Standing in trolley

Wordsareimportant · 08/09/2024 23:11

after a debate with another parent this week, it got me thinking. AIBU to put my child ‘in’ the trolley?

I have a nearly 1 year old and a 2.5 year old. There is only one supermarket close to us that has trolleys with two seats.

If we have to go anywhere else I will put my youngest child in the seat and my 2 year old will walk. However, there are times when putting her in the trolley behind my other child is just 1000x easier than dragging her around the shop.

Discussion with another parent made me wonder if I really am ‘disgusting and spreading germs’ for letting her sit in there.

For context:

  • on the odd occasion this happens, she always sits, doesn’t stand.
  • I can’t ‘just go shopping without them’
  • Yes, she can walk. but she’s 2.5 years old. She likes to touch everything, ‘explore’ the shop and just be an average 2 year old.

so, AIBU? Or am I just an average parent trying to food shop with toddlers?

I got told off 10 years ago when I did exactly this with my now teens.

It a fair case from the staff- outdoor shoes on the bottom of other peoples grocery trolleys.

It’s pretty unlikely foxes and other wildlife climb up into a trolley and wee on it.

I was annoyed at the time because shopping with a toddler and a newborn was already hard enough…

I now am weekly thankful for online delivery.

My mum was a nurse and told me some really horrible stories of children standing up and reaching for things and falling g out of the trolley when the parents weren't looking.

A lot of head injuries and in one case the little boy ended up passing away.

I personally wouldn't put my child in a trolley unless strapped into the dedicated seat

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/09/2024 23:31

I don’t care what may or not happen to trolleys overnight, having shoes on the trolley with their traces of shit etc is gross. End of.

and yeah most food is packaged but… you touch the packaging and then touch the food so any germs on the outside can easily transfer to the inside I.e. what you consume. Unless you wash your shopping when you bring it home but most people don’t do that post covid- pandemic.

Wordsareimportant · 08/09/2024 23:35

Another thing pointed out by another poster as well…
what about the trolley handle?
how disgusting must that be? Think of all the people that have touched that without washing their hands first 🤮

then you touch every single thing you put in your trolley.
you might even have a sneaky snack after your trip to the shop… putting those lovely clean hands right on your food and into your mouth.

😂😂

I had a toddler and twins so regularly had one sat in the trolley. Never once did I get any negative comments but lots of cooing. Mnetters seem to think that without dc in trolleys, they would be totally hygienic, which I find a weird thought. If they’re that worried, they can scan as they go and put items straight into their bags.

dc standing in a trolley is a no for safety reasons.

Tell me you’re not a mum of multiples without telling me you’re not a mum of multiples 😂 There’s loads of things I didn’t think I’d do until I had twins. You enjoy polishing your halo while looking down on others.

Galoop · 08/09/2024 23:39

It's disgusting, I'd judge you hard. Other people can manage, so why can't you. There's literally signs in the supermarket to say not to do it. Shop online if you must.

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 08/09/2024 23:39

I don't care about the hygiene aspect but it's really unsafe, I saw a toddler tip a trolley from inside it & the sound of the crack she gave her head has stayed with me.

A sling/wrap is really handy for that age, I always popped mine on my back so they could see everything & chat.

angelikacpickles · 08/09/2024 23:40

Wouldn't bother me.

Might I also add..
whislt most of these trolleys have seats, the vast majority don’t have seat belts.

my 2 year old in the trolley is probably much less likely to get injured than my fidgety baby with no seat belt around him

So do I never leave the house? As much as online shopping is convenient, you can’t get everything you need online.

I left the house all the time, to go to the park or the bank or post office, the laundrette for example. Everything had to be done with a baby and a 2 year old in tow, the supermarket was the most exhausting and challenging. Everything took ages and involved lots of queueing.

NoahsTortoise · 08/09/2024 23:42

I wouldn't think anything of this, I guess I don't think of trolleys as particularly clean? Are they ever cleaned?
Food is generally all packaged and if it's not it's because it's in skin that's not eaten. Wouldn't bother me at all to see a toddled standing in there.

I’m sure you knew what I meant. I obviously leave the house for other things.

You can’t, however, shop for everything online

I can't get worked up about the perceived 'dirt' or 'germs'.
The food I put in the trolley is wrapped - or loose fruit (such as bananas) I don't eat the peel.

But I wince whenever I see a toddler in a trolley because it is just so dangerous.

Please don't do it.

Shop where they have trollies for two.
or
Shop on-line
or
shop in the evening when your dp is home
or
put the little one in a carrier.

All MUCH safer options.

JoanCollected · 08/09/2024 23:46

Germs😂

I bet at least some of you give bj's.

Summertimer · 08/09/2024 23:47

Trolleys are often stored outside in the rain etc. so I don’t think of them as sanitised food bearing vessels

You sound so entitled tbh, if there are signs to say not to do it why do you think you're the exception? And now you're playing the faux poor me victim card. So typical 🙄

Borninabarn32 · 08/09/2024 23:20

I'm surprised people think the trolleys are clean or the food in the shop. It's well known you should wash cans before opening them because of mouse piss. Imagine what all those hands that have touched the trolley handle have been doing all day. A 2 year old can't be expected to walk round a supermarket, I wouldn't take a second glance at a kid in a trolley tbh.

Good Vibes Love GIF by Rastamouse

I saw some cardboard boxes on the shelves {Peanut butter jars I think they were} completely shredded by mice.
I did call the staff {Pre Covid era} and they removed the stuff.

But rat bait stations are put around supermarkets if you look carefully even the so called ''Middle class'' ones. {Not going to name them obviously!} -

You're triggering my post/retail anxiety 😂

As a first aider I dealt with multiple injuries caused by kids in trollies like this. The parents always liked to kick off as well because we'd made them unsafe despite pointing out the obvious instruction on the trolley NOT to do it. I think we actually may have had a legal complaint in once...

Hahaha I think you’re getting a little bit away with your own emotions.

You seem to be exceptionally triggered by a post about trolleys.

might be time for you to go to bed

Teamustbefromateapot · 08/09/2024 23:51

This is totally normal in my local supermarket! My 3 year old gets tired halfway round and the one year old decides to be done with the seat shortly after. I'm never the only parent with toddlers in the main trolley!

I was posting to see what other people did. I was sure I wasn’t the only mum to do it but the conversation I had with this other parent made me wonder if it was like the crime of the century 😂

Oh goodness! Can’t believe some parents would blame the shops for an accident like this!
