Standing in trolley

after a debate with another parent this week, it got me thinking. AIBU to put my child ‘in’ the trolley?

I have a nearly 1 year old and a 2.5 year old. There is only one supermarket close to us that has trolleys with two seats.

If we have to go anywhere else I will put my youngest child in the seat and my 2 year old will walk. However, there are times when putting her in the trolley behind my other child is just 1000x easier than dragging her around the shop.

Discussion with another parent made me wonder if I really am ‘disgusting and spreading germs’ for letting her sit in there.

For context:

  • on the odd occasion this happens, she always sits, doesn’t stand.
  • I can’t ‘just go shopping without them’
  • Yes, she can walk. but she’s 2.5 years old. She likes to touch everything, ‘explore’ the shop and just be an average 2 year old.

so, AIBU? Or am I just an average parent trying to food shop with toddlers?

I’ve seen a few near misses with kids in trolleys. Once a kid was trying to lean over to the conveyor belt and nearly fell out. Another time the trolley nearly to tipped over.

So do I never leave the house? As much as online shopping is convenient, you can’t get everything you need online.

I disagree. I'm poorly and disabled and can't go shopping nowadays. I DO manage to get everything online.

DC in trolleys. I used to do that with mine, don't see anything wrong with it really.
The supermarket would have been in uproar if I hadn't put autistic DS inside trolley. It would have been a riot !!!!! 😊

With young toddler twins I had no option but to put one in the child seat and one in the trolley, as they were too small to walk around properly - felt a bit chaotic but there was no choice!!

Wow. “Other people can manage so why can’t you?”
l hope for the sake of your family and friends you don’t have this perspective on all aspects of life. What a sad life you must live. I hope you never need help with anything

Why did you ask for opinions then? If you can’t post without getting defensive and rude, don’t start threads like this. I am embarrassed for you.

Blushingm · 09/09/2024 20:05

It's dangerous too

Can't you put baby in a sling and let toddler sit in the trolley

Or internet shop?

Blushingm · 09/09/2024 20:08

Wordsareimportant · 08/09/2024 23:55

To be completely honest, I’ve never noticed a sign that says don’t do this.
where would you even look for something like that?! Where does it say it?!

I need to pay attention next time I’m in the shop 😂

It's usually on the handle - a picture

You seem quite defensive and smug OP. The laughing face when people think its gross or my child is safer - even though it's been risk assessed by the supermarket as a danger etc. You asked for opinions and you don't like anything that isn't the same as yours.

You aren't the first parent of a baby and toddler and everyone seems to manage. You can either do the bulk of your shop online and it's a lot quicker picking up bits or just manage like everyone before online shopping and just teach your kid, not to touch stuff unless they are helping by fetching something.

Edited

This!!

How much do your kids weigh? The double kiddo trolleys that take both of mine are max 15kg so they sit next to each other. I use hand sanitizer on the trolley before I put them in because otherwise we're all holding hands with everyone else who has pushed it.

Nicebloomers · 09/09/2024 20:18

I was a Saturday girl in Sainsbury’s when at uni and I’ve seen a few little kids get really hurt from being in the trolleys and them tipping up. One knocked all their front teeth out, it was horrific.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/09/2024 20:19

Are there no shops within walking distance and you can just use a double buggy?

I absolutely wouldn't mind at all as I have no intention on licking a trolley.

😂😂😂

SmileEachDay · 09/09/2024 20:33

The trolley will have been darked on.

This is much more of an issue.

Chillimuma · 09/09/2024 20:35

I always think the trolleys are much dirtier than a child. I mean I put a whole chicken that had damp packaging in the bottom of the trolley. Raw chicken juice ughh

IlooklikeNigella · 09/09/2024 20:46

I had my 6 year old child in the trolley today just for a bit of a laugh. I had no idea it was such a controversial move. When she was a toddler she had once fallen into a deep sleep in the car and I had lots of small things to pick up in the shopping centre. I got a trolley, put blankets in, made a bed and pushed her around various different floors. Lots of people laughed, nobody seemed annoyed.

You should probably call social services on me.

I have had to call an ambulance for a toddler with a very wonky arm after they managed to topple out of the trolley. So no.

I'd highly recommend a sling for the 1 year old. Put the 2 year old in the seat.

HappierTimesAhead · 09/09/2024 20:59

I'm genuinely suprised at all the stories of toddlers getting seriously hurt. I've put my DD in the trolley before and she just sits there. Her weight and the weight of the shopping is fairly heavy, I can't imagine it just tipping it over.

Flossflower · 09/09/2024 21:38

‘You can’t, however, shop for everything online’

Yes you absolutely can. With the exception of being on holiday, I have not been shopping in years. I hate it.

Stepawayfromthefridgenow · 09/09/2024 21:42

My just turned 6 year old sometimes still
wants to get in, I see it in the supermarket all the time where we are 🤷🏻‍♀️( not U.K.)

Jifmicroliquid · 09/09/2024 21:42

I’d be more worried if they leant over and tipped the trolley and hurt themselves. They are safer in the little seats but obviously that only houses one child.
Maybe they need to try and make trolleys with a seat front and back to take 2 little ones.

The seats in Asda by us fit 2 toddlers

I had a trolley overturn on a Homebase car park. The wheels we on the stiff side as it was, and I had some floor tiles that had made their way to the side at the front. They were no where near as heavy as a child, and the whole lot went over.

Oh that’s good. I don’t think I’ve seen 2 seat ones before (but I might not have noticed in fairness).

User0311 · 09/09/2024 22:11

Yes I would put my child in the trolley. The shelves and store floors are probably just as dirty

You sometimes have to rummage for them.
Op maybe email your supermarkets customer service email and put a request in. If they think they'll lose you as a customer they should order some- and if its an issue for you it will be to other customers.
