit.

My new boss turned out to have gone to the same primary school as me, c.500 miles away. A friend of a friend went to my secondary school. So what? It doesn't mean anything.

You absolutely must report back if you happen to meet Chris or Su in the next few days (or exactly a year from today).

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 09/09/2024 12:27

You what?

EscapingTheseFeelings · 09/09/2024 12:28

I’m hoping the school you wished you went to was Hogwarts and the coincidences have happened because it’s the wizards from there! 😂
